Review
“We have used a number of editions of Loudon for our second year organic course. Although each edition has represented a major advance in the presentation of new chemistry, they have all retained the lucid presentation and order of topics that attracted us to the first version. The problems and examples provide excellent reinforcement of the contents of each chapter. The inclusion of modern methodology in the newest edition will prepare students for graduate school and demonstrates the continuing evolution of organic chemistry.” —Robert H. Grubbs, California Institute of Technology

So far it's the best chem textbook I've read (and I've read very many)
By Maddie Fraioli
So I'm a chemistry major and had to buy this for my classes. So far it's the best chem textbook I've read (and I've read very many). It doesn't oversimplify things which is good, because it makes the topics easy to understand without making me feel like it thinks I've never heard the term "science" before in my life (one of my pet peeves when it comes to textbooks). And it's under $150!!!!! I thought there was a typo when the chemistry department emailed us about the book we'd need. Considering the $386 and change General Chemistry and over $300 General Biology textbooks we science majors had to buy last year, this one is dirt cheap.

Problems are moderately hepful and sequencing could be better
By Jake Affanato
There are very few problems on proposing syntheses, predicting major products, or suggesting reagents and these types of problems are typical of any organic chemistry exam. There is also a large focus on quantitative rather than qualitative which is uncesseary.

About the Author
When she was five, her mother handed her a paintbrush and said, “draw your heart out.” Rupi Kaur views her life as an exploration of that artistic journey. Through her poetry and illustrations, she engages with love, loss, trauma, healing, and femininity. For Rupi, writing has always been a collective experience. At the age of seventeen she began sharing her work. The stage was her first love and spoken word is where she found her voice. Rupi pursued her love for language by studying rhetoric at the University of Waterloo. She began working on her first collection milk and honey, which eventually became a New York Times bestseller. Rupi’s passion is expression. For her that expression takes many forms. Her photography and art direction are brought to various spaces around the world and her poetry and prose are breaking international boundaries.

As a man, I learned.
By Gursimran.
I bought this book because I love to hear the stories of others. The problem with this book was that it had no stories, Rupi encapsulates you in an experience. I bought this to read to my significant other, I thought it may be just another pleasantry to share, but as I read it to her, I got so lost in the experience that I forgot that there was a person next to me. Feeling like it was an out-of-body type experience, I learned, and at the end of the day, I'll be a better father, son, brother, and lover because of it. So I thank the artist. Truly a pleasure.

love, and loss
By BethD
The style reminds me of a grownup Shel Silverstein book, had Shel covered abuse, love, and loss. Some of the poems hit harder than others, but overall it's worth a read. The book can be read cover to cover in a sitting, so commitment is minimal.

Fantastically moving book of poems!
By etbeaute
I stumbled upon this book when I was looking for some summer reading materials. The book is divided into four sections: the hurting, the loving, the breaking and the healing. It's a fantastically moving book of poems - each passage will evoke some type of feeling from the reader whether it is anger, sadness, regret, hope, love or happiness. For anyone who has experienced any relationship highs and/or lows, the book is very cathartic. I would recommend the reader take a day or two after finishing the book to process all the feelings. My favorite sections are the loving and the healing which captures the exhilarating feeling of early romantic relationships while also celebrating the different types of love and finally, highlighting the importance of self love.

How to Rock at BJD Face-Up: A Beginner's Guide to Painting Resin Doll FacesFrom Jesslyn Carver

If you're looking at this book, it is assumed you've already been browsing photos of ball-jointed dolls (BJD), and wondering why those dolls look so real. It's actually not hard! One of the major contributors to the effect is the resin they are made of--that's half the job. The other half is you and your tools.
The process is called "face-up." It's like make-up, but instead of adding color effects to an already living face, we are adding life to an otherwise "faceless" sculpture.
This book was written to help you get started! It begins with a good list of mediums and tools you will need to buy, with brief definitions and why they are used. Next we move on to basic color theory with a list of effects to help you understand how and why we are using them, and then we jump into the process. And there are about 100 pictures and examples to help along the way!
This book was written in the order a face-up usually happens. So you can follow along page by page and decide how and in what order you will do your face-up. The art is totally flexible and you can mix and match the effects as you see fit.
Jesslyn has scoured the internet, asked questions, and compiled all of this information together so you don't have to. As there is always more to learn, be on the lookout for future editions of this book with new information as well as future books to cover the vast world of doll customization. If you are a total beginner in this hobby then you're in the right place!

