About the Author
Manami Okazaki is a freelance journalist who has been covering tattoo culture for a number of publications for nearly a decade. Her tattoo related work can be seen in the Wall Street Journal’s Scene Asia, the Japan Times newspaper, Cover magazine, Skin Deep, Tatowier, Inked (US), Skin and Ink, Tattoo Master, Tattoo Life, Bizarre, Asian Geographic, various in-flight magazines, and most of the local English language magazines in Japan. She produced and authored Japanese Buddhism x Horiyoshi III and Tattoo in Japan. She has also given tattoo related talks at the Foreign Correspondents Club, Japan.

This book will look at the tattooing tradition that is a continuation of the Edo period tattoo culture.

It was after WW2 that the yakuza, or Japanese mafia proliferated, as did their love of tattoos. Ostensibly yakuza are offshoots of the otokodate, as well as the kabuki mono rebels of Edo, but became increasingly powerful in Japanese society, becoming involved with extortion, the sex industry, weapons smuggling, as well as legitimate business. Yakuza literally means 8-9-3 which is a losing hand of a gambling game, the objective of which is to get 19. The yakuza would get tattooed, sometimes under order from a superior, to prove their adherence to the group and as a symbol of loyalty and bravado. Some groups even necessitated it, and getting tattooed was a kind of initiation rite. However, despite what the majority of Japanese people believe, there has always been a large contingency of artisans, carpenters and other shokunin who were fully tattooed, as well as tattoo masters who refuse to tattoo underworld members as well. Could be Better

I paid �57 for this book in the UK (almost $100 US)

For that, I would expect a hardback masterpiece!

Now I know this is paperback and I don't mind that but contents wise, it's really not that different from other Horimono books on the market. The photos are OK but I would not say stunning. The interviews with the artists always seem to ask questions about Yakuza - who cares? I'd rather hear questions about the art of tattooing; decisions about patterns, colours, motifs etc.

I've so far only read 3 interviews with my favourite artists. They were mildly revealing but not much depth was covered.

Still, if you are into Horimono then this book must be added to the collection.

I intend to get one done one day so preparing the tattoo in my mind is of utmost importance! This book has helped with confirming which artist I prefer and it also has enough picture examples to give lots of ideas.

Starred Review. Huizenga has created some of the most remarkable comics of recent years, and this volume collects stories published in anthologies and random comic books. Huizenga's work, drawn in a deceptively simple and quietly expressive cartoon line, is marked by a focus on philosophical quandaries. Nearly all of his stories take place in an anonymous suburbia, and his everyman protagonist, Glenn Ganges, is a likable character possessed of a Charlie Brown–like calm. The strongest story in this book, "28th Street," is a fanciful meditation on fertility in which Ganges turns to supernatural solutions for his all too corporeal problems. Another excellent story, "Jeepers Jacobs," explores the nature of heaven and hell through the fictionalized work of a theologian protagonist. Another story, "Green Tea," is an adaptation of a 19th-century thriller. It's quite a range, and Ganges's thoughtful wonderment at all of his experiences opens up the world to the reader. Huizenga is an inclusive, empathic artist who communicates without lectures—rather, he simply shows the world as it might be and allows us, through Ganges, to experience it with him. His excellent ear for dialogue and measured prose style accomplish this without flash. These are wonderfully considered, profound comics. (Oct.)

Glenn Ganges' sober countenance has peered out from Huizenga's philosophical comics tales since his introduction to the graphics universe in the early 1990s. In Huizenga's largest collection featuring the blank-faced protagonist, Ganges is a quizzical mouthpiece for the artist's observations on the startling and surrealistic nature of the modern world. In "Green Tea," Ganges recounts an episode from university days, when a tea-fueled research project on hallucinations triggered his own visionary experience and had him digging through a nineteenth-century psychiatrist's papers for explanations. "The Curse" follows Ganges' mission to steal the plumage of a "feathered ogre" and remove a curse that is keeping him and his wife childless. Other tales disclose hidden connections between missing children and Sudanese lost boys and unearth surprising details about starlings. Huizenga's masterful, multitextured drawing style proves equally suited to depicting rainstorms sweeping through mini-marts and landscapes in the style of classical Japanese paintings. An Evening with Glenn Ganges

