Essential Book For All Visual Basic Programmers

This book is *the* book for all Visual Basic programmers. Essentially it is a refrence and partial tutorial on the WIN32 API or Applications Programmers Interface, the bones of the Windows OS. This book is essential to every Visual Basic programmer in that it teaches about the API and its interfaces and shows you how to use them to your advantage. This book does what it says and does it well. It can be used with most modern versions of Visual Basic but is updated for the VB6 version of Visual Basic. It is well laid out and the examples are fairly easy to follow. Great book and should be made a mandatory purchase for every Visual Basic programemr.

Essential book for all VB Programmers!

Personally I think this book should be on every desk of every Visual Basic programmer. I think that it is laid out well and the examples in the book are easy to follow. This is not a book that you read before bed or that will keep you up at night with the plot twists but it does what it says. Essentially this is a refrence book on the applications programmers interface which is the backbone of the Windows OS. This is an updated version of the book meant for VB6 users but it could be used by older versions of the lanquage. Essentially it is *the* book to have if you are serious about VB6 programming.

A must have for the serious VB Programmer

I would not think of doing without Dan's API guide.
I started Windows in 1991 with C and SDK. In those days you had to learn the API to get your work done. But, after VB 3.0, I got completely away from C and intimate knowledge of the API. Dan's book de-mystifies the Win32 API.
New and intermediate VB programmers will find his explanations easy to follow. Dan tells you why things work the way they do and warns about any pitfalls using VB for API calls. (There are not many problems, but they do exist.)
I you have not got this book and you are serious about VB, I recommend you get it.

Needs a major update

I agree that this book is an excellent reference book, but what I am truly disappointed about this book is the fact that this needs a major update. The list of suppliers of urinalysis products, for example, needs to be updated to reflect the current condition. It contains products and companies which are no longer available. Creatinine is a major component of urinalysis today for liver/kidney screening, but it is not even mentioned. The urinalysis field has progressed over the years, and this book should mention a few automated automated microscopic and flow cytometory instruments to benefit readers.

About the Author
Jens M�ller was born in Koblenz, Germany in 1982 and studied graphic design in D�sseldorf. Recipient of numerous national and international design awards, M�ller is Creative Director of optik design studio in D�sseldorf, and editor of the A5 book series on graphic design history. He teaches graphic design history and editorial design as a visiting lecturer at the Peter Behrens School of Arts, University of Applied Sciences D�sseldorf.

R. Roger Remington is Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design at the Vignelli Center for Design Studies, Rochester Institute of Technology, New York. He has lectured and written extensively on the history of graphic design, including Nine Pioneers in American Graphic Design and Design and Science: The Life and Work of Will Burtin and has been reocgnized by the RIT Eisenhart Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Trustees Lifetime Achievement Award for Scholarship in Graphic Design.

This book is absolutely incredible. There are older books out there I've wanted that cost $150+ that cover modernistic logos - but so glad I found this book. For $60 this book is a no brainer for any logo designer. Thousands and thousands of fantastic timeless forms for inspiration.

Archival, survey, planning and design materials generated during the recovery of the city center and its conservation area reveal how urban design policies formulated in the 1920s and 1930s (the transition period between tradition and early modernity) were finally brought to their full potential. We see how international experience in urban and architectural conservation was adapted to local materials and know-how. The need to modernize infrastructure and upgrade public spaces was reconciled with the equally present need to preserve the cultural identity of place through the reuse of conserved structures, made possible due to the adoption of specific stone masonry repair techniques. Proceeding according to a pre-approved but flexible master plan, the recovery of the Beirut city center is a major postwar reconstruction and urban regeneration project.

In the 1980s, "downtown Beirut" became synonymous with bombed-out urban devastation, reflecting the destruction wrought by the Lebanese civil war on its capital. However, under a determined and strictly implemented restoration plan, Beirut's Foch-Allenby and Etoile areas, originally "destined to be the showcase of France in the Levant," have re-emerged as vibrant and active urban centers, with some resumption of Beirut's complicated emotional heritage as a major Mediterranean port. This impressive civic rebirth, as recorded by scholar Saliba (Beirut: 1920–1940) in this dense 9.5"�13" architectural history, was undertaken by the Soldiere company, according to strict historical, archeological and architectural preservationist standards. Despite the overly dry, jargonish and repetitive text ("interface" is one word that the reader will hope to never see again), the book is filled with 313 color and 86 b&w photographs and architectural survey. In addition, transparent overlays document the various archeological strata and cultural/historical sites of Beirut. An overwhelming number of streets and buildings gutted by bombs, and recorded in harrowing yet strangely beautiful "before" photographs, have been reconstructed exactly. The lines of the Foch-Allenby and Etoile's elegant buildings, with French architectural influences married to traditional structures such as the "riwaq," trace Lebanon's complex history.

