C G COOPER does it again! Corps Justice book #6 is well-written, Exciting, and a Fun Read. Enjoy!
By Michael E. Myers
C G COOPER has written his best novel in the Corps Justice series with book 6. As a new fan of Cooper's work, I downloaded the first book in this series for FREE, and have since then never looked back. Each new work of fiction gets better and better. Cal Stokes is a character who, although a figment of the author's vivid imagination, is believable, honorable, and someone who the reader can learn to love. His Marine Corps ethic of honor, courage, and commitment is contagious, so all other characters who are under this leader's charge are fun to read about, also extremely believable, and support the storyline.

Now that I've finished all six novels in the Corps Justice series, Lethal Misconduct is my favorite, and I highly recommend buying a copy. The team in this novel lives up to the Corps Justice motto to defend and protect. The discovery of a cancer cure and the threat of a biological weapon keeps the reader expertly entertained until the final page. The reader will want to hate the bad guys and love the SSI team as the plot thickens.

I love how Cooper ends each novel with the "hook" that makes the fan want to buy and read the next unwritten page. I cannot wait until the President of the United States authorizes Cal Stokes and his team into depths of Iraq. On a personal note, my old Marine Corps unit (1st Marines), took care of business in Iraq in 2003 in places like Fallujah and Anbar Province, only to see a group of savages exert their dominance now in 2014. The current state of affairs makes a Marine sick to his stomach. I can only hope that Cooper's fiction results in at least some victories over ISIS or ISIL in the next novel!!

To all my fellow Marines, Semper Fidelis! If you buy any book in the Corps Justice series, you will not be disappointed!

Hidden in the Shadows

A cure for cancer or a terrifying way to commit genocide?

Cal Stokes has left SSI and formed another group designed to enhance the security and freedom of the United States and others.....as needed and agreed upon by President Zimmer. This group is financed by billionaire Jonas Layton and based in Charlottesville. Neil and Dr. Higgins join the group as well as Cal's usual team, Daniel (snake eyes), Trent, and Gaucho with 11 of his operators.

When the team takes on some high ranking individuals in the U.S.Government, they are fighting with a small amount of time to prevent a genocide that is a thousand times worse than what Hitler attempted. This Book 6 of the Corps Justice Series by C. G. Cooper, is filled with suspense and thrills, and leaves us with a feeling there is more good in the world than evil, even though the fight against evil gets harder with each passing year.

Another CorpsJustice, riveting, action novel. You will enjoy it to the end!!!
By pumpkinwitch
I just finished reading ‘Lethal Misconduct’, another fast-moving, intricately threaded, ‘Corps Justice’ book, that keeps you on edge, right to the end. This is a book that you will enjoy, and probably not be able to put down. You won’t be bored, and you will want to read it again.

The author is a master at weaving the threads of a story, yet keeping them straight; interconnecting them, and managing to put an unexpected finish on each thread.

I can usually second guess about 95% of the mysteries and thrillers I read, but, (barring the knowledge that things will work out successfully) the Corps Justice books keep things open to guesswork, through to the end.

I hate long drawn out descriptions and lectures or explanations that are far longer than needed. These books certainly do not come under either of these categories.

I have read all of the Corps Justice books, and several, more than once. Many books, I don't read again, because they are simplistic enough, that I almost know the plot by heart. These are so intricately planned and written, that when I read them again, I am always finding interesting parts that add to the book's interest.

Read this book. You won’t regret it.

A General Theory of Love, by Thomas Lewis, Richard Lannon, Fari Amini

Drawing on new scientific discoveries and seventy years of collective clinical experience, three psychiatrists unravel life's most elemental mystery: the nature of love.

A primordial area of the brain, far older than reason or thinking, creates both the capacity and the need for emotional intimacy that all humans share. A General Theory of Love describes the workings of this ancient, pivotal urge and reveals that our nervous systems are not self-contained. Instead, our brains link with those of the people close to us, in a silent rhythm that makes up the very life force of the body. These wordless and powerful ties determine our moods, stabilize and maintain our health and well-being, and change the structure of our brains. In consequence, who we are and who we become depend, in great part, on whom we love.