It Ain't Necessarily So: The Dream of the Human Genome and Other Illusions, by Richard Lewontin

Is our nature—as individuals, as a species—determined by our evolution and encoded in our genes? If we unravel the protein sequences of our DNA, will we gain the power to cure all of our physiological and psychological afflictions and even to solve the problems of our society? Today biologists—especially geneticists—are proposing answers to questions that have long been asked by philosophy or faith or the social sciences. Their work carries the weight of scientific authority and attracts widespread public attention, but it is often based on what the renowned evolutionary biologist Richard Lewontin identifies as a highly reductive misconception: "the pervasive error that confuses the genetic state of an organism with its total physical and psychic nature as a human being."

In these nine essays covering the history of modern biology from Darwin to Dolly the sheep, all of which were originally published in The New York Review of Books, Lewontin combines sharp criticisms of overreaching scientific claims with lucid expositions of the exact state of current scientific knowledge—not only what we do know, but what we don't and maybe won't anytime soon. Among the subjects he discusses are heredity and natural selection, evolutionary psychology and altruism, nineteenth-century naturalist novels, sex surveys, cloning, and the Human Genome Project. In each case he casts an ever-vigilant and deflationary eye on the temptation to look to biology for explanations of everything we want to know about our physical, mental, and social lives.

These essays—several of them updated with epilogues that take account of scientific developments since they were first written—are an indispensable guide to the most controversial issues in the life sciences today.

The second edition of this collection includes new essays on genetically modified food and the completion of the Human Genome Project. It is an indispensable guide to the most controversial issues in the life sciences today.

Amazon.com Review
Stephen Jay Gould calls Richard Lewontin "simply the smartest man I have ever met." And not the least opinionated, either. Lewontin has long been famous among biologists for a volatile combination of feisty leftism, scientific insight, and verbal skill, which have been displayed for the more general public in his essays for what has been called The New York Review of Each Other's Books.

It Ain't Necessarily So is a collection of some of his more characteristic reviews from the 1980s and 1990s. The Mismeasure of Man, by Stephen Jay Gould; Unto Others: The Evolution and Psychology of Unselfish Behavior, by Elliott Sober and David Sloan Wilson; sociological studies of Sex in America; and Ruth Hubbard's books on gender in science: all his essays are informative yet lively, with a high acid content--as when he begins his piece on the Human Genome Project with a definition of "fetish."

Lewontin's prose is worth reading in itself, but what lifts this anthology to another level is that it also includes replies and rebuttals selected from the New York Review's letters column--a forum that doubles as the intellectual's World Wrestling Federation. For the older pieces, he also includes updates, "where are they now" summaries to give a sense of historical change in each field. Assertive, brilliant, sarcastic, dense, wide-ranging--Lewontin may be challenging, but he is never dull. --Mary Ellen Curtin

From Publishers Weekly
Harvard biologist Lewontin is highly skeptical of the human genome project supporters' claims that complete knowledge of the human organism and effective gene therapies are just around the corner. His forceful critique of this multimillion-dollar gene-mapping project points out that our DNA is infinitely complex, and that mutations in genes are not the cause of, say, cancer, although they may be one of many predisposing conditions. In a bracing, lucid collection of essays, all originally published in the New York Review of Books, Lewontin makes bold forays into such fields as evolutionary theory, IQ testing, criminology, artificial intelligence, neurobiology and gender differences, exposing sloppy thinking and fallacies on all fronts. Scrutinizing "the development of modern biology from Darwin to Dolly" (a reference to the sheep cloned in 1997), Lewontin lambastes Clinton's National Bioethics Advisory Commission, charging that its report on the possibility of human cloning sidestepped fundamental ethical, religious and political issues. Lewontin is a formidable critic of simplistic, flawed biological determinism, which he sees at work in studies of identical twins reared apart; in feminist biologists' claim that females are the smarter, gentler, more humane sex; in sociobiologist E.O. Wilson's belief that the sexual division of power flows directly from innate differences between men and women; and in biologist Richard Dawkins's argument for the primacy of genes over the social environment. Several of these rigorous essays include an exchange of letters between Lewontin and his critics, making this an illuminating forum of ideas. (May)

