Gregg Shorthand

I bought it for nostalgic reasons. I once knew Gregg shorthand and still used some of the phrases (words) in taking notes at meetings and in personal letters or cards (to my sister who also knew shorthand.) It is amazing how much I remembered and keep looking at it to pick up more and more words I should and can be using.

Great refresher!

I took short hand when I was in high school and don't remember a lot of it. As a personal project I wanted to renew my short hand skills. The book is self-explanatory, and moves fairly quickly. At times, it moves too quickly in teaching symbols for sounds. However, you do go at your own pace which makes it easier.

If you're new to short hand, you might struggle a bit more than if you've had experience with it.

Susan Wittig Albert grew up on a farm in Illinois and earned her Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley. Cute historical cozy - if you don't mind talking animals

"The Tale of Castle Cottage" is a fictional story based on true events in the life of children's author Beatrix Potter. Beatrix is in the process of renovating Castle Cottage where she and her fianc� Will Heelis will live after they are married, if Beatrix's parents ever give the couple their blessing. Even if that occurs, they may not have a place to live since the renovations are taking an extraordinary amount of time, possibly due to thievery on the part of the contractor. Does the crooked contractor have anything to due with other thefts, ranging from a tin of tea to a rare book, that are going on in the village? As Beatrix decides to get to the bottom of the thefts and the construction delays, someone else undertakes a separate investigation into the thefts - Crumpet, a gray tabby cat.

"The Tale of Castle Cottage" is an unusual book. It is part historical fiction and part fictionalized biography. In addition, to tie into the real Beatrix Potter's animal stories for children, the animals in the story talk to each other about all the events occurring in the village. While this is the first book I have read in this series, I've enjoyed several other books by this author. This book is written in Ms. Albert's usual excellent style, and the portions covering the historical background of the author and the village are wonderful. I am okay with Beatrix's pets occasionally commenting on the discussions going on between Beatrix and her friends to add a bit of charm to the book. However, later when entire chapters are devoted to the lives of the animals and parties they are planning, I began to lose interest. I am an animal lover and am able to suspend belief when reading a fictional story; I have enjoyed several cozies featuring crime-solving and magical cats and dogs. However, it is distracting for me to be immersed in life in a 1913 English village, and then switch to animals discussing their picnic plans or concerns about a gang of criminal rats.

While there are many imaginative scenes with the animals, the author's descriptions of the current state of Beatrix's homes Hill Top Farm and Castle Cottage remind the reader that Beatrix and Will are real people and that many of the places in the book are also real. These excellent scenes make you want to hop on a plane and visit the quaint village of Sawrey. I love the author's historical notes at the end of the story, which give context to the book and help clarify which parts of the story are fictional and which really happened. The recipes for some of the dishes mentioned in the story that were popular during the era in which the book is set are another nice touch.

Susan Wittig Albert is a wonderful author, and I appreciate the research she has done to make the historical details of the book so accurate. Much of the book is entertaining, but while it is a cute mystery and romantic love story of Beatrix Potter and Will Heelis, the whimsy of the talking animals is too fanciful for me. However, if you don't mind a bit of Rita Mae and Sneaky Pie Brown mixed in with your historical fiction, then you may find this book to your liking. It just isn't my cup of tea.

great historical cozy

In the summer of1913, Beatrix Potter is currently residing at Hill Top Farm in the Lake District while working on her latest story The Tale of Pigling Bland. She admits to her publisher that her eight drawings are not that good as Beatrix still recovers from her recent illness in which she lived with her parents at their domicile in Kensington. As she works on her latest novel, Beatrix also oversees the renovation of her new home that she and her fianc� solicitor William Heelis will move into once Mr. Biddle finishes the Castle Cottage improvements and they are married (in spite of the doubts of her parents).

While the author struggles with her new work, the locals of nearby Near Sawrey begin to misplace items ranging in value from baked goods to money to family heirlooms. Her friend Sarah Barwick believes she is the victim of a thief, but fears it is someone she knows. However that pales in comparison to the death of carpenter Lewis Adcock who was just fired by Biddle. Beatrix and Will end up investigating the thefts, the death and Biddle's lack of commitment to the castle Cottage renovation.

The eighth Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter (see The Tale of Oat Cake Crag) is a great historical cozy that brings to life the Lake District just prior to WWI. The story line is a wonderful entertaining tale as once again Susan Wittig Albert combines Ms. Potter's real life, the fables of the animals who dominate her tales and an enjoyable amateur sleuth into a delightful story.

Is eight really enough?

What a joy! What a true literary joy it is to return to the Land between the Lakes, to visit the Victorian-Age households owned by children's author Beatrix Potter, and to eavesdrop on the everyday conversations of the people and the animals of the area. The books in this Cottage Tales series always offer a welcome respite from the complex cares of 21st-century life.