LOVED IT! Transformed my thinking despite years of messages from external sources ...

LOVED IT!

As the grandchild of a self made millionaire who repeated all my life and that of my mother (his daughter) - "watch your pennies and your dollars will take care of themselves" ... his frugal, bordering on cheap, behavior made him wealthy but what he said vs what he did in his own finances were total opposites. Before he passed away, we had an important conversation wherein he revealed he felt he had been a failure. In fact, he had co-founded a bank, been a key investor in other very successful ventures (start ups in their day) including modest real estate, investments and substantial stock in other companies and was a tremendous philanthropist. He built a very successful company and sold it at 60 while he preached to the family to be anything but self-employed which, as many know, the most common path to wealth and financial freedom.

That is why, when I found this book after reading a story distilled from Steve's chapters in Business Insider, I immediately bought the Kindle version. I could not be more THRILLED!!!

After having so much financial heresy thoughout my life from family, institutions, employers, educators, media even religious leaders - finding Steve's book with his wisely written chapters was a true God send and incredibly transformative.

I have read many other worthy books - but this one - comparing side by side what the "middle class 'masses' " believe vs the "world class" - has truly been one of the best investments I have ever made. EVER!

Unfortunately for me - I bought it several months ago and read it bit by bit - finally finishing the last 60 chapters in a matter of days. When beginning to read the chapters it took me a while to adapt my thinking and do the suggested exercises at the end of each chapter. Since I was beginning to change my thinking and internal "chatter" i.e. "keep you head down and do your job" to world class thinking - the process took some time plus lots & lots of personal journal entries. It was indeed time well spent!

During the process I discovered more about myself that I didn't realize and am very thankful for this book and the wisdom and insight Steve shares. I am moving in a much more positive direction and am excited about the future again.

As a long time small business owner - I bucked the family trend - my grandfather knew about it before he died and was proud of me. That said, through many upheavals and losses in my life, I am at a new chapter personally and professionally and now get up every day - despite the challenges - looking forward to new opportunities. I truly believe my Best Days are out in front of me ... not as a Pollyanna - but as a more informed adult, ready to tackle the hard issues and overcome my past "stinkin' thinkin' " as some call it.

Steve - thank you for this book. I look forward to your next one and, in the future if you update this one, I will buy it too.

Good but with lots of repetition

What I liked:
* Easy read; each chapter was only a couple of pages long
* Good insight as to how the wealthy think

What I didn't like:
* Like other "research-derived" books I've read (e.g. The Millionaire Next Door), the main points and take-aways from the book could easily be summarized in a dozen or two bullet points; instead the same points are made over again and over again across hundreds of pages (otherwise there'd be no book to sell).
* Lots of generalities with few specifics or case studies

On the balance, I thought it was good enough to earn a four star rating.

Single biggest take-away:
The average person operates from a position of scarcity and fear while the "world-class" operates from a position of optimism and abundance; this fundamental difference in world views drives many other behaviors that end up separating the haves from the have-nots.

How Rich People Think by Steve Siebold covers information from the multiple interviews that the author had with millionaires. The 208 pages contrast middle class thinking with what the author terms world class (millionaire viewpoints). However, one must have an open mind because he includes controversial details such as: Middle Class teaches their kids to be happy with what they have while the world class (the wealthy men and women) teaches their kids how to go for their dreams (pages 188-189). Additionally, I reluctantly admit that I now fully understand exactly what the author means when he says that the middle class only focuses on money when they need it while the world class focuses on money all the time (pages 204-205). He also generously shares some further links (various money and business subject books) for knowledge by including an additional rich resource after each of the contrasting beliefs of the middle class and wealthy class.

