Learn How to Design and Implement HAR Systems

The pervasiveness and range of capabilities of today’s mobile devices have enabled a wide spectrum of mobile applications that are transforming our daily lives, from smartphones equipped with GPS to integrated mobile sensors that acquire physiological data. Human Activity Recognition: Using Wearable Sensors and Smartphones focuses on the automatic identification of human activities from pervasive wearable sensors―a crucial component for health monitoring and also applicable to other areas, such as entertainment and tactical operations.

Developed from the authors’ nearly four years of rigorous research in the field, the book covers the theory, fundamentals, and applications of human activity recognition (HAR). The authors examine how machine learning and pattern recognition tools help determine a user’s activity during a certain period of time. They propose two systems for performing HAR: Centinela, an offline server-oriented HAR system, and Vigilante, a completely mobile real-time activity recognition system. The book also provides a practical guide to the development of activity recognition applications in the Android framework.

Ma Rainey's Black Bottom: A Play (Plume), by August Wilson

The time is 1927. The place is a run-down recording studio in Chicago. Ma Rainey, the legendary blues singer, is due to arrive with her entourage to cut new sides of old favorites. Waiting for her are her black musician sidemen, the white owner of the record company, and her white manager. What goes down in the session to come is more than music. It is a riveting portrayal of black rage . . . of racism, of the self-hate that racism breeds, and of racial exploitation . . .

Review
"The play's themes are not new to the stage . . . the black American search for identity . . . and the process by which any American sells his soul for what Arthur Miller calls the salemean's dream. Mr. Wilson's style, however, is all his own. . . . He has lighted a dramatic fuse that snakes and hisses through several anguished eras of American life. When the fuse reaches its explosive final destination, the audience is impaled by the impact."
—Frank Rich, The New York Times

"Extraordinary! Ma Rainey rides on the exultant notes of the blues!"
—Jack Kroll, Newsweek

"What a joy! Brilliant . . . explosive! One of the most dramatically riveting plays I've seen in years. You must see it!"
—William A Raidy, Newhouse Newspapers

"A genuine work of art . . ."
—Brendan Gill, The New Yorker

The insightful play is a mix of comedy and drama.
By A Customer
This play shows how the rage caused by racism can be manifested in unusual ways. Each character, the blues singer and her band, has a different means of trying to gain control of a racist society hoping to, thereby, overcome it. The author's surprisingly humurous dialogue accentuates the story but, there is no mistaking the gravity of these characters's pain. Wilson's writing makes the play fast-paced and gives excellent insight to the histories of the individual characters. The use of blues lyrics and speech make them not just backdrops but characters, themselves. The abrupt ending seems a little forced, but the play is extremely entertaining.

An understanding of blues and history!
By Official NetNanuNanu
Recognized as a great American playwright with numerous awards, August Wilson has brilliantly chronicled the black experience through decades. Depicting the 1920s, he wrote "Ma Rainey" in 1982, a real life blues singer.

The scene for "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom", takes place in a recording studio in 1927 where two white music executives are making a record with blues singer, Ma Rainey and a group of musicians.

Because the focus is on four male band members. it may take a while to try to put a face with each character, but within a short time, you grasp who the characters are - their values, beliefs and fears.

Ma Rainey's tone of voice is profound and nobody can push her around. Some critics report that Ma Rainey was exploitive and abusive to her band members, but I certainly did not get that impression. She was just tough and she knew how important her role was in blues music! Ma Rainey didn't take any crap from the white executives or anyone.

The dialogue interweaves with Ma's performance onstage and the band members during rehearsals. Their identities evolve and it's clear who and why they are as they share their experience with racist America and we then know their role in a racist society and industry.

A dramatic ending caps the story when the most bitter player reacts violently when another member steps on his shoes. To me, the incident seemed unjustifiable to provoke such a violent reaction by another member. It appeared out of place.

If you have an interest in the work of a great playwright or another interpretation of black experience through the decades, read more from this amazing man.

