Norman K. Denzin is the author or editor of more than two dozen books, including Indians� on Display; Custer on Canvas; The Qualitative Manifesto; Qualitative Inquiry Under Fire; Searching for Yellowstone; Reading Race; Interpretive Ethnography; The Cinematic Society; The Voyeur’s Gaze; and The Alcoholic Self. He is past editor of The Sociological Quarterly, co-editor (with Yvonna S. Lincoln) of four editions of the Handbook of Qualitative Research, coeditor (with Michael D. Giardina) of eight �plenary volumes from the annual Congress of Qualitative Inquiry, co-editor (with Lincoln) of the methods journal Qualitative Inquiry, founding editor of Cultural Studies/Critical Methodologies and International Review of Qualitative Research, and editor of three book series.

No "How-To" ... And That's The Point

I picked up this book after it was suggested I do my dissertation as an autoethnography. My first question of course was, "What's an autoethnography?" My second was, "How do I write one?"

I've read a number of texts and articles now and this might be the best, because it plays by autoethnography rules. Telling how to do something doesn't work for this approach to writing, rather, it needs to be experienced, resonated on, and rethought. This book does exactly that, and as I go to define autoethnography for my audience, I have no question this will be my most cited source.

Anne Charmantier, Research Fellow, Centre d'Ecologie Fonctionnelle et Evolutive,Dany Garant, Associate Professor, Departement de Biologie, Universite de Sherbrooke,Loeske E. B. Kruuk, Professor of Evolutionary Ecology, Institute of Evolutionary Biology, University of Edinburgh

Dr Anne Charmantier is an evolutionary ecologist working for the CNRS in Montpellier, France. Her research interests are centered on understanding the evolutionary mechanisms underlying variation in life-history and behavioural traits in natural populations. She particularly focuses on the role of environmental degradation; this degradation can be internal (i.e. senescence); or external (changes in the environment, including those induced by man). During her PhD in behavioural ecology in Montpellier, she discovered quantitative genetics while working with Loeske Kruuk in Edinburgh. She then spent three years as a postdoc in the University of Oxford before taking up a CNRS position in Montpellier to study evolutionary processes in bird populations. In 2011, she received the CNRS Bronze Medal. She is associate editor of the journals Evolution and Proceedings of the Royal Society B and currently holds an ERC Starting Grant.

Dr Dany Garant is Professor of Biology at the Universite de Sherbrooke, Canada. His research program is focussed on understanding the factors shaping the adaptive potential of wild animal populations that face changing environmental conditions by assessing both their evolutionary potentials and their phenotypic plasticity. After completing his PhD at Universite Laval, where he worked on the molecular ecology of salmonids, he moved to Oxford University where he was a NSERC postdoctoral researcher, working on evolutionary quantitative genetics of birds. After this postdoc he was hired by the Universite de Sherbrooke where he established a research group working on these areas of research. He has published several articles in the field of quantitative genetics in the wild and he currently serves as an associate editor for Molecular Ecology.

Dr Loeske E. B. Kruuk is Professor of Evolutionary Ecology at the University of Edinburgh, UK. Her research interests are focused on how evolutionary and ecological processes shape biological diversity in wild animal populations. After an undergraduate degree in mathematics, she realized that biology was more interesting and so did a PhD in population genetics at the University of Edinburgh. Her interest in quantitative genetics began during a postdoctoral position at the University of Cambridge, after which she returned to Edinburgh on a Royal Society University Research Fellowship. She has been involved with many long-term studies of wild animal populations, but with a bias towards Scottish ungulates and, more recently, Australian passerines: these have allowed her to investigate a range of issues such as quantitative genetics, the effects of climate change, senescence, phenotypic plasticity, natural and sexual selection, inbreeding depression and maternal effects.

About the Author

Ed Wilson is both a leading figure in the New York theatre scene as well as a nationally recognized theatre educator and author. Unlike any other author of theatre texts, he brings both extensive professional New York theatre and educational theatre perspectives to his works.

For twenty-two years Ed was the theater critic of the Wall Street Journal. He has served on the Tony Nominating Committee and the Pulitzer Prize Drama Jury. A long time member of the New York Drama Critics Circle, he was president of the Circle for several years. He is on the board of the John Golden Fund and was also for many years on the Board of the Theater Development Fund, of which he served as President.