Glenn Ganges sounds just like someone you probably know. He's in his mid-to-late 20s, slim build, slightly balding, and lives with his wife in a smaller American metropolis. They've been trying to have a baby for some time, but without success. He enjoys reading about the unknown, and thinking about the little things in life that most of us bypass with barely a second thought. On the surface, Glenn could be that friend you had from college - the one you used to study with late at night over coffee at an all-night diner (you remember that guy, don't you?).

Except for one thing: Glenn Ganges is a fictional character in Kevin Huizenga's comics repertoire. This is a simple, obvious fact which is easily overlooked throughout Mr. Huizenga's latest book, Curses. Glenn's just got that kind of a personality. Bigger than life? No. Stands out in a crowd? Not in the least. But he is charming in ways that don't exact great amounts of understanding from the reader. That is to say, the reader has known Glenn Ganges throughout his or her life, and it is wholly natural to allow him back in.

What Mr. Huizenga does with such a regular-guy-type character is amazing, though, and proves to be the strength of Curses. The reader isn't exposed to thinly-veiled autobiography or self-indulgence (as is the case with Bren Collins' 6 Ways from Sunday franchise), but to worldly stories that could come from anywhere. "28th Street," for instance, is a stirring Glenn Ganges story which originated as a folk tale from Italy, and has been filtered through Hometown, America for the reader's consumption ("Hometown, America" in this case happens to be Grand Rapids, MI - perhaps the epitome of any North American city of moderate size). A veritable mythology is acknowledged, formulated, and shared in such a way that we can all get it, not just on a local or regional level.

The book has heart, and Mr. Huizenga emphasizes this with his superb selection of non-verbal images. The case which makes itself is within the short story "The Hot New Thing," a satirical view of how people tend to analyze and anticipate those things which we are told by media are The Hot New Thing. Glenn and his wife Wendy are just like us in that respect. They talk about The Hot New Thing for days, follow trade journals and popular magazines featuring the unspecified object, and finally attend the initial unveiling of said item. And here's where the humanity comes into play: On their way into the Expo, Glenn and Wendy become so wrapped up in the anticipatory moments leading up to the pinnacle moment in their lives (The Hot New Thing's revelation!), they actually hold hands as they approach - they've fallen in love all over again.

Curses is a book every bit as profound as anything by Chris Ware (Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Boy on Earth) or Jeffrey Brown (Clumsy, and I Am Going To Be Small), and sometimes surpasses them with regards to accessibility to the general readership. Each of the stories can be read independent of the others, but there is a linear feel of coherence to them as they are presented. There truly is a wide range of emotion explored throughout the book (not just the typical "joys and pains" of a human life, but also the irrational fears and the common curiousity between us all).

Finding a Glenn Ganges story in another publication (such as the Canadian TIME Magazine) is always a special treat. Finding a collection of them compiled between a hardcover is truly exciting.

Brilliant and simple

As poignant and dead center an evocation of suburban life at the turn of the millennium as anyone could hope for. Sort of a post-modern O'Henry (though it's much more fun than that makes it sound), Huizenga skewers the absurdities and obsessions of modern life without ever losing his compassion for his characters. A real winner! Glenn Ganges IS everyman.

Kevin Huizenga, Curses (Drawn and Quarterly, 2006)

I think that, were Glenn Ganges a real person (and I believe that he is, at least partially, Kevin Huizenga himself), that he and I would get along famously. Ganges seems to take an approach to the world very similar to my own, and we have things in common I never expected to find I had in common with, shall we say, an artist's rendition. Thus, I will freely admit to bias in my review of Curses, Huizenga's first book of Glenn Ganges stories. (A second, Ganges, was released the next year by Fantagraphics.)