Talky, but interesting
By David Bonesteel
This play is set in a studio during the early days of sound recording. Ma Rainey's back-up band awaits the overdue arrival of the so-called Queen of Blues, discussing their lives and arguing about the music scene and their places in it. The white studio execs are practically tearing their hair out over Ma's tardiness and the demands that she is sure to make when she arrives. When she finally comes, she is every bit as demanding and overbearing as we expect, but also very perceptive-she is well aware that black artists are being exploited by the very record company people who continually urge her to be "reasonable" about the amount of money that she "wastes" on personal demands while recording the music that makes them so rich.
Although it features very good dialogue and some fine monologues, nothing much happens dramatically during the course of the play. There is an explosive finale, but it feels contrived and overdone, as though Wilson didn't know where to take his characters after all of the talking stopped.

An Emotional Conclusion to a Must-Read Series
By Austine @ NovelKnight
How does someone review the most emotional, roller coaster ride of a series conclusion they've ever read? In truth? I'm not really sure but I have a lot of feels that I'm struggling to put into words.

I adored A Darker Shade of Magic when I first visited the four Londons of V.E. Schwab's world. It quickly made my list of must-read fantasies. Then came A Gathering of Shadows and all hell broke loose. So much happened and so fast that I was left in a daze upon finishing and forced to wait for what seemed like an eternity until A Conjuring of Light released.

Honestly, I was dreading the release a bit because it meant the end of the Shades of Magic series and I wasn't ready for that. I'm still not ready and I've already read it. So right, the book. Was it good?

Do you really need to ask me that?

I'll start by saying that while A Gathering of Shadows was crazy action and all sorts of things happening at once, A Conjuring of Light slowed things down a bit but not in a bad way. Loose ends needed to be tied up and I think of the three books, this was the most emotional both from the story perspective as well as reading it.

AGOS left off on a major cliffhanger that's quickly addressed at the beginning of ACOL but that's not the worst thing the gang has to deal with this time around. Where the book lacked some of the action of previous installments, it more than made up for it with the relationships between all the characters. Everyone has a part to play and are forced to make heartbreaking decisions that had me flying from one page to the next.

Goodness, this is hard without spoiling something from a previous book.

So the big bad from Black London has decided to take over a new world and while it's a battle of who will come out on top at the end of the day, there's a lot of backstory dropped into this one that you don't see in previous books. Holland, for example, gets a whole damn history written for him and I was internally bawling (just wait, the tears broke through by the end). He's a character that I loved to hate in ADSOM, then he began redeeming himself (marginally) in AGOS, and finally came around in ACOL.

Though he can't hold a candle to my ships. Last book we met Alucard and I fell in love with an unavailable "privateer" (I mean, Kell is my one true love so that's alright, I'll fight Lila). The sailor and Rhy needed a happy ending and I was screaming every few chapters because it was constantly under attack. There were moments I may have had a minor freak out. No big deal.

Those two had the biggest struggle of my ships. To be honest, I expected more with Lila and Kell but the two had that unspoken relationship where you know they're a thing but nothing is ever said. It comes through their actions. They did relatively well throughout the whole book, though had their respective personal struggles as well as balancing the dynamic of the entire group.

Somehow I've kept it together this far but just give me a moment. I have to talk about the ending.

The ending.

It's over.

First, every time I see the word Anoshe I start tearing up (and yes, that includes when I typed it). But it's nothing compared to when I reached that first conclusion of the story. You know, that moment when everything is (relatively) alright and what's coming up is the wrap-up, the conclusion to the conclusion.

I stopped reading, 17 pages to go. And I sat there, fighting the tears and the lump in my throat because somehow all those emotions snuck up on me. I don't cry very often, like ever really. And never over a book.

Almost ruined the pages with tears, y'all. Moved it just in time.

And so I picked up the book once more and I read those last 17 pages and closed it, completing the end of an extraordinary fantasy series. I have never had such a strong reaction to a series ending. Ever. And I'm not sure I will again.

Don't let these books go to the wayside. If you haven't started the series and decided to read this review anyway, I'm very confused but alright, now go read them! And if you're putting off ACOL... I understand. You'll likely never be ready for the end but know that you're not alone in that. And I don't think there's anything else I can truly say as my heart hurts too much to put those feelings in words. I'll just leave you with one that, if it holds no meaning now, it soon will.

