In Cynthia Kadohata's lively, lovely, funny and sad novel -- winner of the 2005 Newbery Medal -- the Japanese-American Takeshima family moves from Iowa to Georgia in the 1950s when Katie, the narrator, is just in kindergarten. Though her parents endure grueling conditions and impossible hours in the non-unionized poultry plant and hatchery where they work, they somehow manage to create a loving, stable home for their three children: Lynn, Katie, and Sammy. Katie's trust in, and admiration for, her older sister Lynn never falters, even when her sisterly advice doesn't seem to make sense. Lynn teaches her about everything from how the sky, the ocean, and people's eyes are special to the injustice of racial prejudice. The two girls dream of buying a house for the family someday and even save $100 in candy money: "Our other favorite book was Silas Marner. We were quite capitalistic and liked the idea of Silas keeping all that gold underneath the floorboards." When Lynn develops lymphoma, it's heartbreaking, but through the course of her worsening illness, Katie does her best to remember Lynn's "kira-kira" (glittery, shining) outlook on life. Grade 6-8--Katie's first word is "kira-kira," the Japanese word for "glittering," and she uses it to describe everything she likes. It was taught to her by her older sister, Lynn, whom Katie worships. Both girls have trouble adjusting when their parents move the family from Iowa to a small town in rural Georgia, where they are among only 31 Japanese-Americans. They seldom see their parents, who have grueling jobs in chicken-processing plants. Then Lynn becomes deathly ill, and Katie is often left to care for her, a difficult and emotionally devastating job. When her sister dies of lymphoma, Katie searches for ways to live up to her legacy and to fulfill the dreams she never had a chance to attain. Told from Katie's point of view and set in the 1950s, this beautifully written story tells of a girl struggling to find her own way in a family torn by illness and horrendous work conditions. Katie's parents can barely afford to pay their daughter's medical bills, yet they refuse to join the growing movement to unionize until after Lynn's death. All of the characters are believable and well developed, especially Katie, who acts as a careful observer of everything that happens in her family, even though there is a lot she doesn't understand. Especially heartbreaking are the weeks leading up to Lynn's death, when Katie is exhausted and frustrated by the demands of her sister's illness, yet willing to do anything to make her happy. It's Lynn who shows Katie the glittering beauty (kira-kira) of the stars and who prepares Katie for the prejudice she will encounter as one of the few Japanese American kids in their school. But when Katie is 10, Lynn, 14, falls ill, and everything changes. Slowly the roles are reversed; Katie becomes caregiver and does what Lynn has taught her. There's no surprise. It's clear that Lynn will die, and Katie goes through all the stages of grief. The real story is in the small details, never self-consciously "poetic" but tense with family drama. In her first novel for young people, Kadohata stays true to the child's viewpoint in plain, beautiful prose that can barely contain the passionate feelings. Just as heart wrenching as the sisters' story is what Katie knows of her father's struggle, whether it's his backbreaking work in the factory or his love for his family. Intriguing Award Winning Young Reader Book

I initially considered purchasing this book because it was a similar sounding book title to my niece's name. I thought she would like the connection. I finally decided on the book because of earning the book award. The story seemed innocent and heartwarming enough that I thought my niece might enjoy it at her age of 10. She was delighted to get the book and her mother was intrigued by the story as well. I look forward to hearing their reactions when they are finished reading it!

Markets of Dispossession is a theoretically sophisticated and sobering account of the consequences of these initiatives.

Julia Elyachar studied the efforts of bankers, social scientists, ngo members, development workers, and state officials to turn the craftsmen and unemployed youth of Cairo into the vanguard of a new market society based on microenterprise. She considers these efforts in relation to the alternative notions of economic success held by craftsmen in Cairo, in which short-term financial profit is not always highly valued. Through her careful ethnography of workshop life, Elyachar explains how the traditional market practices of craftsmen are among the most vibrant modes of market life in Egypt. Long condemned as backward, these existing market practices have been seized on by social scientists and development institutions as the raw materials for experiments in “free market” expansion. Elyachar argues that the new economic value accorded to the cultural resources and social networks of the poor has fueled a broader process leading to their economic, social, and cultural dispossession.

This made us fight more!!!

This is a great book. it dives deep into why we fight. it ignores how to fight. whats fair what not. whats healthy what is not, all do not matter. what is actually important is how we feel and how we cause each other to feel. just because you are right does not mean that I am not hurting. a bit of warning for this book. there is a good chance this will make you fight more to begin with because you will talk about things you normally both just let slide. until you can learn to truly empathize with your spouse things will never get better but when you do your spouse will know that you know and care about THEM.

Worth getting, in a relationship or not

My "boyfriend" and i were together for a year, broke up a year ago, and have periodically had stints where we don't talk much at all...but we are still in each others lives.I always felt paralyzed by this silence,but felt I had no choice but to be that way. If I spoke to him as often as I wanted he would usually "stonewall" or shut down, which would lead me to feel desperate, saying ever more critical things until he would eventually explode at me....or even worse,he would just grow ever more distant and thus give me constant anxiety.
This is the first book i have read amidst countless others, in which I could relate readily to almost all of the stories of couples given as examples. I felt like, Dr. Sue is writing about ME! Mildly creepy in a twilight zone kind of way, but very effective.
This book helped me to understand a powerful, simple truth that made even our most painful arguments or separations make sense: everyone wants to feel nurtured and loved. Even the most awful thing I ever said to anyone was an attempt to connect, and so it is with everyone else I care about...though that is an overly simplistic explaination.
With this knowledge in hand, our relationship is getting much better. And of course there is more to this book than that.
This book has the power to open up an emotional can of worms within the reader, and also within the relationship the reader intends to target with its advice. Be prepared, and go at it with all of your heart.

