About the Author
Kevin Dunn is the Elliott Professor of Chemistry at Hampden-Sydney College, where he teaches the course which inspired this book. He holds a BS degree from the University of Chicago and a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin. He appears on The Learning Channel's "Mysteries of Magic" and is co-author of a dozen journal articles in theoretical chemistry. He lives in central Virginia with his wife and several cats.

Chemistry from Scratch

Idiosyncratic and irreverent, Caveman Chemistry is like no other chemistry textbook that I know of. It is authored not only by Kevin Dunn but also four figments of his imagination who have leapt from mind to mind down through history and do their best to make the leap out of the book and into yours. You learn the history of chemical technology through a series of hands-on projects that demand that you get your hands dirty making things from scratch: fire, paper, glass, soap, batteries, photographs, polyester, and others. The book does not shy away from potentially dangerous projects like making gunpowder, alcohol, and chlorine gas, trusting that readers are capable of all due caution.

The book gave me a greater appreciation for the sources for the products that I use on a daily basis. Rather than being conjured out of thin air, the stuff in my life has its origin in the natural world. Now to get my hands dirty...

Terrific.

I'm using this book in a college chemistry class for nonscience majors. Dunn's writing is a bit eccentric, no doubt, but the projects are great and my students are engaged as never before, so--I win!

Science books that are intended to be marketed both as trade books and as textbooks generally fail at both. Often the two goals are just incompatible. Dunn has achieved something special here: he has done a nice job of resolving the conflicts between these two goals. The text is rigorous enough to be used in a general-college class, yet accessible to any interested person looking for a nifty science project (or a handbook for surviving the collapse of civilization!)...and as a bonus, it's a great read. In addition he maintains an extremely helpful website for the book; I have learned almost as much about the projects from reading the comments of his students as from reading the book, and having a central place for errata to be posted online is very convenient for my students.

I'd love to see a character in the next Mad-Max-style post-apocalypse movie pull out a copy of Caveman Chemistry and start a fire with two sticks, or make soap starting with ashes. But even if civilization survives, I will take consolation in this: with the projects in this book, we can participate in a tradition of human technology going back 500,000 years.

Nice quality paper

I was very happy with the quality of the reprint John Wayne comics #1-3. The paper used for each of the inside pages is much thicker than I anticipated. The outside jacket is a bit plain- but that's not really the point of buying a reprint of the comic, is it?

The boundary line

The British adventure in India and Pakistan was a long and strange one. It began the way a man might commence his descent down a winter hillside when he loses his footing. The ending came with Mahatma Ghandi and Indian independence after WWII. The Sepoy Mutiny came as a point delineating two facets of that experience. Prior to the mutiny John Company (The East India Company) enjoyed a symbiotic relationship with the British Army. The mutiny dramatised the serious need to make some major changes in the administration. Queen Victoria took control of India as ruler. Thus began the Raj.
This fine work follows the Raj from beginning until the end. The British administration of the Far East didn't get a lot easier when John Company lost power. The saga is a long one and a necessary one for the historian who simply loves historic enigma. Creation of the Raj shares a similarity to the US from Reconstruction onward in an obscure way. I recommend this book for the reader who enjoys the futile attempt to understand the threads of the human experience.

Long Live the old Raj!

This is an elegant and informative book on the old Indian army and the Raj in India. Like the author's previous works on the British Victorian army of the period and its social and military characteristics this book covers some of the same ground, but expands greatly on the history of the Raj's army.
Spanning the post Mutiny years from 1857 until the choatic formation of India in 1947, the author presents many fascinating details about army life in India. What becomes apparent is how overall beneficial the British Raj was to India's social development and growth. A hopeless patch-work of petty Mogul Princes and backward religions before the establishment of the Raj in the 18th century, the British were able to transform this mass into something resembling a wokable nation. What is apparent also is that despite their arrogance, British officers really made the Indian army work. Without them the Seapoy was never really as effective.
The Indian army was basically intended for service within the Empire. When employed in conventional warfare outside of India in the First and Second World Wars its performance often varied. Requiring specialized foods as well as officers who could speak the myraid languages, sustained heavy casualties limited its use. The sections of the book about the so-called martial races of India is interesting. After the Mutiny the British preferred to employ Northern Indians who were mostly moslem, as opposed to the Hindu's in the South of Madras and Bombay who were deemed untrustworthy and too smart by half for soldiering! The Rasjputs, Pathans and Sikhs would all become the martial races upon which the British drew for manpower in India. The Sikhs in particualr, with their bizarre religion, have much to thank the British for. Without them it is doubtful that they would have survived as a religion in India. They flourished as merchants, urban dwellers and soldiers, the latter always considered an honorable profession for the warlike Sikhs. We might have fewer taxi cab drivers today if the British had not sustained their existence.
The last part of the book talks about the nightmare of Independence in India where Ghandi, Jinneh and Nehru were totally uncaring of the amount of trouble they caused as the British tried to dis-engage from the sub-continent without a religeous blood-bath. ... This book helps us to see a more accurate view of [Ghandi] and and his followers. ... I urge people from both of those countries [India and Pakistan] to read this book and learn about their past as part of the Raj, which helped to make them what they are today. All in all, a most excellent and revealing book on the subject.

