I'm stuck on it!

This book was everything I expected - comprehensive, accessible and well organised.
The book has some deep chemistry in it without being opaque. I am an inorganic chemist by training though haven't worked in the field for 15 years and I had absolutely no problems with it. This book is not for the general reader but I would suggest that any technical person who is not necessarily a chemist could get through it.
Remember - this is a handbook. As such it is designed to be a reference when faced with a problem like "What's the best glue for a metal to nylon bond?" I use it for amateur researce into glues and wood bonds. In that role, it is invaluable to me.

Great companion for the professional bonder

As a professional in the adhesion industry, this book is a valuable desktop companion. I use it when I am asked a question that is far afield of my normal scope of business. It contains a broad base of information on how various materials can be used, what they can bond, and the strengths and properties one can expect. However, it lacks the depth to make it useful in anyone's field of expertise. That is often not a problem, and I would recommend it to any professional in the industry, as it will help with data and additional sources of information when they are trying to find answers that are outside the normal scope of their experience and daily tasks.
As an aside, I would recommend that anyone purchasing this volume keep a copy of MIL-HDBK-691B nearby, as it covers many of the same topics and can provide a quick second opinion in adhesive/bonding selection and methods.

This marks the beginning of their somewhat surreal journey: the two teens are kidnapped by the "People of the Mist," a tribe possessing the power of turning invisible, and enter a mountain to discover the mythical city of El Dorado and the enigmatic "Beasts." While his mother is in Texas for chemotherapy treatment, Alex is spending the summer with his emotionally distant grandmother, who has been hired to find and write an article on the "Beast" that has been terrorizing the jungle. Partially funded by a suspicious businessman, the party includes a self-centered professor, several photographers, a government doctor and soldiers, a few native Indians, and a guide, C‚sar Santos, who brings along his daughter. Alex and Nadia become good friends, and together discover their own inner strengths through visions and shamanic journeys with the local tribe. The plot is as thick as its jungle setting. There are dangers such as the terrifying humanoid Beast that kills with huge claws, anacondas, natives with poison dart arrows, and an untrustworthy member of the expedition. The story is a struggle between good and evil, filled with surprises and adventure. Put this title on your "If You Liked Harry Potter" lists, and Allende may just find new fans. Though this is a rather hefty book, it is a real page-turner with hope for more, as Allende leaves readers with, "Until we meet again-."-Angela J. The Indian People of the Mist, who have lived in the region since the Stone Age, are now threatened by adventurers and entrepreneurs who want the land and its riches. There's some plot contrivance as Alex and a local girl each go on a vision quest to save the Indians; and some expedition members seem like caricatures--the buffoon anthropologist, the idealistic physician, the hard grandma. But the characters are also funny, angry, and needy, and they surprise even themselves. Caught by the young characters and their wild adventures, readers will race through this for the story, then stop and think about the issues of wildness, survival, and the nature of beasts and humans. Delightful trilogy, great to share with young people

This is the first of Isabel Allende's trilogy... for young people and adults. written in her great literary style it is full of vivid images, great travel information, and delightful characters ranging from an elderly anthropologist to her young teen grandson and young female from the Amazon.

I suppose somewhere in here might be the heavy religious tones of Narnia or Philip Pullman (if so I missed them). Beasts and its sequels are simply delightful imaginative tales... a bit like Hudson's,Green Mansions, seldom read today. this is nature fantasy, not technology stuff.
This would be a good family read choice: suitable for good readers of about a 6th grade reading level or a good parent read aloud book for poorer readers or a "you read a chapter, I read a chapter" bed time reading. It is a great introduction to a good writer with outstanding adults books. Once I read one I needed all three and bought all three for adults sons for Christmas. Great price at amazon buying all three together in paperback.

Adventure for young readers

I love this author and this work is special since it is the first of a trilogy for young readers. Two young people find themselves captives of an indigenous tribe near the Amazon River, and become the tribe's bridge to dealing with encroaching business concerns. Their presence in the area is with an expedition seeking a creature similar to the yeti.

Maybe something was lost in translation, parts were over simplified and story didn't flow in other parts. Realizing it was written as a 'young adult' novel makes most flaws easier to overlook. It did hold my attention for the most part but not sure I'll pick up the others in the trilogy.