A General Theory of Love applies these and other extraordinary insights to some of the most crucial issues we face in our lives. Its authors explain how relationships function and where love goes wrong, how parents shape a child's developing self, how psychotherapy really works, what curbs and what fosters violent aggression in our children, and how modern society regularly courts disaster by flouting emotional laws it does not yet recognize.

A work of rare originality, passion, and eloquence, A General Theory of Love will forever change the way you think about human intimacy.

Amazon.com Review
Poor, poor science--it gets blamed for everything. While it might be true that some of our alienation and unhappiness stem from a too-rational misunderstanding of emotion, it's also true that science is its own remedy. A General Theory of Love, by San Francisco psychiatrists Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini, and Richard Lannon, is a powerfully humanistic look at the natural history of our deepest feelings, and why a simple hug is often more important than a portfolio full of stock options. Their grasp of neural science is topnotch, but the book is more about humans as social animals and how we relate to others--for once, the brain plays second fiddle to the heart.

Though some of their social analysis is less than fully thought out--surely e-mail isn't a truly unique form of communication, as they suggest--the work as a whole is strong and merits attention. Science, it turns out, does have much to say about our messy feelings and relationships. While much of it could be filed under "common sense," it's nice to know that common sense is replicable. Hard-science types will probably be exasperated with the constant shifts between data and appeals to emotional truths, but the rest of us will see in A General Theory of Love a new synthesis of research and poetry. --Rob Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
The Beatles may have sounded naive when they assured us that "all you need is love," but they may not have been far off the mark. New research in brain function has proven that love is a human necessity; its absence damages not only individuals, but our whole society. In this stimulating work, psychiatrists Lewis, Amini and Lannon explain how and why our brains have evolved to require consistent bonding and nurturing. They contend that close emotional connections actually change neural patterns in those who engage in them, affecting our sense of self and making empathy and socialization possible. Indeed, the authors insist, "in some important ways, people cannot be stable on their own." Yet American society is structured to frustrate emotional health, they contend: self-sufficiency and materialistic goals are seen as great virtues, while emotional dependence is considered a weakness. Because our culture does not sufficiently value interpersonal relationships, we are plagued by anxiety and depression, narcissism and superficiality, which can lead to violence and self-destructive behaviors. It is futile to try to think our way out of such behaviors, the authors believe, because emotions are not within the intellect's domain. What is needed is healthy bonding from infancy; when this does not occur, the therapist must model it. The authors' utopian vision of emotional health may strike some as vague or conservative to a fault, and the clarity of their thesis is marred by indirect and precious writing. Yet their claim that "what we do inside relationships matters more than any other aspect of human life" is a powerful one. Agent, Carol Mann. 9-city author tour.

From Library Journal
A traditional subject of poetry and pop psychology is treated here as a scientific construct. Three psychiatry professors (Univ. of California, San Francisco) cover an impressive vista of research and clinical insights from Freud to contemporary neuroscience. They focus on the limbic brain as the source and conduit of emotions like love. The link between the development of the limbic brain and the development of personality are described here in confident prose. Society is castigated for failing to encourage full-time parenting and other policies that support limbic development and the human need for love. Although the authors sometimes substitute metaphor for empirical support and easily dismiss other perspectives, the book is well written and provides a credible introduction to the neuroscience of emotions. Recommended for academic and larger public libraries.

Book Review: A General Theory of Love
Kirk Honda

In their book A General Theory of Love (2000), Thomas Lewis, Fari Amini and Richard Lannon, psychiatry professors at the University of California, San Francisco, examined the phenomenon of love and attachment by synthesizing the previously separate fields of cognitive psychology, art, neuroscience, culture, and evolutionary biology. The style of the book lies within a happy medium between stagnant scientific journals and accessible self-help books. The book effortlessly sways back and forth from romantic sentiment to cutting-edge scientific research. In this way, this book appeals to academics and non-academics alike, and its popularity is evidenced by it having been translated into Spanish, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Korean, Latvian, Croatian, and Farsi.