This episode has multiple plotlines to follow. The year is 1913, and Miss Potter has arranged for some construction to be done on her second major property, the Castle Farm. The job seems to cost more and to take longer than she ever anticipated, however. She's got to look into that matter, and perhaps request the aid of her fianc�, Will Heelis, in remedying the situation. (Speaking of Will: will the couple EVER get married? Or will family disdain and interference get the better of both of them?) In the meantime, the community appears to be on the edge of a full-fledged invasion by some nasty rats. It may be up to the neighborhood animals to deal with these rodent-thieves, who are robbing the humans of both trinkets and edibles. Add to these problems the sudden death of a good man, and all of the inhabitants must stop to consider the reasons and the ramifications of the act. It is indeed a busy time in this otherwise bucolic English landscape.

This historical fiction/cozy mystery distinguishes itself by being based on the story of a real-life author, told in the style that she herself used while writing her own Peter Rabbit tales. The text is replete with marvelous humor and delightful turns of phrase. (Example from page 99: "[Dimity] had ended up in the arms of Christopher Kittredge -- well, one arm, since the fellow, a war hero, had left the other with the Boers.") Yes, there are talking animals (and if you can't handle those italicized asides, then you'd best not pick up any volume in this series). There's also a personal narrator, who at times feels free to politely intrude and to interrupt the action to approach the reader directly and to offer inside observations. You might have to "suspend your disbelief" a bit; but when you do, all of these elements add up to much merry reading.

This time the additional explanatory material supplied by the author at the book's conclusion very neatly ties every loose end and supplies a worthy wrap-up of Beatrix's biography. Can we handle the fact that this eighth installment is the LAST ONE in the run? Susan Wittig Albert's writing continues with several other mystery series, so she obviously has other non-Beatrix Potter tales to tell. I certainly wish her well in all of her endeavors. But I can't help feeling a small sense of loss that we'll have no more new adventures from Bea, Will, Rascal, Crumpet, Bosworth, Hyacinth, and all of the rest. And what, no more Badger Rules of Thumb?!? Bye-bye, Near and Far Sawrey. Our time together has indeed been both fun and educational.

This vivid, detailed historical novel chronicles the relationship between Virginia colonists and the Powhatans as seen through the perspectives of Captain John Smith and 11-year-old Pocahontas, daughter of the Powhatan chief. As in Sacajawea (2002), Bruchac successfully uses alternating chapters in which different characters--in this case, Pocahontas and Smith--describe the same situations. This technique enables readers to see the distinctly divergent worldviews. Smith's perspectives are prefaced with excerpts from the captain's own writings or from other sources of the period. Heading Pocahontas' accounts are stories told in the tradition of the Powhatans' Algonquin-rooted culture. In an afterword, Bruchac explains what eventually became of his narrators. The author goes to great lengths to present a historically accurate depiction (which may account for the nonfiction cataloging, 975.5), and he succeeds admirably, exposing the many myths and misconceptions made popular by Disney and others. True story of Pocahontas

I really enjoyed this book and it has inspired me to do more research on the early days of Virginia. I liked the alternating tales of the eleven year old Pocahontas, and the woeful John Smith, who was somewhat of an egomaniac if one is to believe the author, who took the story from Smith's own diaries.

It, of course, dispells all the romantic fantasies of Pocahontas saving Smith's life. In fact, she married John Rolfe, not Smith.

For all his complaining about being mistreated for his lack of family connections, John Smith probably was the hero he portrays himself to be. Otherwise it seems Jamestown would have failed miserably.

I really enjoyed this book, particularly the way it gives you both Pocohontas' and Smith's point of view, and I thought it was really fair and insightful about both sides. The only thing about the Smith chapters I didn't like was that, in the beginning, they went off on so many tangents it was confusing. While that may have been true to character, it made it harder to read. Last, I wish the book were longer! I would have liked to read on about what happened to Pocahontas after Smith left.

I do not recommend this for 12 yr old. Hard to read, to say the least. Written from John Smith's point of view. This book tells the story as if John Smith were talking in the 1600's, which makes it very hard to relate to and to understand.

An Outstanding Supply Chain Book-Must Read

I highly recommend this book to consultants, senior managers, c-executives, and academic folks who want to improve their knowledge about strategy. Although some of the tools described in the book are common sense, some of the techniques presented are very sophisticated. The book covers everything: small companies, big corporations, different industries (e.g. food, construction, chemical), acquiring business intelligence, change management tools, purchasing frameworks, etc.

The book also gives great practical examples on how to apply Strategic Sourcing. The first business case shows how these tools were applied to the distribution area of a cement company (it could be any company). It is easy to see how powerful these tools are.