A popular account, very Anglo-Centric and very disapponting

Having read Farwell's previous work "Queen Victoria's Little Wars", which I quite liked, I was expecting to like this book as well. Unfortunately, "Armies of the Raj" is an ill-researched throwback. It parrots tired old imperialist "truisms" about India, the "martial" races, and the Indianization of the Indian Army's officer Corps, and presents the British presence in India as the greatest thing since sliced bread. A much better book is David Omissi's "THE SEPOY AND THE RAJ: THE INDIAN ARMY, 1860-1940". Farwell writes well; if only his content had been as good as his style.

Hook for the Series Now

This book pulls you in right from the beginning. Yes it is the second book in the series. Which most people will then say it picks up so fast because its for the fans. However, these books at least the this one and the first are or could be read as 2 separated stories. That can be a really nice thing for those who want to get in to the series but only have a chance to read them out of order.

The chapters in the book are not to long at all. Being a faster reader you could finish this book quite fast. Others may take a bit more time, however it should still not take much more time then other readers. I also have not come across any hard vocabulary words that would stop someone from reading or enjoying the story line.

However, this is a book about a young girl in her 20s and her struggle with not only her fresh, new relationship with a young boy also in his 20s but who does not believe in the paranormal and her secret paranormal ability. So you can see a conflict there. But when they decide to take a week long trip out of the city (where it is much easier to block out the voices) to get some work done for their classes. She is met with a choice to except her roll and power and help those souls that are trapped and their love ones to move on or to keep it all hidden so her boyfriend does not think she is crazed or worse leave her forever.

Personally, I love stories like this. I enjoy the paranormal very much, I even watch much of it on TV. But there is something about reading it that takes me deeper in to it. Yes, it is a bit cliche' with the internal battle of excepting the power and letting the world know or hiding it forever to just seem normal and live a normal life, what ever that may mean.

Ghosts in The Park!

The second in Calloway's Southern Ghosts series, Ticket To Die takes place in an abandoned amusement park located in the fictional town of Abandon, Alabama. Everything about this town, from the park called Zephyr Land to the Abandon Inn, which is really just an old house, seems haunted.
Well ok, more than just "seems", but only certain "gifted" individuals really know this.
One of these folks is Amanda, a connoisseur of carousels, who has accompanied her boyfriend Jake to study the older ones there. She is then to write a research paper on how this carousel could be improved that she hopes will get her an apprenticeship.
Meanwhile Jake, a rising engineer, hopes to study the construction of the roller coasters.
Only they both quickly discover that something has gone horribly wrong, probably intentionally, that led to several deaths. The voices from beyond spend most of the remaining story trying to convince Amanda to help them get justice, while Amanda tries to convince Jake that she is not insane.
First, the degree to which the coasters and carousel are described is amazing. I'll definitely never look at coasters quite the same again. And I hope people always build with the highest quality parts.
Also, this story features a colorful cast of characters, from the old woman who runs the hotel, and her husband who fancies himself reenacting the role of Confederate general, to a heartbreakingly cute set of twin 5-year-old girls. One of the central characters debuted in the first book of this series, and while it isn't strictly necessary to have read that, some of his references will make more sense if you have done.
Overall, this was a compelling read. I always find it interesting to examine the inner workings of Southern culture and the many and varied people who reside therein. So do not be alarmed by the vandalized sign, "die?" "ride?" same difference. Go ahead and get in line! And enjoy this bit of summer time.

