The History, Life, And Time of Dick Grayson

When it comes to Kyle Higgins Nightwing, I think the young writer has a solid voice for the character of Dick Grayson. It's fun and interesting to see Batman's first pupil come into his own and dealing with his own problems away from Gotham City. The thing is, at the end of volume 1, Nightwing returned to Gotham with his circus with bad results and learning a big secret about upbringing. Now it appears that Nightwing's presence in Gotham leads him to know a lot more about himself then ever before.

NIGHTWING VOL.2: NIGHT OF THE OWLS collects issues #8-12 and #0. Issues #8 and #9 is part of the "Night of the Owls" event/story, issues #10-#12 is the 3-part "Republic of Tomorrow" story, and origin of Nightwing is in issue #0.

The 2-part Night of the Owls story is during the Batman family cross over from Batman: Night of the Owls (The New 52), which deal with Nightwing fighting the current Talon for the Court of Owls and finding out Dick Grayson and the Talon have far more of a connection and history then Dick ever imagined. And the 3-part Republic of Tomorrow story deals with a shady cult group that claim to be Gotham's true savor and wants Nightwing dead for a murder he's framed for by unknown forces.

Kyle Higgins key theme in this volume is the inner workings of Dick Grayson's history growing up and the connection he has with Gotham. The Night of the Owls 2-parter is one of the best things about the event and for Nightwing himself. We get a good look at the family history of Dick Grayson's ancestor and his inner workings, as well as the origin of Dick Grayson's last name. It gives the conflict with the Talon and Dick a strong emotional story and payoff.

Higgins continues Dick's Gotham connections with the Republic of Tomorrow story by introducing a new character Sonia Zucco, the daughter of Tony Zucco, the man who murdered Dick's parents for an interesting angle. And the leader of the Republic is Paragon gives an odd and crazy look at hero symbols.

The #0 issue goes into the usual history of Dick Grayson, another origin that most people know about...but Higgins adds some additional flair and alternations to Dick's New 52 back story. Where as Dick was just physically capable to train under Batman, Higgins gives Dick more street smart, observant, and just much more of a smarter character for becoming Robin then just putting on a costume.

As for artist, Eddy Barrows art is still top notch. Super amount of detail and great page layouts. There are numerous fill-in artist throughout the whole book though, including Ruy Jose, Eber Ferreira, Andres Guilaldo, Mark Irwin, Gerado Borges, and Raul Fernandez. There is quite a bit of change ups in the art, but thankfully most of the artist follows Barrows art and style decently.

As for complaints, I found the Republic of Tomorrow story to be mediocre. It's not bad, but by the end of the arc it just didn't do much for the Nightwings character or the villain Paragon. The overall cohesiveness is pretty ruff with the 3 different stories. And the numerous change-ups of artist might drive you nuts.

Overall, NIGHTWING VOL.2: NIGHT OF THE OWLS is still a pretty good book from writer Kyle Higgins. The Night of the Owls story and Zero issues are great characters studies, and the art is pretty good throughout. But the Republic of Tomorrow story is nothing special and the big change up of artist hurt a good half of the book. I don't feel like this book is as strong as volume 1, but it still has its perks. I'll give it a 3 � score, but round up to 4 stars. Things will get dark for Nightwing and the Bat-family for the return of Joker in Nightwing Vol. 3: Death of the Family (The New 52).

This is a great tie-in to the Batman: Court/City of Owls. Furthermore, it reveals a new villian and Dick Grayson's origins as Robin! I do recommend this to any Nightwing fans, or if you just want to read a good graphic novel.

DC Comics delivers another great Bat-Family graphic novel with "Nightwing Volume 2: Night of the Owls." The hardcover collection contains issues 0 and 8 through 12 of the monthly title. It consists of three different story arcs that continue to show the grown-up Boy Wonder can hold his own inside and outside Gotham City.

"Bloodlines" and "The Gray Son" pit Nightwing against a powerful agent of the Court of Owls. His name is William Cobb and he is Dick Grayson's great-grandfather, trained by Haly's Circus to be a Talon since childhood. Can Nightwing foil Cobb's assassination attempt on Gotham City's mayor?

"The Tomorrow People," "Tomorrow Can't Wait," and "Inside Out" throw Nightwing in the ring with an organization calling themselves the Republic of Tomorrow led by a masked figure named Paragon. The group is intent on cleansing Gotham City of its "false" heroes and killing Nightwing for the deaths of two of their members.