Anoshe.

definitely better than book two for me, but not quite as good as book one
By Sneaky Burrito
I loved the first book in this series and I was less than enthusiastic about book two. My main problem with book two was the magic tournament. I just wasn't interested in this as a major event in the book; instead, the events happening behind the scenes, so to speak, were much more interesting. Thus, I was still excited to read this novel, book three. Because there can't be TWO magic tournaments in one series, right?

And this was definitely better than book two, though, at least to me, probably not as good as book one. If you are a fan of the series, definitely read it. If you were put off by book two, I'd still encourage you to read this one -- it is much better, plus you get some resolution. If you haven't started the series at all, go back to book one. This won't make the least bit of sense without it. (Also there are minor spoilers for books one and two here.)

There aren't really any new characters introduced here. All the major players were in books one and two. They may have had minor roles in the previous books (e.g., some sailors) but they are familiar faces. (I kind of think the second book, in addition to having the magic tournament, was an excuse to introduce a bunch of minor players for a side-plot that occurs near the end of this book.) Anyway, our main characters are Kell, an Antari (basically a top-level magic user) who has been adopted into the royal family of Arnes (where a parallel London exists), Lila, a thief from this book's equivalent of our world, Rhy, Kell's adoptive brother, Holland, Kell's Antari nemesis from yet another parallel London, and Alucard, a noble from Arnes who has been a mentor to Lila, an adversary to Kell, and a lover to Rhy.

I'll be honest, I didn't like Holland in the previous books. I think we weren't supposed to. We find out a lot more about him, about what's been driving him, here, and he becomes much more sympathetic. Holland's backstory is a good way to work in character development in a book with no new characters. (We also get a little background on Rhy's parents, as they get a few POV scenes. I found it difficult to identify with Emira, Rhy's mother, but Maxim, his father, was a bit easier to understand. I am going to have to take these bits about them and go back and think about their parts in books one and two now, to see if their actions make more sense. It is a little odd placing these bits of information here, near the end of the series, with Rhy really coming into his own. But if you like character studies, there is something for you here.)

I'm going to take a detour here and talk about what I didn't like. There were a couple of mysteries hinted at in earlier volumes that weren't resolved to my satisfaction. We learned earlier on that Lila was missing an eye and had a glass eye, but we never find out the circumstances surrounding the loss of her eye. We can speculate based on what we find out about her abilities in this book, but that is not quite the same as getting actual answers. Also, Kell wonders a lot about his past in the previous books; even his name comes from initials carved into his arm (KL). The speculation about Kell's past is at its highest point when he is on the outs with the royal family in Arnes in book two, but he gets a little more information here and then just kind of drops it. It's almost like the author remembered she hadn't handled this at the last minute and inserted the bit where he is given key information at the last minute. It's not really believable to me that someone who spent all of book two feeling put out that he had basically been used as a possession by his adoptive family, never allowed to leave the city, etc., suddenly accepts the Arnesian royals and forgets about everything else. In the scope of things, I guess these are minor, but they stand out to me, nonetheless.

Anyway, another thing I didn't care for was the main antagonist (Osaron). Although he does have some flaws that are, of course, exploited by the good guys, he is just too one-dimensional for me. He is a creature of magic and although it is tempting to read human motivations in him, he doesn't really have human characteristics. (On the other hand, I generally like the strategies the "good guys" come up with to deal with him. There are some successes -- including by members of the royal guard, priests, and other everyday people, not just the powerful main protagonists. But there are also some failures.)

One final complaint: at multiple points in the book, an object that was desperately needed by the characters to further the plot was mentioned. Once, it was a map. Another time, it was a particular artifact (the name of which escapes me). The map, at least, had been mentioned going all the way back to book one, though Lila, to whom it used to belong, didn't know what its purpose was. But in any case, each time the existence of such an object was mentioned, some character knew exactly where to find one. (One could make a similar argument about some rings found by Kell at the equivalent of a magic flea market. Although in that instance, he didn't even know what he needed and it still fell into his lap.)

What I did like: I was just more interested in reading this book than book two. I got through it a lot faster, chose to read instead of doing other things, etc. That is nearly always a good sign for me. Events surrounding Holland kept me guessing, too. Holland was actually a big strength for me in this book. He's a tragic character, but he and Kell are also stand-ins for their respective societies' treatment of magic and Antari and the struggle to survive. Holland knows more but he had to know more to get by. He's broken inside by what he's had to do, but he retains a bit of the idealism or optimism of his past.