Small Book with Great Content

It is hard to track all the emerging trends in the current supply environment. This book is an excellent reference and will definitely put you up to speed! Very detailed, but also easy to read.
The book is divided into 3 parts. The first introduces Strategic Sourcing and its importance talking about achievements of several organizations, and the different stages in Strategic Sourcing. Here, the author also gives some of the best practices followed by the leading companies.
In the second part of the book, the author presents the roadmap for the implementation of Strategic Sourcing. Although the tools are not new for most of the purchasing folks, they are nicely put together to explain how the implementation process works.
Finally, in the third part of the book we find 3 business cases describing different Strategic Sourcing solutions and issues found in Distribution, Capital Expenditures, and New Product Development respectively. Each of the cases put emphasis in one specific aspect of the implementation. In addition, they are very short cases, which make it easier for the reader to follow and understand the key points.
The second edition of the book also brings a bonus chapter with the frequently asked questions in this field. Questions like "What Strategic Sourcing professionals do during a market crash?" are addressed in a simple an honest way.
In summary, this is a small book with great content.

The book contains a lot of valuable information, but they needed to invest in a decent proofreading service. The mistakes effect the readability a little bit, but you can still get the main idea.

This book is a bad ripoff of the Wicked Witches of the Midwest Series by Amanda M. Lee. Even though the characters are a carbon copy of the originals, the main difference is this book isn't as well written and doesn't contain the humor or snark that the original. It's disappointing that an author has to ripoff another author instead of coming up with original characters.

Practical and straight forward.

Left an area with Anytime Fitness to one without. Desperate I had to do something. This book was discovered before the sojourn; thankfully, and will be my go-to toward affordable fitness.

Only wish the title included women. Really muscle is muscle and I could not afford to be stuck on stupid regarding nomenclature.

The book is a godsend as far as I am concerned. Straight forward, in chaser like I need and prefer. Buy it! You won't regret it.

My Workout Bible

I've had this book for about 8 years now and I still use it to this day. It provides a full list of exercises for every level of fitness as well as for every level of equipment available to you. Anything from body weight routines to full on power lifting. Every exercise is clearly described as well as pictured. This is truly my home workout bible.

The title is a little mis leading

Basically this book shows you how to put a gym in your home. Its good if that is what your goal is and is very informative on how to do just that, but from the title I thought it would include more calisthenic exercises. That's why I say the title is miss leading because the point of the book is to build a gym in your home so that should be the title. There is a book that does focus on exercises without any kind of gym written by Mark Lauren and his book is what I thought this one would be judging by the title. As the the old saying goes "never judge a book..."

About the Author
GERALD VAN BELLE is a professor in the Departments of Biostatistics and Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington. He is the author of four books as well as more than 100 articles and numerous book chapters.

LLOYD D. FISHER is Professor Emeritus in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington, Seattle, and a consultant to the drug and device industries. He has held positions with the Center for AIDS Research, the Mayo Clinic, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, among others.

PATRICK J. HEAGERTY is an associate professor in the Department of Biostatistics at the University of Washington in Seattle and an associate member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Great Book

This is a great basic text for biostats and great for the price. There are some mistakes here and there that the professor has pointed out, but they are very minor.

well written text in biostatistics

The authors write well and cover most of the important topics very thoroughly. They motivate the subject very well with a number of important and "real world" examples in the first chapter.
A unique feature is its detailed coverage of sample size determination in a number of contexts.

The book was published in 1993 which is not recent enough to cover advances in meta analysis, resampling, Bayesian Hierarchical Models (with Markov Chain Monte Carlo Methods) and frailty models. At least bootstrap methods and meta analyses are mentioned in the book.

Noteworthy are the full chapters on multiple comparison problems and discriminant analysis. This is an excellent reference book for biostatisticians.

This review was based on the first edition of the text. Since it is now listed under the second edition and amazon does not let reviewers review the same title twice I am adding my review of the second edition that I recently purchased and read through.

The second edition is as good if not better than the first. The only disadvantage is the high price and availability currently only in hard cover whereas the fist edition was in paperback. The book is still elementary and covers the basics but it is expanded over the first edition, includes two new authors and some new chapters. As the first edition came out around 1993 and this one was published in 2004 there have been significant additions to the literature on biostatistics and the authors have carefully updated the reference sections. The two new and very important chapters cover randomized clinical trials and logitudinal data anlaysis. These are both extremely important topics for the pharmaceutical and medical device industries. Advances in statistical computing, robust statistics, model building and discriminant analysis are all covered in this text. Much of the great aspects of the first edition were preserved and the excellent writing style of van Belle and Fisher remains in this edition.

Great reference text

This text is a great reference for everything from basic analysis to more advanced topics like longitudinal and time-to-event data. The book is well-written with relevant, current examples. If I had to choose one reference book, this would be it because of its depth and breadth of content (at the intermediate level).
