About the Author

William R. Miller, PhD, is Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico. Throughout his career he has developed and evaluated various methods for addiction treatment, including motivational interviewing, behavior therapies, and pharmacotherapies. More generally interested in the psychology of change, Dr. Miller has also focused on the interface of spirituality and psychotherapy. Having authored more than 40 books and 400 professional and scientific articles and chapters, Dr. Miller is listed by the Institute for Scientific Information as one of the world’s most cited scientists.�Alyssa A. Forcehimes, PhD, is a clinical psychologist on the faculty of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center. She coordinates the Southwest Node of the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network, which is located at the University’s Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions. Dr. Forcehimes’s research focuses on processes of motivation for change and on effective methods for disseminating and teaching evidence-based behavioral treatments for addiction to mental health, substance abuse, and health care providers.�Allen Zweben, PhD, is Professor and Associate Dean for Research and Academic Affairs at the Columbia University School of Social Work. Dr. Zweben has been a principal investigator on numerous federally and privately funded behavioral and medication trials, including two landmark studies funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism: Project MATCH, a patient–treatment matching study, and the COMBINE study, a project examining the efficacy of combining pharmacotherapy and psychotherapy interventions for alcohol problems.

I'm so glad this book isn't one of them

One of my biggest fears when reading textbooks is the text would be drier than the Sahara desert. I'm so glad this book isn't one of them.
I rented this book for one of my classes, and I must say, it's informative and actually interesting to read. It offers new perspectives on treating SUD and easy to follow along. I like it so much that I'm actually considering buying it (when I'm back to the labor force and actually earning money again. Don't blame a grad student for being broke).

Invaluable Resource

This is the ultimate, up to date text for all addictions professionals. I was fortunate to begin using this book right after it was published for teaching my classes in Substance abuse, and use it as a reference point for information and where to find additional information. This is one of the best books I've found in my 20 years as an addictions professional.

I really enjoy reading this book. It is required for a course I'm taking at school, but actually doesn't feel like I'm reading a textbook at all. Easy to follow, all the while detailed information.

The book contains valuable information about a specialized area of applied mathematics. The material presented in this book is applicable to problems involving quantum and electromagtnetic scattering at high frequencies. In the area of radar technology, the radar cross-section of a target is calculated using asymptotic evaluation of Fourier integrals that appear in the final form of the electric and magnetic field vectors following a solution to the appropriate boundary value problem, starting with Maxwell's equations.
To study the book, the reader must have had course on complex variables upto and including residue theory, infinite series, analytic continuation, conformal mapping and multivalued functions, plus a introductory knowledge of ordinary differential equations.
Without discussing the contents of each chapter, I can only comment that they are most lucid and intellectually satisfying; in particular chaps. 7 and 9 are most useful to practical problems
The contents of chapters 7 and 9 are widely applicable in various electrical engineering problems - short-pulse radars, high-frequnecy scattering, antenna theory and the like. The main advantage of using these asymptotic methods is that they reduce spectral integrals stemming from potential theory (Green's functions) are to " almost " closed form solutions that are not exact but computationally extremely helpful. In many cases, for example EM scattering by a circular cylinder, numerical results can only be obtained if asymptotic methods are applied at high frequencies. The use of asymptotic methods in engineering computation is primarily to reduce the c.p.u. time by several orders of magnitude as compared to exact calculations. This allows faster and more efficient solution to problems. The book is well organized and there are enough homework problems for the interested reader. A must pre-requisite for understanding the topic(s) is a reasonably good grasp of the theory functions of a complex variable, as mentioned at the begining of this review.

Not a bad start to this series

Not a bad start to this series, it was kinda boring though. I enjoyed Gabriel the most, he was snarky and seriously funny, I was hoping to experience the birth before this one ended, but that didn't happen. I have a very good idea who a lot of the future couples are though, so that will be interesting.

Alpha Bourne is the first book in the Primal Heat Series by Lynn Hagen. I really liked how this series starts. There are a lot of characters I would like to get to know better in future books too. There is some political world building in this book too. I like that because we get to see how the pack works. Who does what and such.
The love story in play in this book is between Talyn Bourne the Alpha, well he has been an alpha for about year now. He wears the dog tags of his older brother who died serving his country. Talyn used to be young wild and free, now he knows his responsibilities. But he still has a little bad boy inside him too.
Gabriel Taylor is sent from another pack or coalition as they are called in this book. He is sent to get Talyn’s Omega. Talyn doesn’t want to give him or his Omega up. Especially when Talyn finds out that Gabriel is his mate.
Gabriel is funny, smart, little clumsy. I like his sass. He is stronger than he appears and very loyal too. His family will just make you laugh. I know I want to know more about the twins now. Those two will be hell on wheels to whomever they mate with.
Over all I really enjoyed this book. There is a great love story that had chemistry and drew me in. Also though there is a great story inside this book. With potential for more in the future. It is a very easy first book to understand, not too much thrown in to bog me down. I really loved it. I hope to read more in the future. MM, were wolves is my favorite genre so bring them on!

Alpha Bourne has started off another wonderful series from Lynn Hagen. This is the first book in the Primal Heat Series. Tayln has always been carefree and wild. When his brother dies, he must step up and take full responsible as Alpha. What does he do when another from a rival pack comes demanding his omega? Tayln does not feel that Gabriel is telling him everything about why he enter his land. What will the Alpha do with his mate and his half lies. Gabriel has no choice but to do what he must to protect his family, even his crazy cousin. I love this story and cannot waiting to see more of this series. Especially the crazy twins.