Ed has produced plays on and off Broadway and served one season as the resident director of the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia. He also produced a feature film, The Nashville Sound, recently made available on DVD. He is the author of two original plays, a farce, The Bettinger Prize, and a play about Ponce de Leon, Waterfall. He wrote the book and lyrics for a musical version of Great Expectations. All three have been given a series of successful readings in New York City and elsewhere. Great Expectations was given a full production for three weeks at the Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke, Virginia. He conceived the idea of a musical revue of the songs of Jerome Kern which had a well-received try-out production at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.

Ed is also an author on three of the most widely used college theater texts in the U. S. The twelfth edition of his pioneer book, The Theatre Experience, was published in 2011 by McGraw-Hill. The eighth edition of his text Theater: The Lively Art (co-authored with Alvin Goldfarb) has just been released. The sixth edition of Living Theatre: History of Theatre (also co-authored with Alvin Goldfarb), was published in 2012; it is the most widely adopted theatre history textbook in the United States and is also available in Italian and Korean versions. Wilson and Goldfarb have also edited three editions of Anthology of Living Theatre. Ed is also the editor of Shaw on Shakespeare, most recently re-issued by Applause Books.

Ed has taught at Vanderbilt, Yale, Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. He was also the Executive Director of the Segal Theatre Center at the CUNY Graduate Center. Ed attended Vanderbilt, the University of Edinburgh, and Yale University where he received the first Doctor of Fine Arts degree awarded by Yale.

Alvin (Al) Goldfarb is a nationally known theatre educator and administrator. Al served as chair of the department of Theatre, Dean of Fine Arts, and Provost and Academic Vice President at Illinois State University. While at Illinois State University, he taught many students who have gone on to significant professional careers in Chicago theatres (including members of the Steppenwolf Theatre Company), in regional theatres across the country, on Broadway, as well as in film and television. Al served as President of Western Illinois University from 2002 to 2011, where he led the successful campaign to build a new Performing Arts Center, just as he had done at Illinois State University. He now holds the title President Emeritus at Western and continues to teach theatre.

Throughout his distinguished administrative career, Al continued to teach and publish. He has published articles and reviews in leading journals. With Ed Wilson, he is the coauthor of Living Theatre: A History and Theatre: the Lively Art as well as coeditor of The Anthology of Living Theater. Al is also the coeditor, with Rebecca Rovit, of Theatrical Performance during the Holocaust: Texts, Documents, Memoirs, which was a National Jewish Book Award finalist.

Al served as a member of the Illinois Arts Council and president of the Illinois Alliance for Arts Education. He has received a service award from the latter organization as well as the Kennedy Center Gold Medallion from the American College Theater Festival. Al also received alumni achievement awards from the City University of New York Graduate Center's Alumni Association and from Hunter College of C.U.N.Y.

Al received his B.A. from Queens College of C.U.N.Y., graduating Phi Beta Kappa, his M.A. from Hunter College of C.U.N.Y., where he studied with renowned theatre artists and educators, including Harold Clurman, Donald Oenslager, and Vera Roberts, and his Ph.D. from the City University of New York Graduate Center.

The book fails to go in depth into the historical influences that helped shape world and the theatrical tradition. Right book for my class

This was the required textbook and the Kindle version had to be the best decision I made. Using the Free Kindle App from Amazon onto my Macbook was the best idea for school. I could highlight and add notes. Plus when it was test time I could go back and review my highlights and notes then bookmark pages in order to study!

I particularly liked this text's descriptions of theater. The next is in depth and short at the same time, and talks about a lot of different aspects of theater that may be unknown to regular or theater majors

OVERVIEW of OFFICIAL GUIDE

The Official Guides for GMAT Review contain retired real GMAT questions, and are an essential component of your GMAT preparations. The GMAC places questions in order of increasing difficulty, based on its assessment of difficulty. This book has no overlap of practice questions with the Quant and Verbal Official Guides.

The 2017 edition contains 131 new questions out of the 957 total questions (including Integrated Reasoning). Excluding the 100 questions in the Diagnostic Exam section of the book, the new questions represent just over 15% new content. These are new questions that we have not encountered before; they are not questions recycled from older GMAC resources. One formatting change in the 2017 edition is that all questions (other than Integrated Reasoning) are now numbered from 1 to 907, whereas previously each section was numbered independently.

