This third novel from the well-received Divakaruni is a successor to her second, Sister of My Heart. That was a coming-of-age novel following best friends Anju and Sudha from childhood in Calcutta to arranged marriages. This one is a being-of-age novel that picks up the two a year later in America, as Sudha leaves India (and her husband) with a baby daughter to join Anju, who has just suffered a traumatic miscarriage. The two reunite and puzzle their way through U.S. ways, but the bond is threatened by Anju's husband's manifest and growing attraction to Sudha. The plot twists, the characters are engaging, and Divakaruni's vaunted style is evident (although there's some overwriting here, too). A turning point for the writer...but not her best book

I've read all of Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni's fiction, and have frequently recommended this tremendously gifted writer to my friends. I eagerly awaited this book, only to be disappointed. Sister of My Heart, of course, doesn't need a sequel, and the author herself has said that she considered the story finished. Only many years later after other projects did she find she still had more to say about Anju and Sudha.
And what she has to say is very different from the earlier book. Where Sister affirmed the loving if tangled connections between its characters, Vine finds them tearing each other apart. Unfortunately, there's not enough movement in the story's first half, just an ever-elaborated atmosphere of tension. Worse, the author's trademark sumptuous language is overdone, and it throws off the balance of wordcraft with story. She delivers gem-like descriptions of trash rolling down the street but leaves the characters curiously opaque, their motivations described in artificial and thoroughly unconvincing ways. I never understood why the women acted the way they did, and felt, sadly, that I was missing the drama of present desire contending with past affection, since the loving friendship here threatened was nowhere in evidence. Given these problems with the plot and the characters, I found the language distracting and ineffective, despite some lovely images.
I did however find the book grew stronger and more powerful in the second half, after the uncomfortable menage a trois is broken up and the characters pursue their lives separately. Towards the end Divakaruni delivers some truly moving insights into the emotional realities we all share, reminding me that she's a writer worth listening to, even in her weaker efforts.
Unlike several of the other readers, I don't think the book's shortcomings derive from being set in the US rather than India, because CBD has already shown that she can tell stunning American tales in her two short story collections. Rather, I think it's that she's in a transitional mode, reinventing herself as a writer on a different scope. You can see this in her use of more varied and sophisticated techniques--five narrators (one of them omniscent) give the story a very different, less intimate texture than Sister of My Heart. Other voices crowd in through letters from India and assignments from Anju's creative writing class. CBD's authorial gaze spirals outward to take in the expanse of the city and the San Francisco bay area, the larger world that swirls around her characters. She makes pointed reference to ongoing world events, and tries (rather clumsily) to weave the OJ Simpson trial into her plot. On the whole, her voice is more experimental and self-conscious in its address to the reader. Some of these features I loved (particularly the last chapter told in Lalit's voice) and others I found distracting, but on most of them I reserve judgment. I think they'll work better in her next book.
In summary, I wouldn't recommend the book to anyone who isn't already a Divakaruni fan; Sister of My Heart needs no sequel. I would and do, however, encourage anyone to encounter this talented author through her short stories, collected in Arranged Marriage and (my personal favorite of all her books) The Unknown Errors in Her Lives. And I await her next book with curiosity, eager to see how she grows into her new skin.

A Gorgeous Tale

I loved this book. I also thoroughly enjoyed the first part to this story. It continues the story of Anju and Sudha who are now reunited in America. Anju has suffered a miscarriage and her relationship with her husband, Sunil, is fragile at best. When Sudha arrives in the U.S. and lives with Anju and Sunil, old wounds are reopened and new passions flare.
How all three characters grow and learn makes this story worthwhile.
The writing is beautiful, almost lyrical.

Good, but left me wanting...