The Ganges stories here vary greatly in length, from a three-page quickie that appeared in Time magazine to a forty-page adaptation of a Sheridan LeFanu story ("Green Tea", for those keeping track). Ganges and his wife are the only solid connectors between the stories, but incidents and characters crop up again and again in different stories, so the volume has more of a feel of coherence than it otherwise would. Much of it reads rather like a magical-realist memoir; there's a realistic setup (e.g., Glenn and his wife trying to have a kid...) that leads to a thoroughly absurd conclusion (...and the only way to do that is to steal a feather from an ogre who lives somewhere beneath 28th Street), or vice versa. It's a good deal of fun, and Huizenga's somewhat minimal drawing style is adaptable to just about anything (and there's some wonderful versatility to be found between these pages). Definitely worth a look. ****

This is a great comprehensive book about Vietnam. It also includes maps, common words in vietnam, immunizations to get etc. Well done Lonely Planet. I especially loved the details of the cost of admission, hours and days of specific places of interests.

Okay, but not as good as the first one

People hoping to gain an understanding of how to write comic books really couldn't find a better source than "Panel One," the previous volume edited by Nat Gertler collecting comic book scripts and roughs by various creators. "Panel Two" is more of the same, but not as polished. There are more of the "thumbnail" versions of scripts, and some that are so detailed it's almost like reading the comic itself. Standouts in this book are Gail Simone's hilarious script for "Killer Princesses" and Scott McCloud's thumbnail script for "Zot!" (This was one of the super-detailed ones, it had me wanting to find the issue that followed it to find out how the story ended!) Others are interesting, such as the classic "Fatman" script -- but that one, unfortunately, was missing several pages. It was interesting to see the juxtoposition of the original script with the finished pages, however, so we were able to compare what changes the artist had made.
Overall, though, this book doesn't really add much or tell you anything you didn't know after reading "Panel One." It's an interesting addition, and certainly not a bad purchase, but it's not something you need or that helps as much as the previous book.

This was an easy reference book to read. This book provides MORE examples of actual scripts and the processes, which makes it valuable to me! I bought it to go along with "Panel One", which I also enjoyed, but Panel Two would be my favorite.

This is the story of the manufacture, development and usage of one of the most famous submachine Guns ever produced by a British Firm Designed at the end of WW2. The Sterling Guns saw limited use on a trial basis, carried by paratroopers during the battle of Arnhem; since the British Forces had plenty of Sten guns at the time, and tests between the two types of weapon were inconclusive, it was not until 1953, that with a few adjustments, the Weapon was formally adopted by the British Army.

Whilst not the most accurate of weapons, it was extremely useful in urban warfare and regarded as one of the most reliable submachine Guns throughout the world until it was withdrawn from use in 1988. A total of over 400,000 were manufactured. Sterling built them for the British armed forces and for overseas sales. The Sterling Guns was used as the basis for the weapons used by Storm Troopers in the Star Wars films.

in where Edmiston was dismissed as a bad business person

For the definitive book on the Sterling SMG, please read, "The Guns Of Dagenham" by Peter Laidler and David Howroyd (Collector Grade Publications) This book will give you every single detail that "The Sterling Years" can't.
James Edmiston bought Sterling when he was in his late 20s! Quite unbelievable to comprehend he became involved with the small arms trade at his age, and that he (sometimes) successfully circumvented the "Ordnance Ring" and the follies and foibles of all governments pertaining to in-and-export licences, devious politics and the general day-to-day running of the small arms trade. Edmiston and his predecessor, Kenton Redgrave stayed away from the scandals that the arms trade is usually associated with. Towards the end of his book, it becomes painfully clear that the British Government deliberately torpedoed Sterling. They did the same to H&K, which they owned for a while - totally mismanaged it - and then sold it again as NOT to be overtly associated with the gun trade. That same government also did the same to the Royal Small Arms in Enfield with the equally disastrous British service rifle, the SA80 - stifled and stymied by successions of managements and their suicidal cultures. One of the guns mentioned briefly in this book - the Ingram SMG - DID suffer from repeated mismanagement,sadly culminating in the eventual demise of this jewel of a gun.
I did read a "The Sterling Years" review somewhere, in where Edmiston was dismissed as a bad business person. If he was, than this book does not suggest it.
Global armaments industries are all-powerful consumers of people and their dreams. It seems fine to produce landmines (of which the UK is the largest manufacturer) fighter aircraft, tanks, missiles and everything else associated with destroying people on an industrial scale. The production and sales of relatively minor small arms - like the Sterling - is subject to heavy criticism and legislation. The venerable AK47 is also part of the small arms nomenclature - but let's not go there right now!
This little book is an interesting read and gives some interesting insight to James Edmiston's journey.

