"Dolls" is set in Puritan America, where a group of wayward churchgoers have formed a sexually free group called the coven. The group's leader, John, uses dolls to strike at his enemies until his own power is turned on him in an unexpected way. In "The Other Woman," Phil becomes obsessed with the covers he paints for horror novels, which depict the strangulation of a beautiful woman. He is unable to muster up any passion for his wife, Hilary, until her growing frustration with his indifference forces him to try, with disastrous results. In "Stages," Ray discovers a powerful drug that allows him to participate in others' sexual experiences. Though the collection is a reprint, it features three new stories, "The Limits of Fantasy," "The Body in the Window," and "Kill Me Hideously," and a new afterword by the author, which begins, "Nobody rebels like a good Catholic boy." clever erotic horror anthology

This collection is a combination of a reprint of a previous anthology containing seven repeat tales plus three new short stories released in the nineties and a new afterward. Each tale is well written, cleverly designed and clearly show why Ramsey Campbell is the father of erotic horror, as they all star a perverted individual either as a tormentor or a victim. Not for everyone, Scared Stiff: Tales of Sex And Death consists of ten frightening and horrifying yet erotic somewhat perverted stories at least from the mindset of this middle age female boomer who loves the macabre but is often disgusted by the plots. This anthology provides a voyeur's look into the soul of this award winning horror author great.

The deadly art of seduction

Clive Barker's introduction is as good as the stories themselves, stating in regards to the melding of horror and erotica that "In an age when characters in all manner of fiction have forsaken their blushes to fornicate, horror fiction clings to its underwear with a nunnish zeal." Since Scared Stiff was first published in 1988, this was one of the influential books that led to the production of more erotica in horror, such as the Hot Blood series.

There are only seven tales in this collection, making it a wonderful traveling companion or vacation book. Starting with `Dolls', we visit a quiet village and the witch's coven that conjures the devil during orgies, leading to `The Other Woman', a tale of an artist's obsession with his work bleeding over onto the canvas of his own life.

Next is `Liliths', probably my favorite story in the compilation. A strange shop appears out of nowhere, and a man makes a purchase that changes his life. A life sized doll that fills him with compulsive behavior.

`The Seductress' is a low-key suspense tale, of obsessive love and a mother's revenge. `Stages' tells of us a deadly combination of $ex, drugs, and voyeurism. `Loveman's Comeback' speaks of possession, and the lengths one will go to in order to break out of a bad relationship. And finally, `Merry May' is about wandering into a strange town, and finding their odd celebration a little more than you can handle.

While in comparison to today's erotic horror, Scared Stiff is a bit tame for this blossoming genre, but Ramsey Campbell's early foray into this forbidden realm truly opened doors for those of us who enjoy peeking into the bloody rooms to find titillating delights within. If you are really a fan of visceral lust run amok, then you should own a copy of Scared Stiff. Enjoy!

Essential Ramsey Campbell

If you bought this book expecting a lot of sexual action, then you'll be sorely disappointed. Eroticism is *not* hot sex. Try your local adult bookstore, instead. That said, *real* Ramsey Campbell and/or *real* fans of the horror genre will appreciate this collection. To be fair, the first three titles aren't all that. They are, in fact, rather dull. However, the shudders and shivers pick up in "The Seductress" and increase from there. Hot sex seekers should look elsewhere for their carnal fixation(s).

Elle Woods rocks!

Nobody in the world could have dreamed that Elle Woods would be going to Stanford Law School. Come on! She's Miss June on the school calendar, homecoming queen, and big glamor girl Barbie. However when her long time boyfriend Warner breaks up with her because he needs a girlfriend that is more "serious" and can help him become president Elle decides she is going to prove herself very serious and follows Warner to law school. However from the first day Elle can tell Law School isn't really the place for a blonde. Plus she finds out that this totally unstylish, super serious looking Sarah is now engaged to Warner. However when things finally settle down Elle begins to find that law school isn't so bad. When she takes on the job as summer intern for Christoper Miles she finds that she is beginning to forget Warner. Now her new focus in life is this case about 23 year old Brooke Vandemark who is accused of murdering her 73 year old husband Heyworth Vandemark. It seems the only witness of the crime is Heyworth's 24 year old daughter Chutney. In the end Elle comes through with a trick any Cosmo girl would know to solve the case!
I absoulety love this book!! Even though I aint blonde it was still very funny for me! I have seen the movie too and I just have to say I love them both.