The Main Points

The four main points of the book are: 1) our brains are affected by those closest to us, particularly during childhood; 2) within intimate relationships, our limbic systems synchronize with one another; 3) our brains can be changed for the better through long-term therapy; and 4) American society often frustrates our efforts to satisfy our biological need for connection.

Evolutionary Biology

The authors begin by educating us in biological fundamentals, explaining the triune brain (reptilian with its basic functions, limbic with its emotional function, and neocortical with its facility to reason) and explaining how evolution led to our illogically-structured brain. As ancestor animals adapted to their environment, each evolutionary solution was solved by modifying already-established structures, including the nervous system. Thus, over the eons, evolution's twists and turns led to a quirkily designed brain. Structures of the brain evolved incrementally and without and end goal (p. 21).

Early Relationships

The authors take us further down the road toward love by describing the evolved functions of the brain structures involved in early relationships. Throughout the ages, instincts have evolved. For example, infants have an instinctual attraction to faces and a pre-programmed understanding of facial expressions (p. 61). This multitude of inborn brain structures encourages survival by fostering a bond between parent and child, so the child may be protected and taught by the parent. Along these lines, research has found that a lack of nurturing love will damage the human brain forever (p. 89). Grim evidence of this can be found within findings that extreme emotional deprivation can even cause infant death (p. 87). Human children are pre-designed for attachment and they need it for biological and practical survival.

Neurons and Neurotransmitters

The authors continue by explaining that the brain is a network of neurons. Through chemistry (neurotransmitters), neurons send signals to each other. By altering the chemistry in the brain, one can alter the functioning of the mind. Caffeine can cause alertness, SSRI's can alleviate depression, Ritalin can increase focus, and so on. In theory, all aspects of the mind are modulated by chemistry, including love.

The authors briefly discuss the neurotransmitters involved in experiences of love. They point out that current biological investigations of love focus on three crucial chemicals: serotonin, opiates, and oxytocin (p. 92). For instance, oxytocin levels have been found to surge in human mothers around birth which stimulates labor and also facilitates bonding between mother and neonate. Also, oxytocin gushes at puberty which motivates crushes and romantic love (p. 97).

Early animals evolved a mechanism to detect bodily damage: the neurotransmitters involved in the sensation of pain. And since the body needs a way to restore balance, opiates evolved to assuage that pain. When mammals evolved the limbic brain to facilitate the dependence on each other for survival, evolution recruited this primitive pain/opiate system to motivate mammalian social behavior. This is why relationships are both pleasurable and agonizing. For example, most people say that nothing is more painful that losing a loved one (p. 95).

Cutting. As a particularly poignant application of this theory, the authors attempt to explain cutting behaviors. Life is rife with tiny and not-so-tiny rejections - a disagreement, an apathetic look, a break-up. These social experiences produce emotional pain, which in some ways is indistinguishable from physical pain. When a teen cuts her skin, pain fibers send pain signals to her brain. Eventually, the brain releases pain's counterweight: the soothing, numbing opiates. In effect, she caused a physical pain to trick her nervous system into eventually numbing both her physical pain and her emotional pain (p. 96).

Limbic Attractors

The authors dedicate a significant portion of the book to describing research in cognitive psychology that demonstrates that much of our motivations, memories, and processing occurs outside of our awareness or control. With this empirical foundation, the authors assert that the limbic brain contains emotional Attractors, encoded early in life (p. 140). These Attractors compel bias when viewing emotions and relationships. They influence our experience of romantic relationships. Since these templates were established within the mostly-unconscious limbic brain, these Attractors are nearly impossible to modulate by the conscious mind (p. 142).

Parenting and the Development of Self

In the first few years of life, the over-abundant neural pathways are whittled down to a select set of frequently-used circuits. Through repeated experience with caregivers, the brain becomes imprinted with what love feels like to the child. This collection of experiences and their neural consequences tell the child what relationships are, how they function, what to anticipate, and how to conduct them. If parents love children healthily, wherein mistakes are forgiven, children's needs are paramount, and hurts are soothed, then that is how the children will feel about themselves and relate others later in life (p. 160).

Romance

The target audience of the book seems to be people who have had a troubled romantic life in that the authors are often attempting to explain why so many of us have dysfunctional relationship patterns.