From Kirkus Reviews
This wide-ranging collection of provocative essay-reviews from The New York Review of Books focuses on the biological sciences. Lewontin (Agassiz Prof. of Biology/Harvard) finds himself at odds with some fashionable orthodoxies of modern biology. In particular, he is skeptical of the determinist streak evident in many proponents of genetics. In a brief introduction he sets the context. As he sees it, part of the problem originates with the migration into biology of physicists and chemists in the 1950s, thrusting molecular biology into the center of public attention. Congress may be unwilling to fund the supercollider, but it did not blanch at funding the Human Genome Project, touted as the cure-all for myriad ills. Lewontin points out that, despite the geneticists' hype, in many cases the genetic expression of a congenital disease is not confined to a unique sequence of DNA. Moreover, identifying the genetic cause does not necessarily produce a cure. Lewontin's historical observations are also useful. For instance, while Darwin's formulation of natural selection as the driving force of evolution is not open to serious challenge, the pat notion of species often conveniently overlooks the considerable degree of variation within a species. As one would expect from an NYRB reviewer, Lewontin rarely dodges controversyconcerning the National Bioethics Advisory Commission's report on cloning, he wonders whether it was at all wise to give religious spokespeople input into a document on scientific policy. Likewise, he points out the key problem in research on human sexuality: whether the subjects can be trusted to tell the researchers the truth about their practices. The book's exploration of these and other issues is given additional depth by the inclusion of exchanges between Lewontin and some of the subjects of the reviews. Well-written, insightful, and a useful reminder of the complex issues still unsolved in the biological sciences. -- Copyright 2000, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Words do matter to Lewontin
By B. F. Mooney
Words do matter to Lewontin, and his portrayal of scientists as pontificating from a position of "objective truth" is not an indictment of individual scientists, but rather, a charge against the whole scientific enterprise. And the charge will stick. Each scientist exemplifies this, some to greater, and others to a lesser, degree. Speaking from 35 years experience as a scientist, I can say Lewontin is much more right, than wrong in his assertion. For the most part, the modern scientific enterprise is contaminated by scientists believing they are working at the "wholesale" level when it comes to "objective' truth, while the rest of people unknowingly work "retail," making culturally-biased statements which merely pass as "truth." This problem intensified after the Enlightenment, when natural philosophers (scientists) began to seriously confuse an arrogant superficial materialism/a priori rationalism with true science (information painstakingly and imperfectly derived from studying a world which is diffuclt or impossible to fully comprehend). Lewontin has caught on to this.

Interesting contrarian ideas, if you can take the hubris
By Nicholas Sterling
Other reviews have touched on the content of the essays in detail. I'll just say the following:

PROS:
- The topics are generally quite interesting, and Lewontin's comments are at times eye-opening, casting serious doubt on established doctrine.
- He writes very well (although he seems to be showing off a bit with vocabulary and the use of French).

CONS:
- He seems quite opinionated. I find his words compelling enough to be more suspicious of what others have said, but at times I don't really feel that I can trust his opinion. There are many examples of this, one being that he is thoroughly convinced of the validity of group selection and can't understand why everyone else doesn't see it. It's all so clear to him...
- At times he seems to delight in being nasty, in choosing hurtful ways to say things, as though that were part of his responsibility in reviewing the work of others.

Occasionally I found the book almost painful to read. For some of the essays, in which he tried to lay waste to the egos of others, he includes their responses as well -- so that he can take one last swipe at them. I actually did skip a few pages in the middle of the book, where he was taking one of these last swipes -- I couldn't stand it. I wanted to shout "Richard, go to your room!"

Still, the book is a thought-provoker, worth reading. Just be forewarned that the author gets a D-minus on "Plays well with others."

Looking beyond the hype
By Adam Rutkowski
When I first opened this book, I was a little disappointed that it was a collection of book reviews, not a set of essays in their own right. However, Lewontin's depth of coverage makes these essays more centered around the book topics than the books themselves. The fact that some of these reviews are 10 to 20 years old doesn't pose much of problem either, since they are usually still relevant and informative, and he provides updates discussing advances since they were written.
Lewontin has taken several topics of biology that are very much in the public eye lately, and tries to dispell misconceptions, usually to good effect. He clearly has opinions worth airing, and to have so many different topics covered here is a great bonus. It's also nice to see that he's not afraid to print criticisms of his reviews.
I would recommend this book to anyone with an interest in controversial topics like cloning or the usefulness of the Human Genome Project, but those with a little scientific background will probably get the most out of this.

