Bets book on ethical hacking available, hands down. Buy this book if you are in infosec/ethical hacking/information security! Pricey and worth every penny! I have been in Penetration Testing and Ethical Hacking for several years and yet this book gave me an entirely new perspective and insight into area's I'd not considered. Mr. Baloch presents things in a straight forward manner, well explained and with unique perspectives on many areas of white hat hacking in relation to information security. It is my pleasure to recommend his book and blog for those wishing to acheive an insight and gain valuable knowledge into Ethical Hacking and Information Security in general.

The grammar is very poor. I know the guy is from Pakistan, but the editor should have done a better job catching the author's mistakes. I am shocked by how bad the grammar is throughout. It makes it harder to understand what he is saying. Also, for many things, he does very little explaining of how things work.

A great reference manual, updated and to the point, This book gives you great insights as to how an hacker can affect a security system. It teaches planning and preparation and is great for any one charged with offensive or defensive security whether at home or corporate. A great source to walk you through from beginning to end of penetration test. Both beginners and advanced users alike will learn from this good book.

Preface

When this book was first published in 1969, African-Americans faced a serious crisis arising from the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Angered by this act, blacks took to the streets in cities around the country, demonstrating their outrage by massive acts of property destruction. In general, white individuals and institutions responded to the tragedy of the assassination by attempting to make some amends for past injustices. Colleges and universities recruited black students in greater numbers than ever before, and programs of African-American and African studies were organized on a wide scale. It appeared that equality for blacks had finally become an issue of critical importance.

However, by the time the second edition appeared in 1975, little change in the status of African-American people relative to that of white people had come about, but many changes in the mind and mood of African-American people had occurred, mainly in the ascendancy of nationalist sentiment in the black community. Black nationalist organizations thrived until the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government agencies commenced a systematic campaign to destroy this movement. Because of this campaign and the inevitable internal dissension within these organizations, the movement virtually collapsed. Nevertheless, with the advent of affirmative action, some progress was made in the status of African-Americans in the United States. For a brief time there was an official commitment to racial equality.

With the third edition in 1987, the mood of the country had changed, and conservatism had become the dominant ethos of American politics and of the country as a whole. The right-wing administration of Ronald Reagan and the egocentricity of the American people combined to mount a serious attack on compensatory justice. They were joined in this effort by black conservatives who opposed affirmative action and other measures to improve the lot of African-Americans, insisting that blacks must rely on individual initiative and self-help rather than government assistance. These forces succeeded in reversing some of the gains that African-Americans and others had made through intensive struggle.

The fourth edition in 1993 found African-Americans facing additional challenges of major proportions: acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), adolescent pregnancy and childbearing, crack cocaine and other substance abuse, homelessness, and widespread homicide, among others. By promoting and condoning racial oppression through the years, the government must bear major responsibility for the impact of these problems on African-Americans.

In this, the fifth edition of the book, it should be noted that there has been little, if any, change in the problems enumerated in the fourth edition. In addition, there has been an intensified effort to end affirmative action, thereby impeding an important avenue to black progress. Because of this, a chapter on the subject has been added, along with some other changes, including a chapter on crime and justice.

Although this book is a sociological study of African-Americans, it addresses the general reader as well as the professional student of society. It is hoped that sociological perspective and analysis have not been sacrificed.

What's on your mind when you talk?

Time may be reflected in text in two ways: the flow of the utterance itself, and the temporal frame referred to in what is said. Both of these basic facts of language may be related to the what goes on in our minds when we talk, to allow for the generation of what is said and for the possibility of temporal displacement of its contents. Chafe explores implications of these facts by examining observed discourse, e.g. in connection with topicality (referents already on our minds). He does not carry out structural formalizations of his suggestions, nor relate them to chronometric studies of language processing, but does have a nice example from the Senecan langugage. His promise of a research program on these topics is left for the future, and for a more enlightened psychology.

I think this approach is a link between social psychology and linguistics, the author is a psychologist but his analysis is purely linguistic; a thorough consideration of the elements to consider in analysis that will account for speech and thought, as much as possible in regards to their difference specially in speed.

A fabulous book about how communication. If it was read by tech writers, I think a lot of tech writing (as well as legal) would be infinitely better. At the root of many of the ideas is how we hear and process things in our brain - it may not be "real" linguistics (although the author is a linguist) but it's really useful.

