Very well written book. This book provides many more insights into groups than any other book that I have read. After reading it I was able to return to more advance texts and get more out of them. As for reviewers who were disappointed that the author chose not to provide proofs for everything I think this is not a fair attitude. The fact is that their are plenty of books out there that fulfill that particular need. There are not so many books that go beyond that and provide insight and connections that are difficult to attain early in your studies. I do not see the need to provide a proof if a theorem is 1)understandable and 2) it is easily motivated by other means. The author is definitely in tune with his readers (most of them I think). I will be investigating the other books by this author.

Phenomenal intro to Lie groups / algebras via matrix groups suitable for self-study

It's true as the other reviewers have said: this is an exceptionally good introduction to Lie groups and Lie algebras via matrix groups. It's also suitable for self-study provided you have the required math background. Although it's very much in the definition-theorem-proof mode, there's plenty of insightful and well-written exposition motivating the formal development.

My only complaint is that there are no solutions to any exercises and even worse, the proofs of a number of propositions are left to the reader. This detracts from the value of the book for self-study, but not too much because on balance, in my view, the sheer excellence of the presentation pretty much makes up for that all too common "sin of omission".

The book is extremely concise: only about 137 small pages excluding exercises (no solutions) and back matter. To illustrate: in the chapter (pp. 5-20), one rapidly covers fields and skew-fields (pp. 7-8), quaternions (pp 8-9); the real, complex and quaternion skew-field inclusions (p. 10); matrices as linear transformations (pp. 15-16); general linear groups (pp. 17-18); and finally, change of basis via conjugation (pp. 18-20). In its entirety, the book covers, in the same no-nonsense way: Ch 1. Matrices, Ch. 2 All matrix groups are real matrix groups, Ch. 3 The orthogonal groups, Ch 4. The topology of matrix groups, Ch 5. Lie algebras, Ch 6. Matrix exponentiation, Ch. 7 Matrix groups as manifolds, Ch 8. The Lie bracket, Ch 9. Maximal tori. And, as another reviewer pointed out, the author's AMS website has a free download, Ch 10. Roots, and an errata sheet.

The pace might seem daunting for a first introduction, especially for self-study, but the exposition is so crystal clear that I could hardly put the book down (and I am not a mathematics major, just someone interested in learning the mathematics required for modern physics).

Autodidacts should especially note that it is essential that you have the prerequisites as stated in the introduction on p 7. To wit: multivariable calculus & basic analysis; abstract algebra (groups, subgroups, quotient groups, fields, morphisms, conjugation) and standard linear algebra including linear transformations and relation to matrices, eigenvalues/eigenvectors. You also need to be confident in your abstract mathematical skills; proofs are clear but they're generally quite abstract and concise; there's no hand-holding in that area.

Definitely the best book in the subject.

Definitely the best presentation of the subject I've ever seen. I am consistently frustrated by introductory textbooks on Lie groups 'n' stuff, because they assume far too much background knowledge. This textbook actually assumes a background only in linear algebra and group theory, and builds everything else from the ground up. It's short and sweet, and wonderfully written. Highly recommended!

About the Author
Dr. Poindexter is an associate professor in the School of Social Services at Fordham University. Her areas of research and interest include HIV/AIDS, Management, Community Practice, and Gerontology.

Deborah Valentine is currently a professor and director of the School of Social Work at Colorado State University. She teaches social work practice at the BSW, MSW and PhD levels. Her areas of research interest include social work practice with children and families and people with developmental disabilities. Dr. Valentine has published numerous articles and books based on her research, and has presented her work at national and international conferences. She has taught social work classes in Ecuador, Lithuania and Korea. She began a three-year term as the Editor-in-Chief of the JOURNAL OF SOCIAL WORK EDUCATION in May 2003.

Van Gogh's 22 letters to Émile Bernard, a fellow artist whom Van Gogh met in Paris, are significant in helping us understand the great masterpieces he would paint later, after his move to Arles. Since Bernard's side of the correspondence is lost, he plays the foil to the older, more experienced van Gogh, who elaborates on a philosophy of painting (in the end it's a question of expressing oneself powerfully), on the work he hopes to do (A starry sky, for example, well-it's a thing that I should like to try to do, just as in the daytime I'll try to paint a green meadow studded with dandelions) and on the influences of other great painters like Vermeer and Rembrandt. Much more than a catalog, this book accompanying the Morgan Library & Museum's current exhibition includes lively English translations of van Gogh's spirited correspondence with his younger friend Bernard. While the paintings should be appreciated in person, the letters -- also transcribed in French and reproduced in facsimile -- work best in book form. Adorned with van Gogh's sketches, they begin with his move from Paris to the rural town of Arles in 1887 and end just a few months before his suicide in 1889. A new insight into Van Gogh's working method