Early experiences establish particular neural pathways that set the stage of adult romantic relationships and how they feel to us. If a child is not given a steady limbic resonance, that child will have difficulty empathizing with others. Whereas if a child experiences a steady limbic connection, that child will develop the ability to empathize, to look inside someone else, and to respond accordingly. And when two healthy limbic systems join, limbic attunement allows these lovers to regulate each other's emotions, neurophysiology, hormonal status, immune system, and other functions (p. 207).

Psychotherapy

The authors go on to assert that the human limbic system is stabilized through relatedness. In the short-term, when people are hurting and out of balance, they turn to others for support - this returns them to limbic homeostasis (p. 170). In the long-term, people can permanently fine tune their limbic systems through prolonged contact with a caring, wise, responsive person who, over time, can bolster their healthy neural networks that will lead to increased self-soothing and relationship satisfaction. Many people leave therapy sessions (regardless of the theoretical orientation of the therapist) feeling calmer, stronger, safer and often they don't know why (p. 171). This is the result of limbic resonance, which is outside of conscious awareness.

When a client comes in to therapy suffering from unfulfilling relationships or low self-esteem, the therapist, through long-term limbic attendance, alters the microanatomy of the client's brain. Long-term, relationship-oriented psychotherapy strengthens or weakens particular neural pathways (p. 176). Short-term self-help solutions are ineffective because they propose that a strong-willed client should be able to change how they think and feel. But the psychophysiology of emotional life cannot be changed so easily. It took a limbic connection to create the problem and it will take a lived limbic connection to repair it (p. 177).

Society

The authors make a compelling argument that American individualism, materialism and capitalism are frustrating our emotional and physical health. Americans are encouraged to achieve and not to attach (p. 206). For example, we disparage "needy" people, but we glorify self-made individuals. Since our culture promotes self-sufficiency which leads to isolation, we suffer needlessly from anxiety, depression, narcissism and other such maladies of the 21st century. Therefore the authors advise that we should not only privilege our cortex/cognitive mind, but we should also pay attention to our limbic/emotional selves (p. 229). To this end, the authors also advise that couples should spend time together if they want to maintain their bond.

Mainstream medicine has responded to external and internal economic pressures by paying less attention to patients' limbic system. The authors claim American patients have deserted mainstream medicine for the warm embrace of practitioners who attend to patients' limbic system: massage therapists, chiropractors, acupuncturists, and a host of others (p. 222). They recommend mainstream medicine change their systems and practices to the way things were before, when kindly doctors attended to the patients' limbic systems.

Critique

The authors wisely admit that even though love emanates from the physical brain and science provides a valuable tool for exploring the brain, human beings come equipped with an older means of discerning the nature of emotion: subjectivity (p. 12). This is a welcomed admission for those readers who are skeptical of the broad and reductionistic claims often made within science today.

Brief Therapy. The authors disparage brief therapy as a universally unfortunate development since it denies clients' need for long-term limbic attendance. As a relational therapist, I agree with the authors' assertion that some therapeutic goals are best met through an ongoing attuned therapeutic relationship. In support of this, there is a growing body of empirical evidence supporting the efficacy of long-term, psychodynamic therapy (Town et al., 2012). However, many of my clients also come to therapy for issues that are not suited for long-term therapies. Some clients' goals are best met in short-term therapy. Furthermore, brief therapies have a much larger body of evidence supporting their efficacy. As one of many examples, a 2012 meta-analysis of 15 randomized controlled trials found brief psychotherapies to be more efficacious than control (Nieuwsma, Trivedi, Mcduffie, Kronish, Benjamin, & Williams, 2012).

No Credit Given. Much of the book is common wisdom: love feels good, childhood experiences affect adult relationships, parents should pay attention to children's needs, society pressures us to move too fast for our own good, etc. These are good messages, and the authors provide an inspiring new angle on these old wisdoms. However, since the authors do not credit the giants upon which they stand, many readers might attribute these wisdoms to the authors themselves. It is common for self-help authors to write as if they were the first to put forth their ideas, but academic psychiatrists should know better. One might defend the authors by pointing out that this book is meant for the lay audience who don't care about citations. However, these are adept writers who could have woven in a few references to satisfy the academic audience.