I read this book and went on a fast for a week. I wrote down what I was fasting for and Prayed over the list. You would not believe the results!!! I am making it a habit to go on a Fast at least once a month and when the Lord leads. This book is a must read, because he tells you what he experienced because of Fasting. If you are like me, you want to know the truth and he tells the truth and uses scripture to back it up. If you want to go higher in God, purchase this book and start studying the scriptures on Fasting. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

Powerful!

Some people talk about it and some people do it. This saying goes double for Mahesh Chavda. He practiced the art of Biblical prayer and fasting for over twenty years before he ever started teaching it. And this practice has born fruit in his life.

From the improved medical condition of an autistic boy when Chavda was a social worker to miraculous healings and transformed lives by the thousands-his personal experience demonstrates that prayer and fasting works: that God brings into partnership with Him those who join Him in this way.

Chavda teaches that the Bible is clear that the overcoming believer is one who both prays and fasts - yet fasting on anything resembling a regular basis has all but disappeared from most groups of believers. Chavda believes prayer and fasting is a lifestyle God dearly wants for all believers, and that it is one that God blesses. Those blessings do not necessarily flow to the person practicing prayer and fasting (God does not have a frequent prayer and fasting rewards program!), but rather unleashes God's blessings on those for whom we pray and fast.

This book is filled not only with dozens of real-life examples of the results of prayer and fasting, but also serves as a very practical guide of how to do it. This book is not a casual read. The reader will be challenged to look into the mirror of God's word and examine their own accountability for participating in this heavenly calling.

I have read alot of books on fasting from a theology view, but they lack practical hands knowledge. Mahesh gives a hands on approach to fasting like never before written in the Christian realm. Very balanced Biblical and strong in purpose this book has truly changed my life and view on fasting. Heaven is taking note of this book. If you feel called to the ministy and don't know or understand alot about fasting this is a must.

This book gives a thorough presentation about projection-based model order reduction (MOR) techniques, including AWE and PRIMA. It is very helpful for anyone who wants to implement these algorithms. Detailed step-by-step explainations are presented in a clear way so that I can easily convert them into C codes. However, the readers must have good background knowledge on related matrix computation techniques so that they can follow the text more smoothly. It's recommended to finish chapter 9 of the bible textbook "Matrix Computations" by Gene Golub and Charles Van Loan before diving into PRIMA algorithm.

Gr 8 Up—Like most transgender children, Katie, who was born and raised as a boy named Luke, was aware of her difference early on, though it was years before she found the word to describe herself. Other family problems made it easy for her to withdraw into a serious depression without being noticed. When Katie finally came across the word "transgender" and read descriptions of what it meant, she risked everything and reached out to her mother, who was supportive and relieved to understand her child better. She promised to help Katie make the transition to her internally identified gender of female, if Katie promised not to kill herself. The book opens with Katie starting college. Having chosen to be an out and open transgender activist while still in high school, she decided to "go stealth" at college, a term used to describe transgender people who prefer not to be identified as such. The writing style is open and straightforward, although much of the dialogue is awkward and extraneous. The book starts out a bit slowly and picks up significantly in the later half. Rethinking Normal offers an honest, thought provoking tale of a small boy struggling to find his true identity as a woman.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I sat down and opened up Rethinking Normal for the first time, but I quickly found myself in the shoes of an amazing person telling her life story in honest detail. This is the story of Ms. Hill's journey to self discovery in spite of pain and suffering by her peers, that is often heart wrenching and uplifting. At times, as the reader, I felt like I needed to give the author a big hug and tell her it will be okay. Ms. Hill's story is touching, and brings awareness to a less than aware audience. It is a journey that the reader will take with the author as she recounts her tales of sadness, despair, love, and discovery that ultimately leads to her being the strong intelligent woman that she is today. This is a book that should be read by anyone and will help shed light on what it is like to grow up transgender in modern society, and will truly make you rethink what is normal.

Modern day Cinderella

On the strong side, this book gives a good insight into lives of transgendered people. There's a lot of emotion embedded into these pages: both high and lows as we get familiar with Katie's story. As it turns out, these experiences are not that different from common people (aka cisgendered). In a lot of instances Katie acts and feels and even falls in love like any girl her age would do. It clearly shows how unbased are society's fears and prejudices against transgender. And it calls for change to happen.

However, there is a reason why people should not write memoirs about themselves, especially at young age. Overall it lacks maturity and reeks a lot of judgments that author herself has. Like calling someone "probably gay" who can be easily identified from the events in the book. Or giving only onesided opinion about people that she did not like for some reason. But worst of all was her recounting on relationship with Arin.