PROBLEM SOLVING

This guide contains 254 Problem Solving questions, including the 24 Problem Solving questions in the Diagnostic Exam portion of the book. The GMAC classifies question difficulty into three categories as follows:
Easy – 82 (32%, 19 more than 2016)
Medium – 55 (22%, 5 fewer)
Hard – 117 (46%, 14 fewer)

The Problem Solving section contains 36 new questions, with difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows: 18 / 8 / 10. This is in lieu of 36 questions from the 2016 edition that have been removed, with difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows: 7 / 5 / 24. In addition, 8 Medium questions have been downgraded to Easy.

GMAT Genius classifies question difficulty into five categories. Our assessment of this section skews significantly easier, and contains notable differences from the GMAC’s assessment. Our difficulty assessment is only 60.6% correlated with the GMAC’s assessment, demonstrating tremendous subjectivity involved in assessing question difficulty. Here’s our breakdown:
Super Easy – 20 (8%, 2 more than 2016)
Easy – 68 (27%, 2 more)
Medium – 109 (43%, 5 fewer)

ONLINE INTERFACE

The book includes an access code (see inside back cover) that provides 12-month usage of an online version of this Official Guide. Since the GMAT is a computer-based test, we believe that it is advisable to work though the questions online. We recommend that you use Exam Mode rather than Practice Mode, since we recommend that students practice using timed question sets that replicate test day conditions.

The online practice interface has improved significantly from last year’s version. The publisher implemented most of our recommendations. In particular, note the following improvements:
1) The test interface more closely resembles GMATPrep.
2) Exam Mode is now default mode, and you cannot skip questions in Exam Mode.
3) The overview screen shows the number of questions answered and that remain unanswered, for each question type and difficulty level.
4) All questions now indicate the corresponding book number, for easier cross-referencing.
5) Integrated Reasoning is now incorporated into the main interface, rather than using a separate interface.
6) The system now has a significantly longer period before it logs-out your session.
7) All session timing is now fully accurate.

Our only significant concern with the online interface is that the system limits you to 10 saved sessions. Once you reach this limit, you must delete at least one saved session in order to keep practicing. But doing so puts all the questions from that saved session back into the unanswered question pool. As such, we recommend that you separately track which question types / difficulties you have already completed. Furthermore, we suggest completing all Easy questions in a maximum of 10 sessions, advancing to Medium questions in max 10 sessions, and finally focusing on the Hard questions in max 10 sessions towards the end of your prep.

OTHER NOTES

The Official Guides are for practicing with real GMAT questions, not for learning the underlying concepts. The book contains a 40-page Math Review section that provides a very high-level overview of the math concepts tested on the GMAT. This math review will be highly inadequate except perhaps for the most advanced math students. Similarly, the brief introductions to the concepts tested on the verbal section are highly inadequate. We recommend that you use additional study materials to learn the math and verbal concepts.

Although all questions include answer explanations, many GMAT test takers are far from satisfied with these explanations. Math explanations can be brief and hard-to-understand for non-advanced students, and are sometimes convoluted or inefficient. Most GMAT test takers consider the Sentence Correction explanations quite cryptic. The Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension explanations, however, are reasonably good overall.

CONCLUSIONS

The Official Guide has three primary weaknesses, in our opinion:
1) An insufficient amount of difficult practice questions, particularly based on GMAT Genius’ assessment of difficulty
2) Math answer explanations that are too often either brief or convoluted and Sentence Correction explanations that are too cryptic
3) This particular version has numerous printing errors, as mentioned in the beginning of this review

Despite these flaws, the Official Guide is an essential source of GMAT practice. We believe that every GMAT aspirant must use the Official Guide (or a prior edition). For these reasons, we typically give the Official Guide a 5-star rating. Due to the numerous printing errors mentioned at the beginning of this review, however, we only give this edition 4-stars. For the best value, we recommend purchasing this book as part of The Official Guide to the GMAT Review 2017 Bundle + Question Bank + Video. If you already have the 2016 edition of this book, however, the replacement of 62 math questions and 61 verbal questions is not sufficient to make this book worth purchasing.

The Official Guides for GMAT Review contain retired real GMAT questions, and are an essential component of your GMAT preparations. The GMAC places questions in order of increasing difficulty, based on its assessment of difficulty. This book has no overlap of practice questions with the Quant and Verbal Official Guides.

The 2017 edition contains 131 new questions out of the 957 total questions (including Integrated Reasoning). Excluding the 100 questions in the Diagnostic Exam section of the book, the new questions represent just over 15% new content. These are new questions that we have not encountered before; they are not questions recycled from older GMAC resources. One formatting change in the 2017 edition is that all questions (other than Integrated Reasoning) are now numbered from 1 to 907, whereas previously each section was numbered independently.