I must admit, after reading many reviews of Richard Clayderman's piano transcriptions, I was prepared for the worst. Surprisingly, the arrangements are beautiful, and challenging. If you like hearing Clayderman's unique style, this book is for you.

Great Book - Glad I Bought It

I was on the fence about this book due to a couple bad reviews. I'm really glad I didn't listen and went ahead and bought it. It really shows how different expectations can taint a person's impression of a book (good and bad).

First off, I've always liked JBL products and am a fan of vintage (and modern) Hi-Fi equipment. This book as described in the title covers JBL's 60 yrs of history. The key factor to kept in mind is this is a book commissioned by JBL to celebrate their 60 years of successes (and even discusses some low points). As such there is care to present the corporate image and products in a positive manor. It has a very nice, polished look and feel with a lot of pictures both color and vintage B&W that details important personalities and product milestones through JBL's history up to the point of writing. It is 7/8" thick, printed on glossy stock and chocked full of pictures -- probably hundreds of pictures, including several cut-aways illustrating key features of various new driver technologies JBL pioneered, engineers, etc. You might say there are more pictures than text, which could be the source of some the other critical reviews.

As I said before, the book is more about milestones than it is a comprehensive product catalog and specs. Therefore one should go into it with that perspective and note that not EVERY model of speakers JBL has ever prduced is guaranteed to appear inside. For instance, the "Series" of JBL speakers I own are a set of Studio L 6" bookshelf speakers and other H/T speakers. There is a section outlining the new home theatre market and JBL's product offering to satisfy that market. Within that chapter is a whole page dedicated to the Studio L series with 2 nice pictures illustrating SOME of the line ...and a whole one or two sentences that say something to the effect: "The Studio L line was produced for the new Home Theatre Market and had an elegent design." That's a paraphrase, not a quote. The picture doesn't show ALL of the speakers that were available in the Studio L line. One picture shows a pair of tower speakers in cherry, the other picture shows a corner of a room with a partial home theatre set-up that includes: a subwoofer, pair of tower speakers (in black) and a wall mount center speaker below the TV. Missing speakers from that series one could have purchased back then is: A smaller down driven subwoofer (in various finished), a smaller center channel speaker that was available that year, the 6" bookshelf speakers like I own, 8" bookshelf speakers that were available in either ash, cherry or black at the same time, and I think there was one other speaker available like a shorter version of a tower speaker. No pictures of the Ash finish were shown even though I felt it was a very attractive finish at the time. That's ok with me. While I would like to have had more information on the the Studio L speakers, it really is touching on the milestones of that series and I didn't buy the book to pad my ego. But I think some of the criticism in other Amazon reviews comes from omissions like these. On the other hand, a few key speaker designs from the 70's and 80's that pushed JBL to the forefront of the speaker industry DO seem to illustrate more of the full line available back then. In some cases a whole page or pages of pictures and several paragraphs of text are devoted to illustrating what made these speakers key to the market at the time, technological improvements and so on. Again, the book is about milestones, not a technical catalog of EVERY JBL speaker cabinet, size, etc.

I really don't get some of the negative criticism of this book. To say most of the pictures and old ads could be viewed online for free and therefore the book is a waste of money, seems like a blatent false statement. I have scoured the internet and JBL's website and, yes, there is a minor amount of duplication and a few similar pictures you may be able to see, but you aren't going to get the interpretation and historical insight. This book is a coffee table quality book (Sans the hard cover and wide pages) and if you are into vintage or current Hi-Fi products and like to read books about hi-fi products, and like glossy pictures and history, there is a lot ot like about it.