"Perpetual Motion" gives readers an updated version of Dick Grayson's journey to becoming the legendary Robin the Boy Wonder. Think of it as a souped-up and condensed version of Robin: Year One. We get more details about the death of Grayson's parents and see the first time he goes up against Batman's archenemy Lady Shiva.

Kyle Higgins handles the writing duties for most of "Nightwing Volume 2: Night of the Owls." He does a great job interweaving the storylines of William Cobb in the 1900s with that of Dick Grayson's in the present. He also creates an excellent new organization and villain for Nightwing to go up against. They have impressive costumes and a memorable logo they use to show their presence. Higgins does a wonderful job giving Dick emotional depth and establishing an enthralling storyline while keeping the action fast-paced. Tom DeFalco helps out Higgins with the script for "Perpetual Motion."

Several artists contribute their handiwork to "Nightwing Volume 2: Night of the Owls." Eddy Barrows, Eber Ferreira, Ruy Jose, Andres Guinaldo, Mark Irwin, Geraldo Borges, and Raul Fernandez all get their chance at bringing Nightwing to life. They differ stylistically, but not enough to cause readers to be distracted from the overall plots of the tales. Most of the art is crisp and rooted in realism.

Eight pages of special features are included in "Nightwing Volume 2: Night of the Owls." Cover sketches and layouts are provided by Eddy Barrows. We get an unused cover for issue 11 by Barrows, Eber Ferreira, and Rod Reis as well. It also contains character sketches by Barrows, Brett Booth, and Kenneth Rocafort.

"Nightwing Volume 2: Night of the Owls" is an exhilarating continuation of the adventures of Dick Grayson. The series has quickly become one of my favorite Bat Books to read. The stories are consistently intricate and balance substance and action quite well. Kyle Higgins is welcome to stay on as writer of the title for as long as he wants.

About the Author
Rick McDaniel taught at the University of New Brunswick and Saint Thomas University before working in International Development with the YMCA, where he as instrumental in creating the YMCA Peace Medallion. He is also the creator and driving force behind a five-part documentary series called '80/20: A Developing World' and coauthor of the textbook A Two Way Approach to Understanding: Issues in Global Education. Dr. McDaniel describes himself as a Roman Catholic by birth and heritage and a Zen practitioner by nature and temperament. He studies at the Montreal Zen Center with teacher Albert Low.

Simply superb.

This is a worthy companion and follow-up to McDaniel's book on Zen Masters of China. Lucid, illuminating, and occasionally humorous, it is marred only by a single sentence in the "Epilogue," where -- unnecessarily and arbitrarily -- McDaniel offers a cynical and uninformed put-down of H.P. Blavatsky in particular and Theosophy in general. In the late 19th century, Blavatsky and her Theosophical co-workers made an enormous contribution to the introduction of Buddhism to the West. I was shocked by McDaniel's momentary betrayal of the Zen spirit of humility, compassion and open-mindedness. Nevertheless, I thoroughly enjoyed his books on Zen in China and Japan, and look forward to his forthcoming volume on Zen in the West.