Essential Reading
By Dr. Signe A. Dayhoff
What this book clearly demonstrates is that effective interpersonal skills are essential to the development and maintenance of any relationship - from family to friendship to work. That many of the personal and professional problems we experience everyday are the result of inadequate communication skills, lack of trust and self-disclosure, and inability to manage conflicts, anger, and stress.
Of special significance to more than half of the US population who report being shy, the author acknowledges the sometimes devastating impact of social fears on relationships and includes a section on working through shyness.
While the book is about skill building, it isn't just an exercise book. On the contrary, it smartly integrates psychological research data, theory, and exercises into a thought-provoking, readable volume. The approach is get-out-there-and-do-it experiential learning. Even though "Reaching Out" is an excellent text for classroom use, it is also very informative, practical, and useful for the self-help reader.

Genetics and Analysis of Quantitative Traits, by Michael Lynch, Bruce Walsh

Genetics and Analysis of Quantitative Traits brings together the diverse array of theoretical and empirical applications of quantitative genetics under one cover, in a way that is both comprehensive and accessible to anyone with a rudimentary understanding of statistics and genetics. What was originally envisioned as a single text has now become two, with the focus of this first book being on the basic biology and methods of analysis of quantitative characters. (The second book, Evolution and Selection of Quantitative Traits, will address the basic principles that govern the evolutionary dynamics of quantitative characters under the forces of mutation, random genetic drift, and natural and/or artificial selection, integrating the theory of evolution of such characters with existing empirical data from natural and domesticated plant and animal populations.) Written as a general text in quantitative genetics, the book will also be useful as a basic reference for the seasoned professional. Throughout, central theoretical concepts are developed from first principles. To aid the less statistically sophisticated reader, several chapters and appendices focus on the basic statistical tools needed to digest the book. Wherever possible, theoretical and analytical concepts are illustrated with empirical examples from diverse settings. Three major features of Genetics and Analysis of Quantitative Traits distinguish it from earlier work. First, it reflects the explosive influx over the past few years of quantitative-genetic thinking into evolutionary biology. Second, in animal breeding, enormous strides have been made in the development of new techniques for estimating breeding values (for the purposes of identifying elite individuals in selection programs) and for estimating variance components from samples of complex pedigrees. In this text's last two chapters, the authors outline the basic principles of complex pedigree analysis, without getting bogged down in technical details. Third, Genetics and Analysis of Quantitative Traits provides a broad overview of the newly emerging array of techniques for quantitative-trait loci (QTL) analysis, currently one of the most active fields of quantitative-genetic research. Genetics and Analysis of Quantitative Traits contains numerous fully-worked examples and illustrations of theoretical concepts, as well as over 2,000 references with indices by subject, author, and organism. In addition, the authors maintain a World Wide Web site featuring up-to-date lists of computer programs and on-line resources, and added information on various topics presented in the text.

Lacks exercises
By Martin Blom
This is overall a decent treatment of what its title claims it to be. The main flaw, as I see it, is the lack of exercises. The material is fairly heavy on mathematics and statistics and I find it hard to internalize a lot of the mathematical machinery without going through the calculations myself.

Apart from this lack of exercises I like the book. It is a bit too long (and far too heavy!), and it contains more historical background than what I need, but it gives a very thorough overview of the theory of the field, which is what is most important in the end. The great amount of text makes it more useful as a book to learn from than as a reference, but since there isn't anything else out there I suppose we are stuck with this for reference as well.