Chris White lives in San Diego, Calif., USA, where he serves as President and CEO of White Labs Inc. Chris founded White Labs in 1995 to manufacture yeast cultures and provide fermentation services to the brewing, wine, and distilling industries. Chris has a Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of California, San Diego and a B.S. in Biochemistry from the University of California, Davis. Jamil Zainasheff started brewing in 1999 and soon started winning awards in homebrew competitions. Written for homebrewers

After reading the other reviews I was a little unsure if purchasing this book would apply to homebrewers. After reading this book extensively I believe that this is an excellent starting point for homebrewers who want to learn how to culture and store their own yeast. The other reviews are correct, there are a few basic introduction chapters in the beginning but the vast majority of the book is an extensive guide on yeast culturing practices from start to finish. The author(s) do an excellent job explaining concepts and procedures in a clear way giving the reader a step-by-step guide, with some photographs.

The authors give examples of how commercial breweries grow up their yeast to pitchable rates, but the vast majority of this book is written for homebrewers who are working in 5 and 10 gallon batches. Everything is covered in detail, from washing and rinsing yeast harvested from a primary fermentation vessel, pitching rates, yeast starters, harvesting yeast, storing yeast, preparing slants and petri dishes and streak plating yeast cells to grow and isolate different colonies. For those homebrewers who think that yeast culturing is way too much of a headache and prefer to purchase a new vial of yeast from the store for every batch, please give this book a chance and see how easy it is to culture and isolate your own yeast. The author(s) do an excellent job of describing how complex a brewery laboratory can be, but they do an even better job of teaching the homebrewer to use the exact same techniques at home using nothing more than a pressure cooker, agar, dry malt extract and a wire inoculation loop.

If you are a homebrewer who is just starting out and are using extract and partial mash recipes then perhaps yeast culturing is too large of a next step. However, for all-grain brewers who are looking to take their recipes to the next level and begin culturing their own strains and producing strains that are unique to their recipes then this book will be an excellent starting point. The author(s) teach the reader how to streak yeast onto a petri dish and isolate individual colonies as well as how to select the healthiest colonies as well as how to step up these colonies to a pitchable size for a 5 gallon fermentation.

All of the other reviews for this book are fairly accurate and each has their own degree of truth, but by all means to not let the negative reviews for this book sway your decision. It does not matter if you are a homebrewer or a full size commercial brewery, if you have considered culturing your own yeast to save money or to create new and unique yeast strains, please give this book a chance.

Excellent Reference to "Cold Side" of Homebrewing

I was put off by some of the early reviewers of this book, who didn't find it as useful as they had hoped. And, perhaps partly because they had lowered my expectations--but mostly because of what I read in this book--I am overjoyed with what I found.

This book divides brewing into two parts: the brew day, which it calls the "hot side" (which it does not really cover), and what happens after you boil your wort, which it calls the "cold side." This is what the book focuses on. It's about yeast, sure: what they are, how they work, what happens to them under various conditions. But it's really about fermentation, this cold side: the way we control those various conditions to get yeast to do something we want them to do: make great beer.

And in its focus, White and Zainasheff hammer home the need for repeatability--same amount of yeast, same temperature, etc.

I think they are on to something. And if you suspect that your beer could stand some time and attention spent on this cold side of brewing, there is a wealth of knowledge here. For example, if you had to brew all your beers with just one yeast, what would it be? Two? Three? etc. How many yeast varieties should you try to maintain (based on how often you brew)?

This book treats the reader seriously. That means whether you are doing 5 gallons at a time with malt extract or running a microbrewery, the assumption is you want to make the best beer possible--and that fermentation control is key. I did have to smile at the chapter title "Your Own Yeast Lab Made Easy." And yet, for all the high-tech possibilities mentioned that might make your head spin and your wallet empty, there were many simple, free approaches to controlling and measuring your beer. And I think that chapter title captures the spirit of the book--first, to encourage you to think more scientifically about your beer (by which I mean "systemically," where you brew with intention)--which can be a bit off-putting if you think of yourself as a free spirit, creative type; second, that it is as "easy" as you want it to be. Take notes. Sniff. Taste. Do it again.

Do you need this book to brew award-winning beer? No. You just need a way to put the right amount of yeast in your wort and hold it at the right temperature(s) for the duration of fermentation--every time. If you are convinced, put this money toward a few flasks and a stir plate, a temperature controller, a fermentation chamber, and a way to heat or cool your beer as it ferments--and hold it to within 1 degree F of your target. But if you aren't convinced, this book might give you the information and knowledge, and allow you to benefit from the experience of these gentlemen.