About the Author

Ron Larson received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado in 1970. At that time he accepted a position with Penn State University, and he currently holds the rank of professor of mathematics at the university. Larson is the lead author of more than two dozen mathematics textbooks that range from sixth grade through calculus levels. Many of his texts, such as the tenth edition of his calculus text, are leaders in their markets. Larson is also one of the pioneers in the use of multimedia and the Internet to enhance the learning of mathematics. He has authored multimedia programs, extending from the elementary school through calculus levels. Larson is a member of several professional groups and is a frequent speaker at national and regional mathematics meetings.

Betsy Farber received her Bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Penn State University and her Master’s degree in mathematics from the College of New Jersey. Since 1976, she has been teaching all levels of mathematics at Bucks County Community College in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where she currently holds the rank of professor. She is particularly interested in developing new ways to make statistics relevant and interesting to her students and has been teaching statistics in many different modes—with the TI-84 Plus, with MINITAB, and by distance learning as well as in the traditional classroom. A member of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC), she is an author of The Student Edition of MINITAB and A Guide to MINITAB. She served as consulting editor for Statistics: A First Course and has written computer tutorials for the CD-ROM correlating to the texts in the Street Series in mathematics.

For the ridiculous price of this book, you'd think it would come with an access code to the Pearson MyStatLab that is a required supplement. It doesn't. You still have to buy the online access separate from this book, which is an additional $95. By purchasing the online access, you'll get an electronic version of the book. Check with your instructor first. I found out too late that I never needed to buy this book and that the electronic version was all that was needed. It's a total racket.

Not Recommended

While most reviews for this book have concerned themselves with the quality of the copy received, or the lack of access to the MyStatLab, my review will focus on the helpfulness of this text in understanding elementary statistics. This version is riddled with errors, particularly in chapters 7 and 9, where numerous definitions go unexplained, and numerous problems can not be solved given the information provided in the Appendix; these include, but are not limited to: missing values for confidence intervals for specified sample sizes, lack of definitions for such terms as x-naught, and limited explanation of margin of error and standard error for correlation. Furthermore, many of the tables and charts are printed at such a size that the details necessary to fully comprehending the theme of the chapter are impossible to discern. All this is in addition to the lack of access to MyStatLab, a bafflingly poor organization of the necessary appendix information, and the general lack of coherence between the chapters.

I understand well that math is a cumulative science, meaning that a student must master with a certain degree of proficiency the chapter prior in order to understand the chapter following, but the manner in which the information is presented and organized in the Larson+Farber text makes this impossible: it is tree, after tree, after tree, without any inclination that a forrest exists outside of the three to four sentences which preface each chapter. In order to succeed on any cumulative final or qualitative statistical analysis, it is necessary for a student to gain at least a moderately nuanced understanding of the forrest as well as the trees, but this text woefully misses the mark.

As a student, I found that this text exacerbated the difficulty I experienced in my elementary statistics class, and the price of the text, relative to the quality of its explanations, to be an unjustified onus upon the student. If you're a professor and you are considering the Larson+Farber text as the foundation of your course, I highly recommend that you consider the alternative options to this text.

Too long winded

After reading Daphne DuMaurier's later novels and short stories, I found Jamaica Inn a bit too long-winded. There are so many verbose descriptions of the landscape, the sea, the moors, the weather... and although DuMaurier was very good at creating mood, I think these descriptions may have taken away from the excellent characters and plot. It was one of her earlier works, though, so perhaps Ms. DuMaurier may have agreed with me on this. :)

Foreboding, tense

In the tradition of du Maurier, very tense and foreboding. I'd have expected nothing less. I find it interesting that she actually stayed at the real Jamaica Inn, and would've loved to see her at the modest desk in her room there, hunched over pen and paper, capturing the sounds, smells, everything about her.
My favorite of hers remains "Rebecca," but this one certainly held my attention as well.

Although it was well written I did not enjoy this book it was too graphic and mean and the subject matter was very black and hopeless. Even the heroine was not very redeeming.

About the Author
Steven A. Eggland is currently a Professor and Chair of the Department of Vocational and Adult Education in Teachers College at the University of Nebraska. He has taught a variety of general business courses and has a special interest in marketing education.