A Must-Read

Elle Woods is devastated when her boyfriend Warner Huntington III breaks up with her, instead of proposing (like she had thought). Now Elle is on a mission to become a wholesome girl like Warner wants. Which is why she's on her way to Stanford Law School. It's now up to her to break Warner and his new fiance up, and claim the man she came for. But while at Law School she realizes she likes it very much, and even starts the BLDF (Blonde Legal Defense Fund).
I recommend this book to all fans of the movie "Legally Blonde". While the book isn't exactly the same as the movie, it does resemble it, and is just as hilarious.

Good, but the movie is better

This is one of the rare cases where the movie is better than the book. The author states that the book is based on her experiences at Stanford law, but as a recent law school grad, I find the book unbelievable at some points. For example, Elle takes all of her classes pass/fail. As far as I know, the American Bar Association doesn't allow first year classes to be taken pass/fail. And as helpful as outlines are, they are no substitute for class attendance (which is required in law school, or you fail automatically) and studying!
The movie portrays Elle as a smart girl who works hard to get what she wants, the book portrays her as more of a spoiled brat who gets lucky.... I much prefer the former! Movie Elle wants to help everyone, book Elle only wants to help herself and other blondes.
If you have seen the movie, you don't need to read the book, the movie is better.

High quality, in content and production

This is an impressive book. Its hard cover with a dust jacket and weighs in at 192 pages and almost all of the art is color. Many of the pieces are full blown paintings. Most of the material in this book (about 45%) is concept art from Dead Space 3. While around 35% being from Dead Space 2, 15% from the first game and the rest from the graphical novel and spin off games.
There are sections on Isaac Clarke, other characters, weapons, suits, the USG Ishimura, vehicles, Unitologists, Necromorphs, the Blood Moon, The Sprawl, Culture , Tau Volantis and the Wrecked Flotilla and the graphic novel.
All of these sections are filled with commentary which is great. Having something to read in addition to the pictures always makes for a better, deeper and longer experience in an art book.
I do have complaints. They all stem from one general complaint: I wish there was more! What's here is so amazing but there are some things missing. The other characters section only contains art from Dead Space 3. So no Nicole Brennan, Alex Stross, Hammond, Tiedemann or *spits* Kendra Daniels. There are a few suits missing from the second and third games. Some weapons are missing. I am sure this is because there is already an artbook for the previous two games and they didn't want to reproduce too much content but both of those are quite hard to come by. I hope they do another book with more art from the other games.
The Necromorphs section is pretty thorough and cool beans. Slashers, wasters, stalkers, leapers, lurkers, The Snowbeast, The Tormentor, tripods, The Pack, alien necromorphs, The Nexus, crawlers, twitchers, exploders, Hunters (from 1 and 3), The Ubermorph, brutes and pukers are all present. Weirdly missing are Feeders from the new game. No bosses Proper from the first game are present. And no *sniff* Dividers. A great section though.
Something else of merit to note is how large the environment sections are. Some paintings span two pages. This is great as in a lot of video game art books the environment sections are small and the art is reduced to puny thumbnail size. This book really lets these beautiful pieces shine.
I love Dead Space. I love this book. I have already been through the new game three times in two weeks and I have been through this book twice as many times. This book is essential for fans of the series. Horror/sci fi enthusiasts would find joy in these pages also.

Fascinating Look at the Dead Space World

If you're a fan of the games (and like artbooks). this artbook is a must buy. It's an oversized hardcover, with a slipcover. Other reviewers have broken down the contents, but while the emphasis is on the later content of the franchise (i.e., particularly Dead Space 3), there's plenty of everyone here.