Poor Arin... From Katie's perspective it seems that she never saw him as a man in her life. In other words he was friend-zoned, a feeling that is quite familiar to a lot of unhappy guys. Making it all public is a very rude thing to do - especially for someone who works very hard to build a masculine identity.

Informative and touching

Outstanding read. There were some very emotionally poignant moments, and the story overall gave me a personal and touching glimpse into a lifestyle I knew nothing about, and was too afraid to ask about. About the Author
Bill Nye is a scientist, engineer, comedian, and inventor. He has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University where he studied under Carl Sagan, and worked on the 747 as an engineer at Boeing before creating and hosting his much-loved Emmy award-winning PBS/Discovery Channel show Bill Nye the Science Guy. He holds six Honorary Doctorate degrees from Lehigh University, Willamette University, Quinnipiac University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Goucher College, and Johns Hopkins, and teaches at Cornell regularly as a visiting professor.

Corey S. Powell is the former editor in chief of American Scientist and Discover, where he is currently editor at large and continues to write the "Out There" column and blog. He is also a visiting scholar at NYU's SHERP science journalism program, as well as a freelance writer for Popular Science, Smithsonian, Nautilus, and Aeon; his article "The Madness of the Planets" appears in The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2014. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, two daughters, and a small collection of Permian-era fossils. He has collaborated with Bill Nye on Undeniable and Unstoppable.

Shows keen scientific insight and a great sense of humor at the same time

Very well written, showing keen scientific insight and a great sense of humor at the same time. Highly readable and clear. I particularly enjoyed the book because it focuses on explaining evolution and on making the case for it, and does not digress into attacks on religion in general. As a believing Christian (a Mormon) who holds a PhD in science, fully accepts evolution and sees no real conflict between true science and true religion, I find this refreshing (the author is not particularly respectful towards scriptural-literalist young-earth creationists, but given that their position has no scientific basis, how could he be?) In addition to making a very strong case for evolutionary processes as the explanation of biological diversity and speciation, the author provides deep insight into the way evolution works, the explanatory and predictive power of evolutionary theory, and surprising examples of contemporary, on-going evolution.

Evolution is True and Bill Nye provides the details.

Bill Nye might not be the very best public orator in an unscripted debate, he still was able to win the one he had with Ken Ham of the Creation Science Museum. This book follows that debate and goes into further detail of the multi-million year old planet we live on. It explains in pages in greater detail the extraordinary world we live on and how we know it is not a young planet as creationists say but a thriving ball of life and processes in a greater universe even older than this world.

In everyone's best interest

I went to a Christian school and a Christian college. Though I would say most of my teachers were Creationists, I was taught real science and evolution was treated as the scientifically accepted theory even if my teachers disagreed with it. True, I have been fed a lot of falsehoods concerning evolution’s supposed shortcomings. I have seen the ridiculous video on the internet that tries to disprove evolution simply using a soda can and banana peel. I have had heard on numerous occasions Creationists misusing the laws of thermodynamics to negate evolution. Having said all that, whenever I hear an argument between a Creationist and Evolutionist, the theory of evolution always wins.

Why?

Because the theory of evolution is based on observable, scientific studies. If something is invalidated by new discoveries, the theory adapts. Scientists are humbled to the method.

Creationists, on the other hand, simply say an intelligent being put everything together and that’s the end of the debate. Any scientific discovery that fits their model (unlikely) is praised while any discovery that challenges their model (very likely) has to be refuted adamantly. There is simply no room for humility or open-mindedness in the Creationist community.

Bill Nye would agree with that. In his book, he simply lays out a simple guide to evolution. Though he does mention religion, I think he is very strategic in addressing Creationists, he does not broadly label Christians or any specific religion as being dumb or anti-intellectual.
I am sure an ardent Creationist would disagree with me.

So where does that put me? I am a Bible-believing Christian that believes in science. I believe God gave me a brain, I ought to use it. If our reasonable brains develop a theory of evolution, I don’t see the harm. Can you live in a world between creationism and evolution? Sure. It may be lonely but it’s not wrong. I can live in a space where questions are allowed. Can science explain everything, even the meaning of life? Can I accept the flood story when dinosaur fossils exist? Can I accept the grace of Jesus while still accepting the idea that organisms can evolve? Why is God so obsessed with beetles?

This is a great book. Perhaps when you read it, you will become enraged, but disagreements and proving each other wrong is not the point. In the last paragraph of the book, Bill Nye said it best, “I feel strongly that having a scientifically literate populace is in everyone’s best interest.”