The 22 letters written by Van Gogh to French painter Emile Bernard, in which he almost exclusively discusses the subject of painting with a fellow artist, are the subject of this beautiful volume which accompanies an exhibition of the letters at the Pierpont Morgan library in NYC. Each of the letters is reproduced through a high-quality facsimile and also translated into English. Many works Van Gogh alludes to in those letters are also reproduced and every letter is carefully annotated which helps the reader understand the many references the artist cites as sources of inspiration to his work.

This is a groundbreaking publication that gives the reader invaluable insights into Van Gogh thoughts and working methods and comes as a perfect complement to the already published correspondence of the artist with his brother and dealer Theo. The letters to Bernard are more spontaneous because they were written by an artist to another artist and the introduction of the book explains this very well.

An excellent addition to the library of anyone with a serious interest in Vincent van Gogh, or for that matter Emile Bernard.

In 1996 I enjoyed reading the selected letters of van Gogh, a gifted writer, in a book edited by Ronald De Leeuw. This current effort has a more narrow focus but is greatly enhanced by the fine selection of accompanying artwork. The explanatory chapter notes are superb.

Its editors and the Morgan Library should win prizes for this scholarly work.

All reviews are 5 stars? seriously?? c'mon guys, if you want to "learn" ionic framework, in my opinion, this is not the right book.
Ok, it is not expensive, but you can find articles on the web more detailed and clear. If I search for a book to learn developing mobile apps with Ionic framework, I need a step-by-step book which explains in deep what I'm doing. I can suggest this book to people who already know AngularJS and already have a bit of background about Ionic framework, but if you are really newbie, this book is not helpful.
Just an example: there is less than a page to explain what is Firebase...
@Authors: Sorry if my review is not a 5 stars, but I would prefer to pay a bit more and have a complete and detailed book.

Not the best one, but ok.

Before I purchased that ebook, I checked out the introduction and the topics. At the beginning, I was so excited, that I found a tutorial about the topics I was interested in. Overall, the tutorials were okay, but there're things to improve:
Often I didn't know in which file we're. I always had to checkout the Git Repository to understand, where to place the snippets. It would be nice to always have a headline with the filename. Sometimes the description wasn't clear enough.

But what do I expect for 2€. At the end, I'm still thankful for the tutorial, but they aren't worth 4 or 5 stars. Sorry.

For just a dollar, this is a great investment for anyone new to Ionic, or just learning on a new app. For twenty bucks, perhaps not. It is a very thin tutorial/overview, meaning nothing is dealt with in depth. The basics are covered, and you can go through all the examples very quickly. He points you to places to see tools or resources in more depth. For a modest sum, there is a very good, basic overview on udemy, among other places.

This book was an excellent reference for the 21st Century Job Skills class I had to update and teach. It has a clear and concise description of the four Cs then suggestions for developing curriculum to teach them in K-12. Should I teach the class again (I am an adjunct.), I may require the students to purchase it.

– every topic has with the best initial test

I purchased this book 3 weeks before the actual ABIM board exam.
This book serves its purpose very well which is to describe what is important and what is not as far as passing the exam is concerned.
I believe that an exam's preparation can be divided into two parts. First is to learn the constants which are always going to be checked on the exam in various forms and can be predicted as well as learned in a fairly short duration of time. The second part of preparation is about the variables, and it takes a much longer duration of time to learn, assimilate and master. This book will teach you the constants well so that you can pass the exam. Do not use it to improve your medicine skills in general.
Pros:
– every topic has with the best initial test, most accurate test, best initial treatment and most common wrong answers. This approach cuts the chase to what you really need to know.
– Tips and tricks regarding keywords to look for in the questions to quickly select the right answers
– Very useful tables for quick review
– a lot of space on the edges of papers to take extra notes.

I loved this book. I am not a scholar or a top performer, but I know that this book allowed me to review the most important topics in the limited number of days I had before the exam so that most of the questions on the real exam appeared very familiar.

Kill the messenger-Slatzer is a hero!