The relationship book all men & women should read. You will learn something about yourself & your partner.

This book will really help you understand yourself and the person you are trying to connect with. I read this book when me and my wife were having some very troubling times in our marriage. It helped me discover why I was doing and saying the things I was, and it also helped me understand what issues my wife was having. Now this didn't really help her that much because she didn't read the book, but just knowing the reason's why was very helpful as it made me realize that I was not the sole reason for her issues. This book will also help you communicate better to other people as well as it's main focus is not on what is being said but the emotion connected to what is being said. It is that emotion that you really need to focus on, so that way you can respond in a way that they feel connected to you. If you have ever had a conversation with your wife and she is explaining something to you and you are like yeah I get it. Then she responds no that's not it maybe I am just explaining it wrong. Well she is explaining it wrong because she is not explaining her emotional attachments to the events that transpired. She is merely explaining the event. For us men to understand what most women want they have to explain the emotional attachment, that is the only way two people can connect properly. Most women don't want us to solve the problem they just want us to recognize their emotional need and address that need. This book helps you pick on those ques and also teaches you how to express your's.

About the Author
In the early 1940s, a loving father crafted a small, blue, wooden engine for his son, Christopher. The stories that this father, the Reverend W. Awdry, made up to accompany this wonderful toy were first published in 1945. He continued to create new adventures and characters until 1972 when he retired from writing. Reverend W Awdry died in 1997 at age 85.

I would definitely recommend this to be added to a child's collection

My 3 year old son LOVES Thomas and Friends. He actually loves any type of train. Before bed, he chooses one of these books to read. Sometimes I have to make him choose another because we've read these so much. He's even memorized some of the parts. I would definitely recommend this to be added to a child's collection. I really like the nice little box they are stored in. It helps to teach my son how to put things away when he's done with them and the value of taking care of his things.

Excellent books for a Thomas loving toddler

I purchased this set for my two and a half year old daughter. She loves Thomas and these books get read again and again. The set includes four sturdy board books and a small carrying case. The books are on the smaller side, only about 5.5x4 inches, making them easy for small hands to manipulate. The colors are vibrant and the pages with Thomas's smiling face have attracted he attention of her 9 month old sister as well.

The stories themselves are nothing to be super impressed by, but at her age they are perfect. You can tell the titles are loosely based on other books in the bright and early series like go, dog, go vs go, train, go. I would recommend these books for Thomas fans that are 1-4 years old. I think older kids would be less intrigued by the simple story line and repitition that younger kids crave.

My only complaint is that the Velcro on the box itself is very difficult to get open and lead to early destruction of the box. Overall I would say this set is still an excellent value for the money when you consider that I pail $7.42 for four books and other bright and early board books retail for $4.99.

Cute and afodable little train book set.

When I first opened the package, I was super surprised at how small the box of books were. I was expecting a box at least twice its size based on the pictures on Amazon, and the pictures from other users, so at first I was a little disappointed… BUT NOT MY TODDLER, when he seen the box come out of the package, his eyes lit up like a Christmas tree on Christmas morning… He said Thomas, My Thomas, Thomas for me. He was overly excited to see this. The box contains 4 stories of Thomas. We went in to the reading corner and read the stories, after each story he was say Read one more time. Read one more time. The books are made of sturdy cardboard, definitely durable enough for his little 2 year old hands. These books will become and asset at bedtime for us. I would recommend these books for anyone little train lovers out there. The box is nice so that you can keep them all together.

Cheapest jumping lesson you will ever have.

I am, to say the least, a beginner jumper. Truthfully I've dabbled in it with a wonderful coach. However, Wendy has written a book where I see things that would not only help me with my jumping flaws, but with all my other riding as well. I continue to be amazed in how Wendy sees, processes, and helps the equestrian with these "small" fixes. By my horse's reaction to Wendy's lessons, your horse will love you for trying just one these fixes - and there are 40! I liked the the book so much, I had to buy one for my jumping coach.

There is something in the book for you whether you are navigating your first cross rail or tackling grand prix courses. What's even more brilliant is there's something in here for you even if you don't jump. When you ride do you ever feel insecure, loose your stirrups, jump ahead or get left behind, pull on the reins for balance, feel sore and achy afterwards? Do you feel frustrated that you really are trying to do what your trainer is telling you, but you still don't get it? In clear, concise language with great illustrations and photographs, each lesson addresses challenges common to all riders. Jumping problem? FIX IT. Easy. Really!

This is a great book right from the start with an Introduction which every riding instructor should read NOW. If you're not an instructor you will reap untold benefits from this truly helpful instruction book. Read the Introduction and then the lessons. Lessons are short, concise, excellently explained in print and skillfully illustrated with plentiful clear photos and drawings. I received this book as a gift. What a gift! I don't think this book can be over rated. If you don't believe me then read the back cover endorsement of this book by Melanie Smith Taylor.