I especially appreciate the detailed commentary on nearly every piece of work. Very interesting. And while I might have preferred more focus on the earlier games, anecdotes such as buying a butchered goat to pull apart for artistic reference--apparently, fish guts are useful, as well--easily make the book worthwhile. I mean, pending the upcoming Art of Hannibal book, how can you beat the (mental) image of game developers elbow-deep in goat entrails?!

I really liked this book. Two complaints.

I really enjoyed this book. It's the first art book of a video game I've purchased. I like pretty much everything about it but there's a few criticisms I have:
1. It's organized in a bit of a weird way. It'll go back and forth between DS 1-3, and I got the sense it was more an error than purposeful ordering.
2. There was a typo in one of the descriptions. With a book that has relatively little text I wonder how that got past the editor.

Having been writing guidebooks and other work about Disney and their theme parks for almost 20 years, we like to think of this as a whole new breed of guidebook, one that both informs and guides but also enriches the reader's appreciation of these wonderful theme park creations.

We took the style and ethic of Susan's 'Hidden Magic of WDW' as our starting point and went back to basics, telling stories, finding more 'hidden magic' and providing the kind of info we'd want to know, both as first-timers and repeat visitors. An excellent guide for your travels to DisneyWorld!

I have been fortunate to read a LOT of DisneyWorld (and Disneyland) books and guides over the years since I"ve been to WDW 15 times and Disneyland 7 times (oh, and 4 Disney Cruises). This book is a five star book because for rookies and veterans it is a helpful source in every regard. Good maps of the various parks with good information about various rides (who will/will not like the particular ride, etc...) and good information about the parks themselves and the various places to eat at Disney World.

The book is an easy read and would be a guide you might take with you at the park (it's a bit large so you'd want to put it in a backpack, etc...on your adventures at WDW). This guide does not have very many pictures (only a few color photos in the back of the book), but the maps are excellent in the book and there are small pockets where you can put tickets, notes, etc...inside the book along with the ability to keep a diary in the book of your adventures with Mickey and all the great characters at WDW.

I recently reviewed another Disney Guide book and this one is also a five star guide to WDW. This is a good book for those planning their trip and to write down the magic memories they have while at the greatest theme park in the world. Maybe, when you have this book at the park you can get the characters to autograph the book in various sections of the book for you and your kids. That will make it an even greater keepsake!

I purchased the Hidden Magic of Walt Disney World book when it was first published and was greatly impressed with it. Instead of telling me where I should run off to next to enjoy my WDW vacation, it instead showed me how to elevate my appreciation of the parks to a whole new level. As a result, when I speak with veteran WDW guests who believe they've seen it all, I frequently recommend the book to them as a way to take their visits to the next level.

So, imagine my surprise when I happened to look on Amazon the other day and discovered that two of my very favorite WDW experts and authors had published a brand new planner. Without even being certain exactly what I was ordering (though certainly having a good idea), I immediately placed my order for the new planner and received it today.

I haven't fully digested all the information in the new planner yet, it's simply too full of great information to help plan and remember my wonderful WDW vacations. While the Hidden Magic of Walt Disney World was well suited for the experienced WDW visitor, I would highly recommend this to the fairly inexperienced and veteran traveller alike. It's chock full of information to help someone plan their trip to WDW, from choosing a resort, to visiting the parks, and enjoying some great family dining experiences along the way. And there are ample sections in the book placed appropriately to allow one to make memorable journal entries along the way, along with numerous "pocket pages" to collect receipts and photos. They can all be kept permanently in this planner, or transferred to a scrap book later on.

Indeed, for the well seasoned visitor, much, if not most of what is in this planner can be found elsewhere. However, for the pitance that this planner cost me, I anticipate a return on my investment many times over as everything I require to enjoy my WDW trip, and all of my vacation memories, are all collected in one convenient location to help simplify my vacation planning, reduce my planning stress and bring me many years of wonderful vacation memories.

Love the organization and details of this little book!

A little about me (currently): mom to twin 4 year olds, thinking about going to Disney World (and maybe Disney Cruise), have not done any research on Disney, haven't been to Disney myself in eons. As a professional, I research a lot and love to dig through information.