If you really want to understand brewing

The information in this book is invaluable, whether you are just starting out as a home brewer, or have years of experience. After brewing for almost 7 years - mostly reading articles from popular brew magazines, collecting information from online forums, watching youtube videos, I would greatly urge you to pick up a copy of this book. Whether it provides too much information or not, is up to you to determine, but even if the knowledge goes on unused, I'd imagine everyone would love to have an idea of what really goes on in brewing chemistry. I would strongly recommend all the books in this series for anyone who is serious about brewing beer. The book was particularly enjoyable to me because of the mix of science (biological and chemistry) with real scenarios, while still written in a language that anyone can comprehend.

Not a bad book - but it is very one-sided should not be the only baby care book that you read.

I am about halfway through this tome on baby rearing. I've read the infant-specific sections but have skipped over many of the toddler sections for now. After digesting all that I have read so far, I have some mixed feelings about the book. The more I read, the more I realize that this is really just one man's very strong opinion on how to raise an infant seemingly based on his experience watching his wife raise their 8 children (his book focuses 90% of the time of the mother's role). He is also a pediatrician to his credit - though he states that you should never ask pediatricians parenting advice, that's not what they are trained in in medical school. While he claims that all his assertions have been researched, most are stated as a personal opinion.

My biggest complaint with the book, is many of practices he advocates seem like they would be very hard to follow for anyone who doesn't have a flexible work schedule in which they were able to spend significant amounts of time with their child during the day and night. I've posted some of the themes that will be repeated and restated throughout this book time and time again. Consider how realistic it will be for you to follow these themes before purchasing this book. As other reviewers have stated, I could see someone feeling a great deal of guilt and failure as a parent if this was the only baby book you read and tried to follow.

Consider this book if:
1) You are the child's birth mom. The book offers very little advice for dads and almost all the advice involves "supporting your wife" by stepping in to give her a break while she does the bulk of the care. See point 2 for adoptive moms.
2) You are planning on breastfeeding - and I don't mean, pumping. Bottles are tolerated in this book (eventually) but not in any way shape or form embraced. If you are an adoptive mom there is a section for you on how to breastfeed. However, it takes 1 month of advance preparation and then can take several times of day of pretend breastfeeding for 4 months to finally produce a minimal supply of breast milk (not enough to actually provide the baby with adequate nutrition). That is, if it works at all. There are also options of jerry-rigging dad to "breastfeed" if mom is not around.
3) You have the means to make the baby your priority 24/7 for a significant period of time. If you can't afford to stay at home with the baby or are the kind of person who WANTS to go back to work after having a baby your first recommendation will you to find a job in which you can take the baby to work with you. More specifically, the advice is to *wear* the baby at work with you in a sling. Keeping an infant in a sling is Sears' advice to pretty much everything. Clean houses for a living? Great, wear the baby in a sling to work and carry on! Your employer will admire your dedication. Your job won't let you wear your baby to work? Maybe try to find a different one. Get invited to a black tie affair? Bring the three-month-old along in a sling, everyone in the room with be impressed with your mad baby-wearing skills. Have a speech to deliver for 150 professionals or getting interviewed on television? No problem, stick that little sucker in its sling and carry on. If the baby starts to fuss, you can easily breastfeed from the sling while on TV. The black tie affair, speech and TV interviews actual examples from the book of things the doctor's wife has done over the years.
4) Following point 3 - babywearing in a sling is a must for you during your waking hours. Not just you actually. If you have a child care provider, you should insist that they also wear the baby for *at least* 3 hours out of the day.
5) Cosleeping in your bed is a must for you. Chapter after chapter talks about sharing a bed with your infant. There is very little discussion of other options except in one small section of the book. Eventually, Sears will tell you not to feel guilty if you can't cosleep but after reading chapter after chapter where the only option he talks about is cosleeping, it's too little too late.
6) You have expendable income. A few more bits of practical advice from the book: Your birthing experience will be so much better if you hire a doula or midwife. Getting a housekeeper will give you more time to worry about the baby and not the dirty toilet. Not working will allow you to breastfeed on demand for at least the first two years of your child's life (although you might want to consider taking 3 years off in case your child isn't fully ready to wean until age three).

