Contemporary World Regional Geography, by Michael Bradshaw, Joseph Dymond, George White, Elizabeth Chacko

World Regional Geography is an exciting science that encompasses a wealth of information regarding geographical landscapes, cultural traditions, population patterns and economic resources. Contemporary World Regional Geography, 4e provides a current, balanced geographical study of world issues through analysis of ten world regions and the countries in each. The authors integrate the themes of "global connections" and "local voices" and utilize a consistent structure within each chapter. Each chapter is organized to begin with environmental issues of the region followed by historical geography, which lead into the sections on the modern global era. The latter part of each chapter continues to be devoted to subregional subdivisions.

Very Informative and Well Researched
By Idip31
I think we can all agree that this is the kind of book that you only purchase for a college or high school class and not for personal reading. That aside, I have to say this is one of the better geography books I have used in school.

The book is divided into 13 chapters with upwards of 11 sections per chapter. Each chapter follows a general path of review and while for some this may seem predictable, it helps you plan for the upcoming lessons as either the teacher or the student.

Each section does have a few keywords, these are important to review because it seems that any tests that may be generated from the publisher seem to include these as test questions. It is disappointing, as a student, not to see any multiple choice questions at the end of the sections. Mainly because it's less practice for possible test questions. Instead, you'll find "Questions to Think About" at the end of the chapters. These questions are more "Thinking Critically" questions. They are great to review for essay questions though.

Overall, it's a great book. If you read it... you will learn, a lot. You might even learn something cool that you didn't know before.

Academic Achievement
By Ms. Amie Rudolph
This was a very helpful and insightful book. Outside of a requirement for class, I would not likely have chosen this book to read on my own. Having taken a course for which this book was a requirement has generated new interest in ancient civilizations for me. The "Point/Counterpoint" sections are very informative, and help with the understanding of the material. The questions in the "Questions to think About" section are geared to help the student progressively learn the information in the sections, as opposed to having a long list of questions at the end of the chapter. all in all, a good read, one I would recommend to prospective students.

Informative but boring
By EJS
This book is a) very informative and b) very boring. Content-wise this is probably one of the better textbooks I've read; it gives a good overview of the kinds of things you'd want to know about a particular area (culture, geographic features, etc.) as well as some of the major political and economic issues of the area. It has helpful summaries of major issues and controversies (e.g. arguments for and against the E.U.). I definitely learned a lot from this book. It also contextualizes the major areas in terms of their significance in the overall region and world.

With that said, the presentation could've been better. While it's very well organized and has good charts, graphs, maps, etc., it lacks narrative and a lot of the book is pretty boring. While you get the facts about an area, you don't necessarily get much of a sense of what it's actually like to live or be there. I think I would've retained the information better if the presentation had been more engaging and I certainly would've been a lot more excited to read it. In some ways it seems analogous to the "names, dates, and places" method of teaching history.

This is not a minor flaw in my opinion; the purpose of a textbook isn't just to transfer facts, it's to get you excited about the topic. You should want to learn more about the topic once you're done. (I hope people don't stop reading here, but regardless of what you think about his politics, I think that's one of the reasons Bill O'Reilly's history books have been so popular).

I kept this book after I finished the class because it's so informative and because it makes a great reference. However, it's probably not the most engaging read.