The title of book could have been The Recent Biological Science that Supports the Long-Established Bowlby/Ainsworth Attachment Theory. But I suppose that title would have spoiled the book's marketing efforts. Attachment theory was mentioned only briefly in the book. The authors did not credit Bowlby, Ainsworth, and the many other theorists who had similar if not identical claims - this is like writing a book about gravity and not mentioning Newton.

Myths and Truths. As an example, after a somewhat long, circuitous discussion regarding cognitive research findings, the authors arrive at one of their main concepts: Limbic Attractors, or biases developed early in life that affect one's view of adult relationships. During this discussion, the authors mention that Freud's concept of transference is similar to their concept of Limbic Attractors. This exhibits responsible writing: give credit where credit is due. However, in the next paragraph, they write "Science has a way of supplanting myths with no less fantastic truths: transference exists because the brain remembers with neurons" (p. 141). The key words are "myths" and "truths." Transference is a myth while Attractors is a truth.

Limbic Resonance. (I am not a biologist, so my opinion on the following matter should be taken with a grain salt.) Throughout the book, the authors claim that our limbic brains synchronize, resonate, regulate, and revise. However, in my humble opinion, they did not provide any direct empirical evidence of this claim. Perhaps they merely omitted the research for the sake of readability. Or perhaps such supporting evidence does not exist. Their claims make intuitive sense, but without biological evidence, the authors are merely repackaging long-established psychological philosophy within biological terminology.

Perhaps the authors did not want to bore the lay audience with research and jargon. Or perhaps the authors wanted to make it seem as though they were truly inventing a new General Theory of Love. Rather than speculating, I wrote the authors and asked them. They have yet to reply.

Conclusion

This book added to my understanding of attachment. It has illuminated connections I had not seen previously. For example, I have worked with many clients who cut. The authors' explanation of the involved neurochemistry (i.e., opiates) was the missing puzzle piece in my formulation of self-abuse.

Also, this book helped me to understand the biological effects of love and the biological effects of a lack of love. The authors have bolstered and inspired my efforts to foster more love in the world. After reading this book, I found myself focusing more attention on my clients' "limbic" selves. Are they getting enough love in their lives? Could they give more love to others? I have always recommended cuddle time for couples but now I can make connections between cuddling and their brain chemistry, which in turn affects other areas in the lives (e.g., sleep quality, mood, immune system), which in turn affects their cuddle time, creating a recursive cycle.

A reviewer on Amazon.com wrote (retrieved on 2/8/13): "This book was an eye-opening experience for me. Since my early teens, I've established a pattern of being in relationships that start out on a high and then eventually deteriorate and fail. I've never understood why I involve myself-a successful, intelligent, generally happy person-with people who leave me dissatisfied, feeling worthless, and convinced that I should just give up and relegate myself to a lonely Siberian outpost. A General Theory of Love enlightened me. Not in some namby-pamby, self-help, touchy-feely kind of way-but by explaining the science of brain development and the associated outcomes in our personal lives using accessible, easy to understand language that borders on lyric prose. Thank you Dr. Lewis for introducing me to myself!"

There are many more reviews like this one. Regardless of the critique, this book has helped people to understand themselves and to forgive themselves for their relationship foibles. I suppose that benefit far outweighs any shortcoming.

Fascinating read, boring title, could have offered more solutions
By Mgidd
Excellent description of the limbic system and its development in mammals. Recounts much of the research and weaves it together very skillfully. I only gave it 4 stars because the only solution it gave for having inadequate parenting/dysfunctional attachment in childhood was psychotherapy. Psychotherapy can change brain structure but it takes years of work for that to occur. They also ended the book rather abruptly and it seemed almost unfinished somehow. Nevertheless, this book gives the best, most succinct explanation yet for why adults get into the same dysfunctional relationships again and again. If this book was combined with research into other more efficient therapies for addressing a poorly programmed limbic system, such as psychedelics, it would have been much more complete.