Les R. Dlabay, Ed.D. is Professor of Business in the Department of Economics and Business at Lake Forest College in Illinois. He has taught more than 30 different business courses in high school, community college, university, teacher preparation, and adult education programs. Dr. Dlabay has presented more than 300 teacher workshops and seminars emphasizing interactive learning strategies, including team projects and field research activities. His "hobbies" include a cereal package collection (from over 100 countries) and banknotes from 200 countries; these are used to teach economic, cultural, and political aspects of global business. In an effort to prepare students to do business in varied economic settings, Professor Dlabay makes extensive use of class assignments related to world hunger, poverty, micro-finance, and micro-enterprise.

James L. Burrow, Ph.D., has a background in marketing and human resource development. He works regularly with the business community and other organizations as a consultant on marketing and performance improvement strategies including the use of the Internet as an education and training resource. He recently retired from the faculty of North Carolina State University, where he served as the coordinator of the graduate Training and Development Program for over fifteen years. Dr. Burrow received degrees from the University of Northern Iowa and the University of Nebraska in marketing and marketing education.

About the Authors

Richard A. DeFusco, CFA, is an Associate Professor of Finance at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). He earned his CFA charter in 1999 and started CFA grading in 2000. He is a member of the Omaha-Lincoln Society of Financial Analysts, and serves on committees for the Association for Investment Management and Research. His primary teaching interest is investments and he coordinates the Cornhusker Fund—the student-managed investment fund at UNL. He has published a number of journal articles, primarily in the field of finance. He completed his bachelor’s degree in management science at the University of Rhode Island and doctoral degree in finance at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville.

Dennis W. McLeavey, CFA, is Vice President of Curriculum Development at the Association for Investment Management and Research. He obtained his CFA charter in 1990 and began CFA grading in 1995. During the early 1990s, he taught in the Boston University and the Boston Security Analysts’ CFA review programs. He subsequently served on the AIMR Council of Examiners and recently received an AIMR Ten-Year Certificate of Achievement for Continuing Education. Active in endowment fund management, he founded a student-managed fund at the University of Rhode Island and co-authored two college texts and several journal articles. He completed a doctorate in production management and industrial engineering at Indiana University in 1972, after studying economics for his bachelor’s degree at the University of Western Ontario in 1968.

Jerald E. Pinto, CFA, as principal of TRM Services, consults to corporations, foundations, and partnerships in investment planning, portfolio analysis, and quantitative analysis. Mr. Pinto previously taught finance at the NYU Stern School of Business after working in the banking and investment industries in New York City. He has lectured to business and government executives from the United States and abroad, and participates in the Society of Quantitative Analysts, Inc., and other forums. He holds an MBA from Baruch College and a Ph.D. in finance from the Stern School.

David E. Runkle, CFA, is Vice President and Research Manager at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. He has been an Adjunct Professor of Finance in the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota since 1989, where he teaches equity security analysis. He has consulted on valuation and financial performance since 1994. Before joining U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray, Runkle was a research officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis. He has published more than 20 academic articles and has won a number of awards, including the Wriston Prize for Outstanding Teaching (Brown University), an Elija Watt Sells Award for outstanding performance on the Certified Public Accountant examination, and a four-star rating as an outstanding professor in the Business Week Guide to the Best Business Schools. He is a member of the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants and was a member of the Candidate Curriculum Committee for AIMR. He received a B.A. in economics, summa cum laude! ! , from Carleton College and a Ph.D. in economics from M.I.T.

Difference between 2001 First edition and 2004 Second edition?

Given that the 2001 First edition is selling for $30 less used than the 2004 Second edition, is there a big difference between the 2 editions. Should I just save myself $30 and buy the first edition?

I randomly selected "3 stars" b/c I had to. I have no review of this book.

Think twice before buying

I have purchased this book because it was recommended reading for the CFA program.
Unfortunately, this book has really disappointed me. The author explains nothing but general statistics but attempts to add an "investment dimension" to his explanations. The writing style is anything but educational. The output is a unstructured, complicated and uncomprehensive text with examples that only add to your confusion. In many of the passages you get lost and don't understand what the author is trying to get across to you or where he is leading. The author frequently jumps from one topic to another and skips important information, not to mention the numerous printing errors in the text. I found myself struggling on one of the passages half an hour, when I finally decided to look up the same topic in the statistics book in the library. It explained everything in a matter of seconds.
Think twice before buying this book. Get ANY introductory business statistics text (e.g. Statistics for Management and Economics by Gerald Keller) - they ALL cover the SAME topics in a MUCH more understandable way.