Liar huh? Says Spoto, huh? Spoto is the liar, he must have been paid off, he left out a lot of information on MM-JFK-RFK he knew, some of this was found in his original notes, but left out of the book. He is the one who spun the lies to deflect away from the Kennedys and tried to implicate the maid and Dr. as the killers. Also garbage is that Dimaggio and Monroe would remarry. How is it no one knew about this, no caterer, no arrangements, no dress revealed by her designer Jean Louis, nothing. If Slatzer was such a liar, just how did he know so much in 1974 which has over the years been revealed by others. I saw a documentery with Slatzer, Jane Russell, and MM's first husband James Dougherty, all together sharing stories of her. Who is the liar here, Jane, James, or just Robert? Try and rewrite history all you want, now that the principles are dead, I am sure there will be attempts. Like it or not, Jeanne Carmen lived next to MM and knew her, as did Robert Slatzer. If you really want to know the real Marilyn and what happened, this was a ground breaking book, absolutely riviting. The first time I read it I was in shock, back then we didn't know what we know now. But, like I said over these past 30-40 years the truth has come out, so now who is the liar?

Best Marilyn book I have ever read

This was written by Marilyn Monroe's best friend and confidante. The book clearly shows that Marilyn was murdered, with believable evidence, autopsy reports and documented conversations from wiretaps. I don't know why people doubt Bob Slatzer's claim that he was close to Marilyn. Just because Marilyn wasn't public about their relationship, for whatever reason, doesn't mean that it didn't exist. Recently I stumbled upon a tabloid magazine from the 50's with an article about Marilyn and Bob Slatzer's affair. Maybe it was a secret because it was an affair. Bob Slatzer was portrayed in this article as Marilyn's secret lover, and apparently it was going on at a time when she was with Bob DiMaggio, so it makes sense that it was kept undercover, (no pun intended). It was undoubtedly true if back then, the paparazzi discovered the affair and published it in a 1950's tabloid magazine with photographs of them together. Marilyn was probably the one that wouldn't or couldn't go public with this relationship and Bob probably wanted the world to know,....and he did after Marilyn had nothing to lose. Their affair might have been short lived, but their friendship lived on. Bob writes this book knowing things only a best friend could know and shares these parts of Marilyn's personality with whomever reads the book. The book unravels the mystery of her death in a way that is so clear, that after having read the book, I have no doubts about what happened in the end. Bob tells the facts and lets you figure it out for yourself. This is the best Marilyn book out there. It is a keeper about the life and death of Marilyn Monroe.

THE DEFINITIVE BOOK ABOUT THE LIFE & DEATH OF MONROE

I wish this book would be reprinted. At the time it was first published it caused a lot of controversy. It has stood the test of time. Many people were "leery" of the assertions that Marilyn Monroe had been murdered,but since this author's long and trying efforts to show the real facts of what happened to Marilyn, many of the real facts he presented to the public in 1974 have been made public. Many people did not want or know whether to believe Slatzer's accounts of Monroe's keeping a diary, and recording her accounts of "what Bobby Kennedy told her". Recently released and published FBI & CIA documents "PROVE" that Slatzer was INDEED RIGHT ABOUT MARILYN & THE KENNEDY BROTHERS. A recently de-classified CIA DOCUMENT BOLDLY STATES THAT IN 1962, "THE CIA WAS AWARE THAT MARILYN MONROE KEPT A SO-CALLED DIARY THAT RECORDED CONVERSATIONS SHE HAD WITH THE THEN ATTORNEY GENERAL, ROBERT F. KENNEDY. THE CONTENTS OF HER DIARY DISCUSSED AMOUNG OTHER THINGS; THE PLOT TO KILL CASTRO; THE FACT THE CIA/GOVERNMENT HAD MAFIA HOODLUMS ON THE PAYROLL;etc. At least this author personally knew his subject and has made countless efforts to clear the smeared reputation the executives at 20th Century Fox Film Corp., gave her, as well as the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, and The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office placed on her. The Studio at the time of her death, did not make an effort to state they had in fact re-hired MM for "Something's Got To Give", along with the fact they had given her a raise in salary. The Coroner,The D.A.'s Office,and certain higher ups in the LAPD have kept closed mouthed about the truth of her murder and continue this ridiculous behavior today. Even former Deputy District Attorney, John Miner, who witnessed her autopsy,now admits, as Slatzer had written in 1974, that Monroe did not in fact, commit suicide, and DID in fact, have relations with the Both John & Bobby Kennedy and made recordings at the suggestions of her psychiatrist, Ralph Greenson, of said relations. This author is probably the most well informed and possibly the last remaining close confident that Marilyn Monroe had. If there are any more Biographies written on Marilyn Monroe, I hope that Mr. Robert Slatzer is the author.That way, we can set the record straight once again, and hopefully forget about the mis-information that people have been writing for the last 16 or more years.