How would I go about making future editions even better? I would love to see even MORE information, a deep dive of the factory construction process (mass production challenges and so fourth), a little insight into the distribution pathways and challenges (like retail v.s. internet), more information on the decision-making processes how certain technologies were settled on v.s. other competing design considerations at the time, more car audio discussion and a few more pictures of famous musicians using JBL products. Also for the 2nd edition, I believe an added section at the back of the book devoted to cataloging ALL the vintage JBL speakers with pictures, published specs, cabinet cut-aways (where available), a short blurb below each product and sales qty numbers would be great. I'd also like to see a little discussion on the competition at various points in history, how JBL stacked up, and things they attempted to do to set themselves apart. For instance, 'Here's a picture of JBL xxx series compared to KEF xx series. Both were ear pleasing, but JBL increased use of Quadrinium Magnatite based drivers provided extra punch at the high end for less money'. A competitive review would be nice. Anyway, I think a lot of readers would yearn for more information like I've outlined above. I'd buy THAT edition in a heartbeat.

In summary, this would be the perfect book for a vintage stereo enthusiest or collector to read up on JBL history, milestones and keep next to their listening equipment for them or their guests to puruse.

Wonderful book full of all of JBL's most notable speakers and a fascinating general history of audio in America. If you are a Jbl speaker freak like me it is a must have. Well priced as I could have paid three times as much in Australia for this.

When an old sea captain by the name of Billy Bones dies at the Admiral Benbow Inn on the west coast of England during the mid-1700s, Jim Hawkins, the innkeeper’s son, and his mother discover a treasure map among his belongings. Jim shows the map to some local acquaintances, Dr. Livesey and Squire Trelawney and together they plan an expedition to find the treasure. Together they set sail aboard the “Hispaniola” led by Captain Smollett in search of Treasure Island. Amongst the crew are numerous former pirates, who are led to mutiny by “Long John” Silver, a one-legged Bristol tavern-keeper who has been hired as the ship’s cook. Written in the late 19th century, Robert Louis Stevenson’s “Treasure Island” dramatically depicts maritime life, rich with all its perils, in an adventure that investigates the nature of good and evil itself. This edition is illustrated by Elenore Plaisted Abbot, includes an introduction and notes by Clayton Hamilton, and a biographical afterword.

Stand Out is Outstanding

I read this book in one weekend. As a small business owner, I have found too much hype and not much substance when it comes to online marketing. Mr. Fletcher, cuts through, and clarifies what I need to do, to help promote and grow my business. This easy to read book, is for those of us ready to do something, but don't know how to go about online marketing, Mr. Fletcher gives us our plan, our playbook, to more effectively market our company online. I wish I had found this book, before wasting so much time and money on others.

Impressive and Immediately Useful

There are tons of "Internet Marketing" types of books out there. Stand Out is the only book I have read that I would recommend.

Aaron Fletcher is a marketer, but you can also tell he is about driving the business through measurable systems. He goes much deeper than fancy methods for getting clicks and leads, provides no nonsense advice and guidance on exactly how to Stand Out in a sea of white noise.

Fletcher's foundation of Mindset, Market, Message, Media and Metrics make the whole process simple to follow and implement.

After reading Stand Out, I was finding myself wanting more and knowing that there is more from this author. He is more than a marketer, he is a businessman who realizes that bringing the prospect to your door is just part of the battle... albeit an important part. There is a lot of solid advice that any online marketer or bricks and mortar business can use to not only survive but thrive with a fortified online strategy.

I look forward to Aaron Fletcher's future work and hope to work with him directly one day... soon.

Good start but falls short of the promise of a real marketing plan.

I would say this book is a good start if you are a total novice to websites and very basic SEO. However, the book promises to create a marketing successful marketing plan. It creates a website, some basic SEO, and then content marketing through blogging. Then stops. This is another book created by someone selling a marketing product online and telling you how they are selling it to you. Again it is a good start for a complete novice but don't expect a successful marketing campaign with it.