This book was certainly as compelling as the first -- Sister of My Heart. This author has a talent for artistry with her writing, weaving a tapestry with words.
Beginning where Sister of My Heart left off, with Sudha starting her new life in America despite pleas from an old love for marriage, this book opens with intensity. Anju's husband Sunil has strong feelings for Sudha, and they are reignited when Sudha moves in with child. Anju and Sunil's marriage has been rocky since the loss of their baby, and Sudha's moving in does not help. The reader has to wonder why Anju or Sudha thought it would, or if in fact they knew it might not, but needed certain truths to be revealed.
Sudha tries to build a life for herself and her baby in America, attempting to date, and to find work. However, Sunil has other plans for her. This said, the triangle between these three comes to a pivitol stage, and Sudha moves out on her own, having found work and a place to live. Anju and Sunil also must work to salvage their lives, whatever paths they may take.
Ultimately, this book is about transformation and growth. It is about expectations vs. reality. And it teaches a lot about the Indian culture, as well as what it is like to be immersed into a completely foreign culture. Sudha experiences a lot of transformation as she realizes the freedoms that come with a culture so different from her own.
Again, at the end, I was left wanting for so much more. I am hoping there is a third to this series in the making, and will be disappointed if there is not. There was so much left unanswered. Three lives have yet to be developed in the new paths they've taken.

About the Author
Howard Schilit, Ph.D., CPA, is the founder and chief executive officer of Schilit Forensics LLC. Dr. Schilit is a pioneer in the field of detecting accounting tricks in corporate financial reports that mislead investors. Howard was the founder and CEO of CFRA, a global forensic accounting research organization. He has been a leading spokesman before the US Congress, the SEC, and global media outlets about the causes and early warning signs of accounting tricks in public filings. Dr. Schilit began his career as an Associate Professor of Accounting at American University and continues to teach and lecture all over the world. Dr. Schilit holds his doctorate in Accounting from the University of Maryland.
Jeremy Perler, CFA, CPA, is the Director of Research at Schilit Forensics and co-author of Financial Shenanigans: How to Detect Accounting Gimmicks & Fraud in Financial Reports (3rd edition, 2010). Great Book, but Important Sections of Second Edition Dropped

I should begin by saying that I completely agree with the previous five star reviews. This is a magnificent book, and the second edition had a great influence on my investing. All serious investors should read this.
I would like to draw attention though, to the changes made since the second edition. The second edition described seven basic shenanigans which, for the most part, manipulated earnings and revenue, as these are the headline numbers that the bulk of investors look at. The third edition covers the same shenanigans, though the sections have been re-written, and the examples have been changed and updated. The third edition adds sections on shenanigans to manipulate cash flow numbers (yes, this can be done) and metrics that investors use frequently. The new sections are worth the upgrade to me, though if you read widely in the area, you won't find much new. Mulford and Comiskey's Creative Cash Flow Reporting, for example, covers the same material as the section on cash flow.
Those who haven't read the second edition should be aware that portions of the second edition have been eliminated. The sections on "Problem Areas" and "Looking Back . . . Looking Forward" are gone, but the topics they deal with have either been absorbed into the rest of the text or can be dropped without great consequence. The section on "Techniques for Detecting Shenanigans" has also been dropped, and I believe that this is unfortunate. While some readers may already be familiar with common-size analysis, for example, many investors don't have formal education in accounting and could use the explanation and examples. It was this chapter of the second edition that promped me to create common-size balance sheets and income statements for all potential investments, and I've found the exercise invaluable, both for detection of possible shenanigans and for general understanding the companies I'm researching.
If you are new to this area of stock analysis, or new to accounting, I would recommend buying both the second and third editions. The second edition should be cheap, as used copies of older editions are not usually in high demand. The third edition gives investors more to look out for, but without a systematic way to apply the techniques, I doubt many will put their new found knowledge to good use.

Essential Tool for any Finance/Accounting Professional

As a financial accountant, I have special appreciation for "Financial Shenanigans" by Schilit and Perler. Like the preface mentions, this book truly provides the "post-mortem analysis" it promises. It clearly narrates the most infamous financial reporting failures in history (US, Europe, & Asia), and the lessons such fraudulent mistakes offer those who wish to learn. Not only does it serve as a quick reference for all possible fraudulent methods to date, but also as a review of core financial accounting principles (US GAAP) and basic performance ratio calculations.

In addition, it is intelligently written, and easy to follow and comprehend. More specifically, it also employs humor in a smart, witty manner. It does a great job of drawing in readers who appreciate reading up-to-date, practical accounting/finance material they can apply to their professions (outside of academia). Best of all, it isn't dry, but engaging!