A good theoretical framework for discussion of emotion and logic
By W. Gunn
The author seeks to provide a theoretical framework for the oft-discussed relationship between emotion and rationality, heart and head, elephant and rider. In Lewis's terminology, it's the limbic system and the neocortex. What I found useful was the discussion of the role of limbic resonance and relatedness. In these terms, love is resonance and a feeling of relatedness, which provides a reciprocal regulation of emotion. Though there's nary a reference to the primary literature to be found, and I suspect that some of the evolutionary explanations are given a little too much play, the book introduces a useful vocabulary for talking about the interplay between logic and emotion. I might not buy that limbic ignorance and cold parenting is behind every ill that plagues society, but a greater awareness of the role that intuition, instinct, and emotion play in our lives certainly can't hurt.

Loved it BUT....
By DP
I first have to say that this writer is talented. The reason for only three stars? I will explain:
What I liked: Smart writing, thought provoking, some likable characters...
What I didn't like: The main character Sloan. First, she is a 17-year old, but her inner thoughts sound much older - as is the case with a lot of YA books these days - supposedly to make us thing they are much smarter, which doesn't equal wiser. Not to give too much away, Sloan is a young girl who is a victim of a terrible act, and plays that card (the "poor me" card) to the end by victimizing ALL the people around her. I get she's angry, but being mean and self-destructing is not the answer. And the author should know better! But I get it - the angst is needed, just wish it would have ended earlier, so we could see a change that only happened in the last chapter of the book! By that time, I really disliked Sloan, and also felt cheated by the fact that, predictably, her change came about only after she suffers another loss!
There is another character in the book (an enemy of Sloan's) who voices exactly what I'd been thinking the whole time! Again, just wish it happened earlier in the book, thus giving our main character the chance to grow, change, realize, etc...
I hope Ms. Francis writes more books - I will definitely read them - as far as this one goes, one time is enough!

Tear Jerker!
By Jasmine Q. Le
This story is such a tear jerker. I'm a huge Blakney Francis fan, and it's such a shame that she only has two books. Both of them are SO worth the money, though.

Note: keep some tissues on hand.

RIVETING SEQUEL
By Kathi
This sequel to The Other Sister is so outstanding! It fills in so many blanks and questions. It revels so much about each individual character and the two as a couple, especially Will. There was so much I did not anticipate or see coming. It also helped to fill in some blanks about the "good sister". Leanne Davis is a truly gifted author. She is an outstanding story teller who excels at character development to the extent that you feel you really know the principal characters, because they are so real and alive. The story has so many twists and turns, I could not stop reading until I had finished the book. It was rivieting! Treat yourself and read the entire Sister series!

The Years Between ( Sister Series 1.5 )
By Eva
I loved this from book 1, have read every one of them. So much emotion and love that it carries you through their problems of saving their lives and the love so somewhere down the road they can be happy and normal. It was fantastic getting the in between time with Jessie and Will, love these characters, their strong, devoted, resilient and loving. Jessie has endured so much trauma in her life, and for her to come so far and be the way she is now is a testament to how much strength she has. I applaud you Leanne for capturing so much emotion, tragedy, hope, and love in this series, Its awesome!!!! Have read other books by Leanne and have not been disappointed, highly recommend her work to anyone that wants a interesting, heartbreaking, intriguing, romantic, exciting, journey.

Wonderful Read!
By samanthagirl
Wow! It does not get better than this! I have just finished reading Will and Jessie's story and find myself bursting with emotion. I loved them both in The Other Sister and to read of their struggles in depth was wonderful. My heart ached for Will who appears so strong and yet when he showed the emotional side of him made me love him even more. Jessie is so strong and yet does not realise this and to see her and Will as they make their way through their marriage and try to become a "normal" couple makes a great story. There were also parts of their struggle I did not see coming and these added to my enjoyment of this book. Once again Leanne Davis has demonstrated what a brilliant and talented author she is. Please read this book you will love it.