A lot more was at stake in this book than just bragging rights for a tournament winner, and that was also appreciated. Plus, we get to see a little more of the world here. (What we see fits nicely with what we already know about Arnes and the surrounding lands and sea.) Despite some heroic efforts, everyone takes losses.

Other aspects of the book -- the writing style, the worldbuilding, etc. -- fit right in with everything developed in the previous two volumes. There are a few made-up words, but they generally fall under two categories (1) describing things that don't exist in our world or (2) activate spells (e.g., for the Antari to travel), so these don't bother me overly much. Other than that, honestly, the writing is not so noticeable. It simply fades to the background as it does its job of telling the story.

Even though I had a lot of issues with this book, I'm inclined to go easy on it as far as a star rating goes. I feel that it does need more stars than I gave book two, but not as many as I gave book one, and that leaves a 4. This is probably more of a 3.5 for me, but I'll round up.

Perfect conclusion for the series
By Katherine
What an incredibly satisfying end to the series. I naturally had high expectations for this book after having loved the previous two books, but even still, this book surpassed my expectations. I cried throughout the final section of the book, not necessarily because of the actual events happening on the page, but because it was so emotionally fulfilling and felt like such a satisfying conclusion to everything. Everything I could have hoped for in a final book.

Global Capital, Human Needs and Social Policies, by I. Gough

Can the needs of capital ever be reconciled with the needs of people? To what extent can social policies bridge the gap between social rights and human welfare, and economic competitiveness in a global world? Building on his previous writings on political economy and human need, Ian Gough throws new light on these perennial questions in a series of penetrating and original essays. The conclusion is upbeat: social policy still has the potential to narrow (though never close) the gap between the drive of capital and the universal needs of people.

The Magic Mountain, by Thomas Mann

In this dizzyingly rich novel of ideas, Mann uses a sanatorium in the Swiss Alps--a community devoted exclusively to sickness--as a microcosm for Europe, which in the years before 1914 was already exhibiting the first symptoms of its own terminal irrationality. The Magic Mountain is a monumental work of erudition and irony, sexual tension and intellectual ferment, a book that pulses with life in the midst of death.

New translation of Mann's classic novel.
Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
One of the most influential and celebrated German works of the 20th century has been newly rendered in English by Woods, twice winner of the PEN Translation Prize. First published in 1929, Mann's novel tells the story of Hans Castorp, a modern everyman who spends seven years in an Alpine sanatorium for tuberculosis patients, finally leaving to become a soldier in World War I. Isolated from the concerns of the everyday world, he is exposed to the wide range of ideas that shaped a world on the verge of explosion. Considering what was to follow, the most poignant moment comes when Naphta, a Jewish-born Jesuit, defends the use of terror and the taking of life for the sake of an all-encompassing idea. Woods's work reads more naturally than the original translation, which, while faithful to the German, was stiff and forbidding. A necessary addition to any fiction collection.

Review
“All the characters in Thomas Mann’s masterpiece come considerably closer to speaking English in John E. Woods’s version . . . Woods captures perfectly the irony and humor.” –New York Times Book Review

“[Woods’s translation] succeeds in capturing the beautiful cadence of [Mann’s] ironically elegant prose.” –Washington Post Book World

“[The Magic Mountain] is one of those works that changed the shape and possibilities of European literature. It is a masterwork, unlike any other. It is also, if we learn to read it on its own terms, a delight, comic and profound, a new form of language, a new way of seeing.” –from the new Introduction by A. S. Byatt

Still One of the Greatest Long Reads
By Miles Prauer
I return to this novel again and again. It's a touchstone of the 20th century, one of the grand European intellectual novels that pose huge questions in terms of human beings in particular situations. The protagonist, Hans Castorp, is Mann's bourgeois Everyman, and it's wonderful haw a powerhouse intellectual like Mann can create a sympathetic but also mediocre hero who stumbles through a series of awakenings (and drowsings) on top of a mountain. But I'm making the book sound ponderous and pompous, and it's far too ironic and too seductive to be limited in that way. I came back to it because I was longing for a good long read. (Okay, not everyone's object of yearning.)