A Chronicle of the Japanese Zen Masters

Richard Bryan McDaniel's Zen Masters of Japan: The Second Step East is clearly a labor of love -- part of a three book series (Zen Masters of China, Zen Masters of Japan, and the upcoming Zen Masters of the West) that presents a chronicle of the lives of some of the most important Japanese Zen teachers. The book begins -- after a brief prologue in China-- with the earliest Japanese pilgrims who brought Zen from China to Japan, and concludes with Soyen Shaku's 1893 visit to the World Parliament of Religions in Chicago. The book's prose is clear, clean and uncluttered, and a pleasure to read. The wisdom, poetry, and wit of the Zen ancestors -- Japanese Zen patriarchs like Dogen, Hakuin, Basho and Ryokan -- comes shining through. McDaniel frames the lives of these Zen masters in their cultural and historical context, so that the reader painlessly absorbs a reasonable amount of Japanese culture and history along the way. Who is this book right for? It occupies a peculiar niche. It contains too much information for someone just casually interested in Zen, and yet may not be scholarly enough for someone who's already well versed in it -- its ideal readers will be Zen enthusiasts/practitioners who know a little but not a lot about Japanese Zen history. As a reader, I'm somewhere in the middle of this continuum, so that I found myself both thankful to McDaniel for learning about Zen figures I'd never known and delighted by various nuggets of Zen lore and mondo (teacher-student dialogues) I'd either never known or had long forgotten, but also frustrated by the book's shortcomings. As a summation of stories already contained in a number of well-known English language publications (e.g., Ferguson, Dumoulin, Cleary, Suzuki, and Reps), the book lacks new scholarship, or a familiarity with their original Japanese sources. It often fails to distinguish between fact, as an historian might define it, and lore as it comes down through the Zen tradition -- what's biography and what's hagiography. It also presents Zen as Zen would like to present itself, without delving critically into what's lost and what's gained as Japanese Zen bows to political and economic pressures from shoguns, samurai, and nationalist Meiji restorers. And where, by the way, are the Zen matriarchs? Those criticisms aside, if you're a Zen practitioner just beginning your journey -- and you aren't too finicky about what's history and what's lore -- this book is a painless way to begin to familiarize yourself with Zen's Japanese history.

About the Author

Dr. Jose Galizia Tundisi obtained his PhD (Estuaries Ecology, 1969) at the University of S�o Paulo/University of Southampton and his DSc (Ecology, 1977) at the University of S�o Paulo. He is President of the International Institute of Ecology in S�o Carlos, Brazil. He was previously a Full Professor of Biological Sciences, Federal University of S�o Carlos, 1972-84; Full Professor of Environmental Sciences, University of S�o Paulo, 1984-94; and President, Brazilian of the National Research Council, 1995-99. His awards include the Gold Medal “Augusto Ruschi”,�Brazilian Academy of Sciences, 1986; the Moinho Santista Prize in Ecology, 1992; the Highest Brazilian Award for scientific achievement; the Boutros Ghali Prize for Environment and Development, UN, 1995; and the Commendador, Brazilian Government. He is a Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, the S�o Paulo Academy of Sciences, and the Ecology Institute, “Excellence in Biology”, in Germany. Dr. Tundisi is the founder and director of the International Institute of Ecology in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Dr. Takako Matsumura Tundisi graduated in Natural History and received her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences (Zoology) from the University of S�o Paulo, Brazil. She was a lecturer and researcher in Aquatic Ecology at the Federal University of S�o Carlos for over two decades. Today, she is a director of the International Institute of Ecology (IIE) and of the International Association of Ecology and Environmental Management (IIEGA) in Brazil, both research and consulting organizations that have developed numerous research projects in water resources management and water quality through mathematical modeling.

It was good to come across this GaaS book - a topic that is not often found in printed form but will no doubt start popping up more frequently as this development/operational model becomes even more prevalent in the near future across all manner of platforms. Written by industry veteran, Oscar Clark, this book is targeted toward experienced game developers making the transition from premium models (think $60 packaged PS4 game) to 'freemium' (the free game you play daily on your iPhone where on occasion you make a MTX purchase) and guides said developers in designing such a product from the ground up all while keeping core freemium principles in mind with every early stage design and infrastructure decision.

While the book adequately covers all necessary GaaS design and release elements ranging from the development and delivery of frequently updated content to the necessity of utilizing player analytics to further sharpen and hone product - the chapters never quite get detailed enough to offer unique and fresh insight and instead serves as a basic-intermediate level refresher on the topic that retreads many practices and principles that should already be familiar to the target audience. Some areas that I though could also benefit from more extended coverage include metric analysis and live ops engagement tactics but overall the amount of topic coverage provided across the board is impressively comprehensive.

Still, the volume as a whole is worthy of your reading/perusing time. Clark maintains a healthy perspective on the balance of good/evil in monetization and hooks that is mostly player-centric while still being sensitive to the business needs of keeping your product/company afloat.

A solid, enjoyable discussion of modern game design.

As a casual gamer, I enjoyed reading 'Games As A Service'. Author Oscar Clark has a depth of experience in the design and management of games and gaming platforms that is as considerable as his solutions are prescient; I found myself learning not only about the changing landscape of modern gaming and the player, but also basic theories of enjoyment and why we find video games so much fun.