What are the real risks posed by a volcanic eruption near a city - what is fact and what is myth? How have volcanic eruptions affected cities in the past, and how can we learn from these events? Why do communities continue to develop in such locations, despite the obvious threat? In this fascinating book, Grant Heiken explores global examples of cities at risk from volcanoes, from Italy, the US, Mexico, Ecuador, The Philippines, Japan and New Zealand, providing historical and contemporary eruption case studies to illustrate volcanic hazards, and cities' efforts to respond to them, both good and poor. He shows that truly successful volcanic hazard mitigation cannot be accomplished without collaboration between experts in geology and natural hazards, public health, medicine, city and infrastructure planning, and civil protection. This is a topical and engaging read for anyone interested in the history and future activity of these dangerous neighbors.

Review
"Dangerous Neighbors: Volcanoes and Cities is a timely and authoritative wake-up call for over 60 global cities which Grant Heiken has identified within range of the world's most dangerous active volcanoes. Devising effective disaster reduction measures for the wide range of volcanic hazards at these cities presents one of the greatest environmental challenges of our times."
Peter J. Baxter, University of Cambridge, former Consultant Physician in Occupational and Environmental Medicine, and government and WHO health adviser

"Since the beginning of the human race, volcanoes have fascinated us, giving inspiration to legends and beliefs, but they also pose serious threats to populations near and far. The examples included in this book have been carefully chosen to fully cover the wide spectrum of possible volcanic scenarios and to illustrate the different problems modern societies face in protecting themselves against volcanoes. Accessible to any interested readers, Heiken's writing does not lack scientific rigour: this excellent book has the potential to rapidly become a bestseller among all those who work with and love volcanoes."
Joan Mart, Institute of Earth Sciences 'Jaume Almera', CSIC, Barcelona; Secretary General, IAVCEI; and Editor-in-Chief, Journal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research

"In this excellent book, Heiken places the dangers and disaster potential of populated volcanoes within a varied context of local culture, geologic research, public planning and politics. Like great earthquakes, the world's great volcanoes are ticking time-bombs. This book is a must-read for anyone in the business of hazard forecasting, planning and mitigation in cities located near volcanoes."
Erik Hauri, Carnegie Institution of Washington

"Noted volcanologist Grant Heiken blends historical and archaeological evidence of past urban-volcanic interactions, and shows how current cultural practices and demographic trends shape how people can live with the threat of volcanic activity. This engaging and well-written book will be of interest to a variety of audiences from students with interests in volcano science, cultural anthropology, sustainability, and urban planning, to the general public wanting to learn more about how volcanoes affect our urban environment."
Thomas Casadevall, Scientist Emeritus, US Geological Survey

"Not only is this a great book, but it would serve as a wonderful basis for a TV series of science documentaries. Heiken has more than 40 years' experience in studying volcanic hazards, and here he has chosen to write in detail about a dozen cities around the globe with histories of nearby volcanism and threat of future disaster."
W. Dimmick, Central Connecticut State University

"... provides an integrated picture of how volcanic eruptions have affected cities in the past, and the lessons we can learn from these events to prevent death, disruption of life, and loss of property in the future. ... The text is lively and the book is written in conversational style. It is also clear that the author has personally visited the sites discussed, and his affection for these settings comes through in his writing. The book is very accessible to the general reader, even if one has little scientific background. Terminology is explained and illustrated with clear examples."
Risa Palm, AAG Review of Books

"Grant Heiken, a world-renowned volcanologist, has written a book based on his long history investigating volcanic hazards that is absolutely riveting. Eight of the ten chapters focus on the interplay between major metropolises and destructive volcanoes ... It deals at length with the quandary posed over how to educate the populous and government officials at all levels. Heiken also postulates how scientists can provide potential risk and hazard assessments in a manner that can be understood by the public ... The book provides many great and in places dramatic photographs along with a chart listing large city populations and the last significant eruption by a nearby volcano. These are truly eye opening images. In addition, the frontispiece of the book contains definitions and descriptions of many volcanic phenomena central to understanding the book."
Florie Caporuscio, American Mineralogist

About the Author
Grant Heiken is an expert in volcanology and interdisciplinary urban studies, having investigated volcanic regions on four continents and the Moon and co-written or edited 10 books, including Volcanoes: Crucibles of Change (1997). He holds a PhD in geology and has worked for NASA during the Apollo program as a researcher and a geology instructor for astronauts. For many years he worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory on geothermal development, many aspects of volcanology from hazard analysis to scientific drilling, and integrated urban science. He was President of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior from 1995 to 1999, and now works as a freelance writer.