As you can see this book offers one very specific and very intensive parenting style. It's not so much that I disagree with the bulk of the ideas - I do plan to breastfeed, have a sling ready to go for baby wearing and I'm lucky to be able to take an extended time off work to spend with the baby - it's just that so many of these points are belabored over and over and over again section while alternatives are lumped together and given lip service in one chapter. I am glad that I have this book as a reference but I would not want it to be my only reference. I think most parents would benefit from having another, more objective and comprehensive baby book to complement this one, especially if someone other than the breastfeeding mom wants something to read. Someone gave my husband the Baby Owner's Manual which he has found straightforward and useful. I've also ordered the Mayo Clinic: Guide to Your Baby's First Year as I liked their pregnancy guide and have heard that book is similar.

Full disclosure, I'm about to be a first time mom, so I haven't put any of these child-rearing theories to the test. I'm just trying to learn as much as possible before the baby comes so I can find a strategy that works best for me. This book certainly offers up one such strategy and I do not regret having read it; however, I would not consider it a stand-alone resource. I do feel like it is priced very reasonably considering its heft and has enough useful sections that it has a place in my library.

Skewed to upper-middle class families; might make you go crazy

This book is great for a lot of things, a lot of the time - good info on nursing, infant feeding, (most) illnesses, caring for minor illnesses, and especially child development and milestones. For those things, it's a great parenting bible. I give it 3 stars, though, because it's caused me about as much unnecessary heartache and guilt as it has reassured and informed me. Here's where the book and I have issues:

*The parenting style it encourages - while I really like it generally - is at odds with modern life. It's not the book's fault, but the book doesn't do enough to acknowledge that this style of parenting, in this day and age, is seriously. hard. work., and possible to implement fully only if you have lots and lots of support.
*The book is skewed toward upper-middle class families. The section on Mom returning to work more or less poo-poos any reason you might think you have for returning to work and strongly suggests you're making the wrong "choice" if you go back to work. It only begrudgingly acknowledges that many of us live in two-incomes-are-necessary households. It does not acknowledge that Mom might have other very good reasons besides economics for wanting to return to work.
*The book claims to encourage Dad's involvement, but it's mostly pitched as a "break" for Mom. We're not talking about full-on shared-parenting here.
*The book makes light of the catastrophic toll that long-term sleep deprivation and frequent sleep interruptions take on parents' mind and body. It downplays the needs of parents in the sections about baby sleep, suggesting that you should be just fine with getting woken up frequently throughout the first two years of life, because don't you see your baby needs you?? Plus, you can nap when baby naps, right? Because you're not doing anything else with your life, of course. I'm less than a year into my parenting adventure, and I'm about dead because I thought I needed to be a sleep martyr. I'm not a cry-it-out proponent, but I do think parents need to know that it's OK to have limits - really OK. The book pays only lip service to this concept. Babies needs don't just come first, they are everything.
*The book will convince you that your child has reflux and/or food allergies and is suffering greatly and you will not be able to think of anything else and no one will be able to tell you different, not even your pediatrician whom you claim to love and trust. Every mother I know has freaked out about food allergies and gone on a crazy elimination diet at some point while nursing. Me, too. Only one of our babies actually had any, though.

All that said, now that I have some experience with the book's pitfalls, I can make better use of it and forgo the guilt. When you read this book, keep in mind that it offers ONE way of describing ONE point of view about parenting - as well-respected as the Sears family is, this book is not the last word in parenting styles or even this particular parenting style.

Also, this book is NOT a substitute for an experienced pediatrician that you are willing to trust fully. Get one of those, for sure.

THE BABY BOOK YOU NEED!!!!!

I'm so happy there is an updated version of this book. I had an extremely "colic" baby in 2004, and this is the ONLY book (at least then) where you could look up symptoms and try to figure it out. This book saved my life, and because of the info on silent reflux (acid reflux to the extreme, but they don't actually vomit), my child went from crying for 8 hours straight to actually sleeping. I had gone to 5 or 6 doctors and even a specialist with NO help, they just said my baby had colic. Colic just means they don't know the answer. Most colic is actually undiagnosed silent/acid reflux! Until I read this book and brought it with me to an appointment. My son had all the 'typical' symptoms and only when I mentioned silent reflux did the doctors get a handle on what was going on. I have bought this book for every friend I have with a baby.