Perl & LWP sets out to unwrap the Library for the Web in Perl (LWP), which is a collection of modules that make it easier to access and pick apart Web pages (and FTP-accessible files, and outgoing e-mail messages) from within your Perl programs. The book succeeds wonderfully, not only in conveying the technical aspects of LWP programming, but in making clear the fun of doing work that's very well suited to Perl. Sean Burke assumes that his readers know something about Perl, albeit not much, and a similar amount about HTML. He does a great job of explaining how LWP functions fit into Perl programs, and how you can use them to make reference to Internet resources far more easily than before.

Burke's narrative takes the form of a guided tour in which he introduces his readers to aspects of the LWP modules one by one. His tone is generally straightforward (sharp commentary alternates with brief code listings, with occasional passages of reference material), but there's sometimes an undercurrent of exuberance that makes the reader want to get going with his or her own programming right away. Overall, the emphasis is on teaching both LWP and Perl itself to the extent necessary to do LWP work. Because of the concise and nicely indexed code modules, though, you'll find this book useful as a reference after you're under way with LWP. --David Wall

This book can teach you expert-level web scraping/munging.

If you aren't yet comfortable using object-oriented Perl modules, the multitude of examples will at least allow you see how it's done even if you're a bit fuzzy on what's happening 'underneath' when you call object methods. If you're comfortable learning how to do something without knowing exactly why it works, then the author's clear step-by-step explantions and numerous progressively more powerful examples should make this book accessible even to relatively innexperienced Perl programmers.
More experienced programmers will understand better why things work, but any Perl programmer will set this book down feeling empowered to turn the web into their own valet. No longer do you need to check multiple sites looking for interesting information. Instead, you can readily author code to do that for you and alert you when items of interest are found. You can use these tools to free up personal time, to harvest information to inform business decisions, to automate tedious web application testing, and a zillion other things.
The author's clear exploration of the relevant Perl modules leaves the reader with a good depth of understanding of what these modules do, when you might want to use which module, and how to use them for real world tasks. Before reading the book, I knew of these modules, but they were a rather intimidating pile. I'd used a few of them on occasion for rather limited projects, but was reluctant to invest the time required to read all of the documentation from the whole collection. Mountains of method-level documentation do not a tutorial make. This book takes all of that information, selects the most important parts, and ensures that those parts are covered in progressively more powerful and/or flexible examples.
If you know Perl and you're sick of 'working the web' to get information and you want the web to work for you instead, then you need this book. I had a personal project that was on the back burner for a couple of years because it just sounded too hard. The weekend after I finished this book, I wrote what I had previously thought to be the hard part of that project and it was both easy and fun. This book makes hard things not just possible, but actually easy.

Excellent coverage of LWP, packed full of useful examples

I was definitely interested when I first heard that O'Reilly were publishing a book on LWP. LWP is a definitive collection of perl modules covering everything you could think of doing with URIs, HTML, and HTTP. While 'web services' are the buzzword friendly technology of the day, sometimes you need to roll your sleeves up and get a bit dirty scraping screens and hacking at HTML. For such a deep subject, this book weighs in at a slim 242 pages. This is a very good thing. I'm far too busy to read these massive shelf-destroying tomes that seem to be churned out recently.
It covers everything you need to know with concise examples, which is what makes this book really shine. You start with the basics using LWP::Simple through to more advanced topics using LWP::UserAgent, HTTP::Cookies, and WWW::RobotRules. Sean shows finger saving tips and shortcuts that take you more than a couple notches above what you can learn from the lwpcook manpage, with enough depth to satisfy somebody who is an experienced LWP hacker.

This book is a great reference, just flick through and you'll find a relevant chapter with an example to save the day. Chapters include filling in forms and extracting data from HTML using regular expressions, then more advanced topics using HTML::TokeParser, and then my preferred tool, the author's own HTML::TreeBuilder. The book ends with a chapter on spidering, with excellent coverage of design and warnings to get your started on your web trawling.

The draconian path through the Nordic power!!!

This is one of the books that I have most enjoyed those published by Michael Kelly. Personally, the runes fascinate me, and this book has illustrated me with new knowledge and uses of the runes, the Nordic mythology and its magic. This book can be studied and practiced at the side of Apophis. In fact, its purpose is the same and will give you power that it will be necessary for the proposal of his next book: Draconian Consciousness. I recommend this book for any student of magic, and above all the draconian path.