I expect my copy will become worn and dog-eared within a short period of time, as this book has become my most trusted coworker and best companion at the office. I am looking forward to following these two authors and reading more of their upcoming work.

Robert Steele is a former wide receiver for the Dallas Cowboys and a participant in Super Bowl XIII. Robert is CEO of TheEnterpriseZone, providing sales, marketing, and business development consulting in the healthcare, insurance, employee benefits, and financial services markets. Robert is currently working on his second book about his days with the Cowboys. He has also served in the Georgia Legislature as an elected State representative and is a private pilot and an avid golfer. Forgotten Classic with an H.L. Mencken Connection

I discovered this novel after reading H.L. Mencken's back story of its genesis in The Library of America's Story of the Week (#192, "Portrait of an Immortal Soul"). [Incidentally, the LOA's Story of the Week is an email I highly recommend subscribing to, as I look forward to receiving it each Sunday.]

Mencken had received an unsolicited request by an unknown novice writer asking him to read his manuscript and to subsequently offer insights. After initially rejecting this all too common request, the unknown writer badgered away, eventually offering to pay for this service. Mencken relented, read the unwieldy tome, and discovered that although it was in ridiculously poor shape, beneath the flaws was a good deal of potential. He wrote a lengthy response to the unknown writer offering suggestions. Several weeks later the edited version of the book was returned to Mencken, who writes:

"This time I had a genuine surprise. Not only had the unknown followed my suggestions with much intelligence; in addition, once set up on the right track, he had devised a great many excellent improvements of his own. In its new form, in fact, the thing was a very competent and even dexterous piece of writing, and after rereading it from the first word to the last with even keener interest than before, I sent it to Mitchell Kennerley, then an active publisher, and asked him to look through it. Kennerley made an offer for it at once, and eight or nine months later it was published with his imprint. The author chose to conceal himself behind the nom de plume of Robert Steele; I myself gave the book the title of 'One Man.' It came from the press - and straightway died the death. The only favorable review it received was mine in the 'Smart Set.' No other reviewer paid any heed to it. No one gabbled about it. No one, so far as I could make out, even read it. The sale was small from the start, and quickly stopped altogether....To this day the fact fills me with wonder. To this day I marvel that so dramatic, so penetrating and so curiously moving a story should have failed so overwhelmingly....

"For I have never been able to convince myself that I was wrong about it. On the contrary, I am more certain than ever, re-reading it after half a dozen years, that I was right - that it was and is one of the most honest and absorbing human documents ever printed in America. I have called it, following the author, a novel. It is, in fact, nothing of the sort; it is autobiography. More, it is autobiography unadorned and shameless, autobiography almost unbelievably cruel and betraying, autobiography that is as devoid of artistic sophistication as an operation for gall-stones. This so-called Steele is simply too stupid, to ingenious, too moral to lie. He is the very reverse of an artist; he is a born and incurable Puritan - and in his alleged novel he draws the most faithful and merciless picture of an American Puritan that has ever got upon paper."

Mencken's writing about "One Man" intrigued me very much, so I ordered it and just last night finished the book. It held my interest very much, particularly the parts about his father's poor treatment of him as a child and young man, which in many ways is a cautionary tale to parents everywhere. I was most surprised by the number of women the author had rendezvous with, and imagined him an exceedingly handsome fellow, and somewhat shocked at how easily and often he had intimacies with so many ladies. The language of his era gives the work a late 19th century, early 20th century feel. The printing of the book is a bit unusual in that the font size is slightly larger than usual, so although it appears thick it's truly a quick read. There is not hyphenation when words at the ends of sentences break, which is also a bit unusual, but easily overcome.

I'm glad I found this book, an enjoyable diversion with memorable insights.

Many years later Mencken added a note updating the story:

"After the book herein discussed came out I heard nothing more from the author until 1935, when he wrote to me from Wisconsin and then from Chicago. It appeared that he had married, had nine children, and was out of work, and that the whole family was trying to live on a dole of $17.28 a week. He said that he had written another book . . . , but I never heard any more about it.*