PROBLEM SOLVING

This guide contains 254 Problem Solving questions, including the 24 Problem Solving questions in the Diagnostic Exam portion of the book. The GMAC classifies question difficulty into three categories as follows:

This is in lieu of 21 questions in 3 passages from the 2016 edition that have been removed, with difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows: 5 / 16 / 0. In this edition, the GMAC has upgraded 11 Easy questions and downgraded 10 Hard questions to Medium difficulty.

GMAT Genius classifies question difficulty into five categories. Whereas the GMAC assigns the same difficulty to all questions for a given passage (except in the Diagnostic Exam section), GMAT Genius assesses the difficulty of each question individually. Our assessment skews slightly harder, but contains notable differences from the GMAC. This Official Guide includes online access to 50 Integrated Reasoning practice questions. The IR set includes 8 new questions that we have not seen before, replacing 8 questions that were in the 2016 edition. The 50 questions consist of the following four types:

Table Analysis – 6 (1 changed)
Graphics Interpretation – 10 (1 changed)
Two-Part Analysis – 16 (3 changed)

For the first time with IR in the Official Guides, the GMAC has assigned a difficulty rating to each question. Each type has difficulty of Easy / Medium / Hard as follows:

Graphics Interpretation – 3 / 4 / 3

Except for Two-Part Analysis, our assessment skews significantly easier, and contains notable differences from the GMAC. Our difficulty assessment is only 25.3% correlated with the GMAC’s assessment, clearly showing that there is subjectivity involved in assessing question difficulty. ONLINE INTERFACE

The book includes an access code (see inside back cover) that provides 12-month usage of an online version of this Official Guide. Since the GMAT is a computer-based test, we believe that it is advisable to work though the questions online. We recommend that you use Exam Mode rather than Practice Mode, since we recommend that students practice using timed question sets that replicate test day conditions.

The online practice interface has improved significantly from last year’s version. The publisher implemented most of our recommendations. In particular, note the following improvements:
1) The test interface more closely resembles GMATPrep.
2) Exam Mode is now default mode, and you cannot skip questions in Exam Mode.
3) The overview screen shows the number of questions answered and that remain unanswered, for each question type and difficulty level.
4) All questions now indicate the corresponding book number, for easier cross-referencing.
5) Integrated Reasoning is now incorporated into the main interface, rather than using a separate interface.
6) The system now has a significantly longer period before it logs-out your session.
7) All session timing is now fully accurate.

Our only significant concern with the online interface is that the system limits you to 10 saved sessions. Once you reach this limit, you must delete at least one saved session in order to keep practicing. But doing so puts all the questions from that saved session back into the unanswered question pool. As such, we recommend that you separately track which question types / difficulties you have already completed. Furthermore, we suggest completing all Easy questions in a maximum of 10 sessions, advancing to Medium questions in max 10 sessions, and finally focusing on the Hard questions in max 10 sessions towards the end of your prep.

OTHER NOTES

The Official Guides are for practicing with real GMAT questions, not for learning the underlying concepts. The book contains a 40-page Math Review section that provides a very high-level overview of the math concepts tested on the GMAT. This math review will be highly inadequate except perhaps for the most advanced math students. Similarly, the brief introductions to the concepts tested on the verbal section are highly inadequate. We recommend that you use additional study materials to learn the math and verbal concepts.

Although all questions include answer explanations, many GMAT test takers are far from satisfied with these explanations. Math explanations can be brief and hard-to-understand for non-advanced students, and are sometimes convoluted or inefficient. Most GMAT test takers consider the Sentence Correction explanations quite cryptic. The Critical Reasoning and Reading Comprehension explanations, however, are reasonably good overall.

CONCLUSIONS

The Official Guide has two primary weaknesses, in our opinion:
1) An insufficient amount of difficult practice questions, particularly based on GMAT Genius’ assessment of difficulty
2) Math answer explanations that are too often either brief or convoluted and Sentence Correction explanations that are too cryptic

Despite these flaws, the Official Guide is an essential source of GMAT practice. We believe that every GMAT aspirant must use this book (or the prior edition). For these reasons, we give this book a 5-star rating. For the best value, we recommend purchasing this book as part of The Official Guide to the GMAT Review 2017 Bundle + Question Bank + Video. If you already have the 2016 edition of this book, however, the replacement of 62 math questions and 61 verbal questions is not sufficient to make this edition worth purchasing.