Chimboraz, Cotopaxi, Popocatepetl
By Julia A. Andrews
As a boy, too many years ago to contemplate, Masefield's poem with refrain consisting of the names of three South American volcanoes, made an indelible impression on me. Hence, I think my interest in volcanoes, although I must emphasize, a dilettante's interest and not that of a scholar. Overall, I found the descriptions of the volcanoes and related geology, interesting but not fascinating. The book has the air of a handy textbook, and, to be critical, contains a great deal of repetitive information. For those with an interest in the subject it will prove a passable read. It is unlikely to convert others however.

Did you ever really outgrow volcanoes?
By Brian Connors
I was four when Mount St Helens erased a huge chunk of Cascadian wilderness, and the pictures from NatGeo a year or so later were some of the most memorable pictures any nerdy kid of my generation would ever see - blasted film from a volcanologist's buried camera, before and after pictures of once-thriving Spirit Lake (and the rather weird story of local eccentric Harry R. Truman, who chose to die in his lodge rather than leave), and the image of Ash-cloud lightning over Yakima, WA (followed by someone dumping ash off the side of a building's roof). Luckily, St Helens was out in the wilderness; urban ashfall was a relatively minor consequence. This book talks about what happens in places like Naples, where thousands of people are packed in around active volcanoes.

The book is quite an interesting read, with lots of maps and photos; in fact, it's in some ways a geological travelogue. It visits a lot of the more famous urban volcanoes, including Vesuvius, Rainier, Pinatubo, Montserrat, and Popocatepetl, and in each case talks about the effects on the area of past eruptions and how a current incident would be managed (or even if it could be, in the case of the organized chaos of Naples). It's a fast but intensely informative read, although if you live near some of these mountains it might cause you a few sleepless nights. It's certainly yet another reminder of the risks we take in a world that's a lot bigger than we are. (It is also the perfect gift for high school geology buffs, world travelers, and certain unspecified governors of Louisiana.)

Easy Intro to Volcanic Hazards
By Mohe
Grant Heiken, a noted volcanologist, has written a breezy and not unengaging Volcanic Hazards intro textbook, while this book will be of minimal interest to geologists it would prove very useful as a quick and light introduction for local government officials and those involved with urban planning.

The book is broken down into a series of brief a none too technical case studies of various cities and related volcanic hazards. Naples, Mexico City-Puebla, Manila, Kyushu, Auckland, the US Pacific Northwest, and Montserrat, are discussed along with a very minimalist and impressionistic description of Santorini. The examples are well chosen, each highlighting various types of volcanic hazards. The discussions are brief enough not to bore the reader, and mainly focus, unsurprisingly considering the author, on volcanic ash and related mudflows. The book is heavily directed at urban officials and those involved in emergency services and brings up issues of ash removal and popular reaction to volcanic events.

It is a very quick and pleasant read.

As a geologist it was hard for me to review this book, very little in it was new to me, but I honestly did not feel it left much out. The main issue was that many of the b&w illustrations seemed poorly selected, and maps were both badly designed and did not relate to the text. This is in my opinion a serious problem for a book of this type and was the reason for my 4 star review.

Dios usa lapiz labial: God Wears Lipstick (Spanish Edition), by Karen Berg

For thousands of years, women were banned from studying the spiritual tradition of Kabbalah. Karen Berg changed that. As the first female Kabbalist, she opened its doors to all who want to understand its wisdom. In Dios usa lapiz labial, she shares that wisdom exclusively with women (and with men who want to better understand women), revealing that women hold a special place in the universe and enjoy a spiritual advantage over men. With a special emphasis on how Kabbalah can enhance relationships, Berg covers topics such as finding a soul mate; the sacred power of sex; and the importance of friendship, sharing, forgiveness, and tolerance. Structured around ancient Kabbalistic tools, the book shows women how to reconnect with God and find new purpose and joy.