First off, I love that this is a SPIRAL bound book. Makes it so easy to lay this book flat and it stay where I left it, or, you can bend the book all the way around so you just have one page facing up.

The layout of the book is really pleasant and consistent. The words/content was not scrunched on to the pages, it is very easy to read, and actually room for notes (if you want) right on the page. Each chapter starts out with an Intro, and then a "Practical Information". As the authors tell you about hotels, attractions, etc., they call out "Hidden Magic" (which I equate to like an Easter Egg ;); "Reality Check" (what I call a "let's think about it" moment); "Rookie Mistakes" (probably what a lot of people do, but you now have a seasoned professional calling it out).

One thing I LOOOOOVE about this book - the icons/ratings that are used. 1.) They are nicely laid out at the beginning and defined 2.) They are on all of the pages!!! So, while reading, you don't have to think "hmmm..what does that star w/ a 4 mean?" I will try to upload a couple of pictures for you to see what I mean. They have "Scare Factor", "Attraction Rating", "Dining Ratings", "Price Ratings" (how expensive), "Service Ratings" (type of service provided and credits needed), "Motion Discomfort Ratings"

I believe at the end of each chapter, there are 3-4 blank pages where you can "write your own story" or just take notes.

There are a few pull out maps included. They are in color, and thick/sturdy paper.

A couple of places there are file/pockets available. I'm guessing you could stash receipts, notes, etc. (either for planning or looking back on the trip).

An index is included at the back, which is helpful.
At the very end are a few pictures that they referenced - could be helpful - but to me were not of added value.

It's a good starting point

Overly simplistic and not enough facts (I read them cover to cover). It's a good starting point, but you need more supplementary information to be able to start up/support a tropical aquarium than these books. I was a bit disappointed that I had spent money on these. I wouldn't recommend them.

My dad is planning to have an aquarium and I want to help him that’s why I grabbed this book for a help.
I’m glad I did, this is big help learning from the basic stuff about aquarium box and what fish to choose.
It’s the proper care and maintenance that comes with a step-by-step guide, some great tips and advice are also included.
I can’t wait to set our very own aquarium at home.

A box set that’s both worth reading for. Both are very comprehensive and detailed and it offers a lot to the reader. I actually became very knowledgeable about the subject and I can say that this is a very helpful tool for anyone who’s planning on having a tropical fish and a freshwater aquarium. The book has it all. It firstly deals with the basics that one should be able to know first and it even provides illustrations for faster understanding. It’s truly a good one and I highly recommend it.

Exploring After the End

I purchased this book for my daughter, Sarah. She wrote in it and underlined words and left it a rag tag mess. After she passed away in a car accident when she was 16, I loved flipping through the pages seeing her thoughts and observations.

Get your youngsters interested in the world around them with this book

I purchased two of these books for different children, and each is using the book in their own ways to learn about the world in which they live. Not a day goes by that one or the other doesn't discover, on their own, something else amazing about the environment they occupy. Want to get your child away from the video games? Off the cell phone for hours at a time? Offer this book as a gift, and watch their knowledge grow page by page as they themselves become to authors of their own experiences in learning. These books are truly amazing, and do not have to be limited to children. Many bored adults who could use an inspiration that life doesn't have to be mundane can benefit from the use of this book. I recommend it for all ages and a book for each family member. If each one has his own book, discussions can begin at any time with everyone participating on different discoveries while the book has given each person the same suggestion for an 'assignment.' Fun and informative gift for anyone for any occasion.

cool, if you ignore the garbage factor

The messy fonts kind of drive me nuts, but the content is inspiring and high quality. I'd be careful giving this book to a kid, since the author basically encourages you to pick up garbage off the street and bring it home. There could be some hazards and cleanliness issues there. I use it as an inspiration tool, since some of the quotes appeal to me or challenge me, and it does encourage you to open your eyes and see the world. It's cute, interesting, and clearly made with love.