Comprehensive in scope
By Dr. Lee D. Carlson
I read this book with the expectation that it would give me an idea of the extent to which organism traits or phenotypes are determined optimally. Discussions on evolution frequently regard the functioning and attributes of an organism as being optimal at the particular time in its evolutionary history. A successful theory of evolution as a theory of mathematical optimization would entail a thorough understanding of the evidence for this hypothesis of optimality of phenotypes.
Another interesting question as to what effect a certain mixing of genetic factors, each one of these factors determining a phenotype separately (and optimally), would determine an optimal phenotype. An answer to this question would be important from the standpoint of transgenic strategies.
But this book is not about optimization theory in genetics, but one that introduces the reader to an analysis, in the authors view, of how evolution happens, and not a predictive tool of what ought to evolve. And, as the authors correctly point out, the time scales needed to evolve an optimal phenotype are not usually dealt with in discussion on optimization strategies. The authors also argue that optimization theories do not consider the expected phenotypic variance or the influence of random drift or mutation. Quantitative genetics does this, they state, and they define it as a mechanistic theory of the evolutionary process.
What is also interesting about quantitative genetics is that it was responsible directly or indirectly for a large body of statistical theory, many of these results being standard material in modern classes in statistics. It is also beginning to find an intersection with the theory of molecular genetics. The authors remark that eventually both quantitative and molecular genetics will have to answer to each other, and they give a taste of this in the chapter on marked-based analysis and QTLs.
There is no question that the reading of this book will give the reader a comprehensive overview of quantitative genetics. But, it takes an very long time to get through, and there are no exercises to test the understanding. Readers will need a fair knowledge of statistics to read the book, but there are three chapters and appendices in the back of the book outlining some of the necessary statistical concepts. The level of mathematics is the most sophisticated in the last chapter, which uses techniques such as maximum likelihood, expectation maximization, and restricted maximum likelihood. Readers with a background in bioinformatics will be very familiar with these techniques. Newton-Rhapson methods and Fisher's scoring method are discusses as derivative-based methods for solving the ML/REML equations and compared with the EM methods for doing the same. The authors are very convincing in informing the reader of the difficulty in estimating genetic variance components in real populations. Also, and most importantly, there are myriads or real-world examples given to illustrate the theory.
For molecular geneticists, and for those very curious about the connection between molecular biology and quantitative genetics, chapter 14, covering the principles of marker-based analysis, would probably be the most interesting in the book. The treatment is both historical, discussing the effects of entire chromosomes, and modern, discussing topics such as using markers or the construction of nearly isogenic lines and cloning individual QTLs. In the 'classical' approach to marker-based methods the authors discuss chromosomal assays, wherein a chromosome from one line is substituted into a standard genetic background chosen to have minimum variance. Since a chromosomal segment may contain a large position of the total genome, the authors take what could be called a 'coarse-grained' approach that utilizes genetic factors rather than a 'microscopic' one emphasizing individual genes. Such a strategy requires large sample sizes if one is to detect factors that result in extremely small effects. Examples of this approach are given, and the authors discuss its weaknesses, one being that a large chromosomal section can have QTLs that have effects in opposite directions, resulting in a net effect close to zero. Thoday's method is also discussed in order to point out the limitations of using flanking-marker mapping methods. The genetics of Drosophila bristle number is also briefly treated, but many references are given.
Recoginizing that direct sequencing of DNA gives a measure of genetic variation, the authors point out though that restriction fragment length polymorphisms are suitable for most purposes, assuming that these are detectable. The advantages and disadvantages of other techniques, such as randomly amplified polymorphic DNAs, are also discussed. The arithmetic involved in genetic mapping is treated in fair detail, the authors overviewing what is involved mathematically in map distances, recombination frequencies, and in the estimation of how many randomly distributed markers are needed to gaurantee that a portion of the genome is within a given number of map units of a marker. The strategies for mapping and cloning of QTLs are the main emphasis in the rest of the chapter. Some of the more interesting discussions here include: 1. The phenomena of 'linkage drag', wherein linked undesirable geness can be dragged along with the marker; 2. Candidate loci and their use in the study of genetic disorders. The authors outline in great detail the problems with this approach, such as linkage disequilibrium; 3. Gene cloning and its use in the study of QTLs. The authors discuss two different cloning strategies, namely that of transposon tagging and positional cloning. The authors emphasize the need for inbred lines for the detection of QTLs by transposon tagging to reduce variance from segregation at other loci. Because of this need, they seem skeptical of the general use of this technique, but give a brief argument as to its possible success using homologies in sequence data between species. The authors also emphasize the complexity involved in the use of positional cloning and comparative mapping and then outline an algorithm as to how to use NILs to do positional cloning of a QTL.

Great book for anyone interested in genetics: a classic.
By Arnaud Hulskes
Great book! Clear explanations and good examples. What makes it a really interesting book is that it explains both animal breeding, plant breeding and natural selection in ecological context. So this book has a very broad angle of subjects, but greatly focussed on the common factor: genetical quantitative traits and how to analyse them. The mathematical level might be slightly difficult for not so mathematic orientated people, but most is very well explained and some (parts of) chapters might actually not be misplaced in a mathematics teaching book as well. I have been waiting for such a book and expect it to become a classic. I highly recommend this book!