Written as a cross between a textbook and a self-directed, design-directed professional musing (complete with worked examples of theoretical game design, expanded and expounded at the end of each chapter as the text further examines various aspects of design), Clark begins at a high level, discussing the basics: who plays, why we play, what is fun, what is a game, etc. He also analyzes the changing marketplace, particularly mobile gaming. As someone who is definitely not an early adapter of the latest and greatest, I found that his emphasis on the significance of the ability for anyone to release an app not only a correct assessment (from his later discussion as well as my own observation) but one important foundation for the remainder of the text.

Clark proceeds to present his case that building engagement with a game justifies, hopefully, future monetization. While I don't doubt his experience, I found that in his attempt to convince, real-world rather than theoretical, worked examples would have made a more successful argument. At some point, game developers and others associated with bringing a game to market must be compensated or there is no reason to exist. While there are free-to-play players of freemium services, in aggregate there is no such thing as a free game. How best can a company design a game that builds loyalty to such an extent that a player becomes a customer depends upon perceptions as well as the actual game mechanics. Clark makes an excellent case theoretically but how, literally, do companies manage to compete with a service that can technically remain free for those who will never subscribe, all on only a percentage of the game's actual players, i.e. those paying customers?

How, for example, does a game manage to continue to introduce content in order to keep the loyal subscriber involved while introducing the newer and less experienced (and possibly less inclined to pay)? The interests of these demographics overlap but they also conflict -- how does a company successfully cater to both within the same game ideas? How does the hardcore, competitive gamer enjoy a game marketed to a more social audience and vice-versa? Rather than theory, I would like to have read interviews of actual game developers and managers and their solutions and their failures. Clark engagingly discusses the changing nature of gaming as it relates to a service-, mobile-oriented marketplace and even addresses the development process itself (design, publishing, testing, etc.), so there is much here that is useful, even to someone not connected to the field at all. But I found that the connection to real-world development was missing. I also found the book's lack of graphics -- especially considering the subject -- a glaring omission. And on a more mundane note, the number of typographical errors is astonishing. It appears that auto-correct was employed but a proofreader was not in the budget.

Again, my perspective is as a casual player of online games. My hope is that Clark will revise, edit, and expand 'Games As A Service' to include screen shots, interviews, real-world business models that include financing a freemium project as well as continue to keep up with the changes in technology and how these changes affect the type of customer (immediate or eventual) that use technology for pure entertainment. In the end, Clark makes a good case that game design has undergone a permanent change; this is undoubtedly understood by those in the field and, more innately, by those who keep up with the rapid pace of the release of the latest games and their expansions.

Recommended for those studying game design and particularly those interested in the business of games. Oscar Clark's writing style is relaxed, yet full of content. I enjoyed it.

An excellent addition to the library not only of game designers

I was a part of the day when software was sold as 5.25 diskettes dropped into plastic baggies.

Just in the past few years the rules for marketing in a huge part of the software market – games – have changed.

Now delivery is online and the price is often nothing. Zero. Nada. Until the player gets hooked a little and starts buying add-ons.

The wonder of this approach can be seen in the recent acquisition of the company that created Minecraft and was purchased by Microsoft for $2.5 billion. Other large fortunes have been made for the publishers of games that proved popular on Facebook and other social media.

Giving it away free and then hoping for revenue down the line, called “freemium” in the trade or Free2Play (F2P), is the new reality.

This book will guide you to a surprisingly deep understanding of the phenomena.

It is, in fact, almost a scholarly work, but the presentation is down-to-earth, fairly light-hearted and utterly comprehensible.

An excellent addition to the library not only of game designers, but to those of software designers, developers and marketers for F2P is the new model that will soon be adopted for almost all software along with software-as-a-service.

Photosynthesis depends on protection (photoprotection) against the perils of intense sunlight.� The first line of defense among a cascade of photoprotective mechanisms is the safe removal of excess excitation energy within the light-harvesting system. The widely used indicator for photoprotective energy dissipation (thermal de-excitation of excited-state chlorophyll) is the quick, facile, and non-destructive assessment of non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (NPQ). By placing light harvesting and photoprotection into the context of whole-organism function, this book directs the use of NPQ to aid in the identification of plant and algal lines with superior stress resistance and productivity. Furthermore, this volume addresses open questions in the interpretation of the molecular mechanisms of light harvesting and energy dissipation, the resolution of which should aid in the development of artificial photosynthetic systems.