The Literary Agenda is a series of short polemical monographs about the importance of literature and of reading in the wider world and about the state of literary education inside schools and universities. The category of "the literary" has always been contentious. What is clear, however, is how increasingly it is dismissed or is unrecognized as a way of thinking or an arena for thought. It is skeptically challenged from within, for example, by the sometimes rival claims of cultural history, contextualized explanation, or media studies. It is shaken from without by even greater pressures: by economic exigency and the severe social attitudes that can follow from it; by technological change that may leave the traditional forms of serious human communication looking merely antiquated. For just these reasons this is the right time for renewal, to start reinvigorated work into the meaning and value of literary reading.

The Novel: A Survival Skill is the fruit of a lifetime's search for a different, more immediate, but again systematic and serious way of talking about literature. Developed over many years, it offers a completely new account of the relationship between a writer, his or her work, and the reader. As such it radically undermines traditional literary criticism and the various criteria used for evaluating a work of fiction. Drawing on ideas from systemic psychology, Tim Parks suggests that both the content and style of a novelist's work, the kind of stories told and the way in which they are told, form part of a more general strategy or simply habit of communication that the novelist has learned within his or her family of origin. The reader reacts to these in very much the same way he or she would react to the same communicative strategy in a real life encounter, different readers reacting differently depending on their own backgrounds and habits of communication.

Looking at the different value structures that can dominate in any family--good/evil, independence/dependence, success/failure, belonging/exclusion--this book looks at how a number of major writers position themselves within these value structures, how this positioning is manifest in their writing, and how readers have responded to this depending on their own positioning in the same semantics. Thomas Hardy, for example, a man eager to believe himself courageous but terrified of the consequences of any socially "unacceptable" behavior, constructs stories which are courageous in their willingness to debate difficult issues, but which constantly suggest that any attempt to behave courageously is condemned to disaster. Hardy, as it were, imprisons himself in a world where it is folly to take risks. He is thus exceedingly conservative in his life, while at the same time able to think of himself as courageous in his writing. The Novel: A Survival Skill looks at the way different readers in different periods respond to this depending on their own position with regard to fear, courage, social convention and so on.

About the Author

Born in Manchester in 1954, Tim Parks studied at Cambridge and Harvard before moving permanently to Italy in 1981. Author of three bestselling books on Italy, and fifteen novels, including the Booker short-listed Europa, and most recently Painting Death, he has translated works by Moravia, Calvino, Calasso, Machiavelli and Leopardi. While running a post-graduate degree course in translation at IULM University, Milan, he writes regularly for the LRB and the NYRB. His non-fiction works include, Translating Style, a literary approach to translation problems, Medici Money, an account of the relation between banking, the Church and art in the 15th century, and four accounts of life in contemporary Italy, Italian Neighbours, An Italian Education, A Season with Verona and Italian Ways, on and off the rails from Milan to Palermo.

Erudite, accessible, revelatory, absorbing and utterly compulsive!

As soon as I heard that Parks (whom I think is a particularly fine writer on philosophical matters) had written a book re-evaluating literary criticism of the novel, I was instantly sold and frothing at the mouth, anxious to lay my hands on a copy. And so delighted it find it as an offer for review from Amazon Vine

I finished this a few days ago, in a whirl of underlining, notes-to-self and fizzing with excitement. Was it as wonderful as my expectations were telling me. Oh yes, and far more

I don’t know whether it is zeitgeist, or what, but for an increasing while I’ve been aware that my appreciation of novels has little to do with anything I was taught about ‘lit-crit’ and its coolness in my long ago sojourn in academia. Instead, what obsesses me is ‘the voice’ of the author. And the relationship that voice has with me, as reader. ‘Voice’ for sure has something to do with style, but what I am feeling for is something behind the use of language and its ability to make me see fresh. (what I think of as ‘poetic sensibilities’ – the eschewing of clich�, the ability to wake me into the world and engage properly) What I want is to be in some way arrested by the writer, spun round to face them, and have an engagement with their particular humanity. I’m wedded to ‘the arts’ as being awakeners, being transformative – what I want is to be CHANGED in some way, to engage in relationship with the work of art, so that curiously, it feels as if I have entered into a dynamic response, something which is discriminating mind, affected and affecting heart, visceral gut instinct, and, overall, something transpersonal. I’m after a response which is absolutely subjective, my response. Having total validity to me alone, because of who I am, and the way in which the particular writer, like any other particular individual, speaks, or does not speak, connects or does not connect with me. My interest is in the relationship – this writer, this reader – how and why will this particular connection happen. And how and why might other readers connect with this writer. ‘Objective’ assessment is less interesting to me – in some ways, this is always an illusion the observer is always a part of the experiment, at least at a quantum level.