The Magic Mountain is also very much of its era. It was exactly luxurious institutions like the Berghof, along with those big hotel-spas in which the rich lived as they moved indolently over the face of Europe, that became impossible after WW I. But as the Settembrini-Naphta debates make very clear, the pleasures of unearned wealth and of relative peace are more passionate than Enlightenment values can address. Given the luxury, the lassitude and the license granted by tuberculosis and its promise of an early death, sexual, aesthetic and even mystical concerns become prominent. Mann gives us a great wallow in the Dionysian and doesn't, I think, endorse the life lit by reason unequivocally, although he's more skeptical about attaching value to a moribund leisure class. Which is only to say that I'm finding The Magic Mountain unexpectedly relevant for thinking about the One Per Cent and the rest of us on the flatlands.

The ordinariness of life and the brutal force of ideas
By L. Nery
Are we, as in late 2016, living in a magic mountain, from whose stupor and vague uneasiness we will be called out to destroy? Is that moist spot in Hans Castorp's lungs, that kept him up the mountain for seven years, also inside our own lungs, delaying the resolution of things? Will we soon have to come down the slopes to wage war against each other? Is there ever a resolution anyway?

I read this book more than 20 years ago, as a teenager. Then, I read about a personal story, perhaps symbolic regarding the customs and ideas of Europeans of that time. I identified with the main character and his uneventful life, broken from its rhythm not of his own choice. I cried in the last page. Now I read this through an entire new lens, which might be superseded by another in 20 years' time. But what I perceive is the human conflict in the slow, predictable and boring life of the sanatorium, occupied by ill people from all over the world. The tension rises between a few, while the majority is slow to grasp the intensity and the fervor behind the ideas.

It is one of the most exasperating books on earth, some chapters you just want to end, and you think of giving up altogether - but then something happens, you keep going. Nothing fundamental has changed (isn't it true of most lives?), but there is just enough to keep the interest. The passage of time is the leitmotif, and it matters for the reader and narrator, but not to our hero, whose nails and hair grows, and that's how he notices time. You, as a reader, know that you are reading the masterpiece of a literary genius, and some paragraphs are indeed "literary". But most are just there because the narration, like the passing of time, does not recoil from the ordinariness that consists most of human life.

The unremarkable can be staggering in its constancy and ability to involve your whole being. You pay close attention to Hans Castorp's life and think: is he wasting it? What is the purpose after all, why did he love, why was he a friend, why anything if it all comes to...?

An enchanting metaphor of life!
By Dr. Miguel A. Faria
The Magic Mountain is an enchanting novel by German novelist and short story writer, Thomas Mann (1875-1955), who received the 1929 Nobel Prize for Literature. This tour de force novel relates the story of Hans Castorp, a young engineer who goes to visit his tubercular cousin, Joachim Ziemssen at a tuberculosis sanatorium in Switzerland, The Berghof, "The Magic Mountain." Hans' last name Castorp perhaps alludes to the mythic twin Roman gods Castor and Pollux engendered in the close relationship between Hans and his cousin Joachim.

It turns out that The Berghof becomes a comfortable and dreamlike, totally enchanting place for Hans Castorp who finds himself unable to cut short his visit and return home to face the world as a young engineer. Instead, he becomes enamored of a charming aristocratic Russian lady, Madame Clavdia Chauchat, and the Magic Mountain itself. Moreover, it soon becomes obvious that Hans may also be infected with the tubercle bacillus, increasing the complexity of his situation and providing him with a valid reason to stay on the Magic Mountain. Castorp stays at the Berghof for seven years and only leaves to join the German army with the advent of World War I.

The novel provides a vehicle for Mann to discuss the advances and mysteries in medicine -- for example, the use of x-rays, which had only been discovered in 1895 by the physicist Wilhelm Conrad Roentgen, and Sigmund Freud's development of psychoanalysis and his theory of the unconscious. The novel also serves as a medium to describe complex personal inter-relationships and social interactions in society at large, and even more profoundly, the toll of diseases and human suffering, ultimately death and dying, as metaphors for man's existence, journey and final exit on this planet.

Simply, this is one of the best and greatest books of all times, and the Franklin Library edition is a collector's choice. Recommended without reservations with 5 stars.