So…….long preamble, what does this have to do with Parks?

What used to be called “Biographical Fallacy” is a dismissive view of literary analysis which connects the writer and his/her life to their works. Lit-crit has focused more on different strands – ‘in the world’ strands – criticism from a Marxist perspective, a feminist perspective, for example, or on microscopic textual analysis.

Parks began to sing seductively and compelling to this reader, setting out his approach to a different, enhanced ‘biographical’ way of engaging with the writer, the work, the reader, and all connections between them

“The novel, then, is not some magically separate art object entire unto itself, but something plucked from the flow of a life. The reader encounters the author through what he has written and a relationship is established, one that will not be entirely distinct from the kind of relationships the author seeks in his life, or that readers form in theirs”……………….”When we open a novel, as with any encounter, we move into an area of risk”

Parks’ approach to lit-crit is connected with systemic psychology, family dynamics, and heavily influenced by a friend of his, Italian psychologist Valeria Ugazio. The two discuss each others’ fields, and clearly there is a lot of intellectual cross-pollination.

What Parks does, with four major authors he examines – Joyce, Hardy, Lawrence, Dickens, is to look at formative influences, family dynamics, and, as it were, the story, the super-objective (as well as subtext) of emotional tone and dynamic engaged in. A kind of family food, in other words, which will be expressed through the individual writer and reader. So, for Joyce, there is a winner/loser competitiveness, for Dickens, belonging/unbelonging and, for both Hardy and Lawrence, different approaches along the polarity of fear and courage.

Parks also puts himself under this microscope, and had me jumping joyously precisely because I identified a dynamic of my own – the sense of good/bad and worthy/unworthy becoming ever more refined. He talks feelingly about the idea of reading itself being (or needing to be) worthy and transformative. Parks was a ‘son of the manse’ as it were, so brought up in an idea of the power of the word. Or at least The Word. This invests language and literature with huge power. Parks was aware of ‘good literature’ and ‘bad literature’ – and found in literature, he was particularly attracted to where the certainties of ‘good’ or ‘bad’ characters and stories were not presented black or white, but

“books that returned life to the great confusion I always felt it was”

I didn’t grow up in any sort of overt religious space, but I did grow up in a home where the transformation and the transpersonal connectivity had been absorbed from a kind of pan-religious view and art was become the place where transformation happens.

“it did seem to me that novels were the kind of space where one needed to be free to explore the most difficult things,….It is precisely when we intensely disagree with a book, or when we feel that a character is acting in a way that is quite incredible to us – that we should begin to wonder whether this is mere incompetence (quite possible of course) or whether it alerts us to a whole different way of conceiving of the world and positioning oneself in it”

Each reader, of course, will find their own point of resonance in this book, what Parks is asking the reader to do IS to explore themselves, to reflect and actively engage as they read.

For me, there was gold, not glitter, on every page.

I have one criticism, not enough to reduce any star rating – it is all (with a small nod to Virginia Woolf) an examination of the ‘male literary giants’ However, as the author, a man, perceives his world through his masculine embodiment, and is of course stressing that the reader should be aware they are responding out of their own individual (embodied, of course) being, it feels dishonest of me to ‘expect’ the engagement with writers to be with those embodied as female. Parks explored writers who spoke strongly to HIM.

Read this book!

Absolutely incredible. This book has changed the way I look at writing and reading. Parks has amazing powers of perception, and the way that he is able to articulate his highly meaningful and provocative insights quite frankly blows my mind. If you are into literary criticism, if you are interested in interrogating mainstream conceptions of art, literature, and narrative, this book will be extremely rewarding. I can't do justice to how important I think this book is. If you like it, "Where I'm Reading From" is also great.
