About the Author
Aaron Hillegass, a former employee at NeXT and Apple, has nearly two decades experience programming and teaching Objective-C, Cocoa, and, more recently, iOS. Aaron is the author of Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X and co-author of iOS Programming: The Big Nerd Ranch Guide. Both best-sellers, these books have helped many people develop and enhance their programming skills. In 2001, Aaron founded Big Nerd Ranch and began developing intensive courses that teach programming in a focused, distraction-free environment. He is currently working on site plans and blueprints for the new Ranch to be located in Atlanta, GA.

Mikey Ward is a senior iOS and Cocoa instructor at Big Nerd Ranch. Mikey also convenes the Atlanta chapter of CocoaHeads, a worldwide group devoted to discussion of Apple's frameworks for writing Mac and iOS applications.

Big Nerd Ranch is a unique software engineering and training company where monastic principles drive technological development. Read This Book if you actually want to UNDERSTAND Objective-C

I have attempted to read probably close to 100 computer books on all sorts of languages and topics, none of them compare to how well this one is written. I'm currently only 37% through this book, but loving it. I've attempted to learn Objective-C a number of times over the past couple of years, mainly just to know it, but also in hopes of diving into IOS development. I've tried to read other books as well as videos on Lynda.com and pluralsite.com. I'm often left so confused on why I'm typing something and the book/video tells me not to worry about understanding it right now, I'll eventually understand. With this book, when it says not to worry about something for the time being, it ends up covering it as soon as I need to know it and in a way that I can understand.

As I've been reading this book, I've felt that I should actually take the time to write a review, but thought I'd wait until I was finished, just in case I actually found a typo in a code sample, I haven't yet. However I'm currently reading chapter 19 that covers properties and felt compelled to write the review right now. In previous books/videos, they've talked about properties, I had no idea what was all going on with them and felt they must not be very important based on the ways they'd been presented. In chapter 18, Aaron teaches you about instance variables, getters and setters. You end up declaring them in the header and implementing them in the .m file and using them in the main() function. He teaches you about recommended naming of these variables and methods and then in chapter 19 shows you that declaring a property takes care of creating instance variables, header declarations and implementations of the getters and setters. I now actually understand what @property does in a header file.

This is the first book I've read by Aaron Hillegass and the Big Nerd Ranch, but I plan on reading the rest of them. I can't say enough good stuff about this book and author.

OK, but not as amazing as the reviews seem to indicate

I bought this based on all the great reviews - I expected a GREAT book. And since it was the 2nd, revised edition, any rough spots or areas that needed more explanation from the 1st edition would be taken care of. And since there's a BNR forum dedicated to this book by the book's publisher, surely any errors found in the book would be documented there, as well as anything that changed with the newer version of X-code.

But I was pretty disappointed. There are gaps where the book seems to assume you know something it never told you. You log into the forum and there are other users just as confused. But there's no "official" answer from the publisher or the author to settle it. Many of the examples have changed slightly with Xcode 6 - I would have expected there to be a (sticky) errata in the forum updating that, but there's not. There are several knowledgeable forum members who provide a lot of help with most of the issues that arise, but I expected something more official.

To be fair, this book has a really big goal - to try to teach Objective C to people that don't even know C. So I knew there would be areas where coverage would be light and I'd need to supplement with other sources (Stack Overflow, wikis, Apple's documentation, etc.). But there are sections that seem to be less clear/more frustrating than they could have been.

Informative but discrepancies from current version of XCode

I have done most of the chapters in the book now. For the most part it is well written and I like the structure and flow of the book. I would have given it four stars had there not been errors in the book and sections where the SDK and the book just don't agree anymore. I understand that Xcode and the SDK can change at anytime, but its really really frustrating for someone learning the language and development environment to not be able to get the examples to work by following the books instructions. I have found work arounds for most of the discrepancies, but chapter 32 where you write your first Cocoa Application is completely different from what seems to be possible in Xcode. I have a computer science degree and excellent grades and its been a struggle when the code differs from the book. I can only imagine how difficult it would be for people who never programmed before. That said, I haven't found a better alternative in book form. I will probably try the Stanford YouTube videos and maybe take a class to supplement this.

Esther Cameron is one of the founding Directors of innovative, niche change consultancy Integral Change Consulting Ltd, where she specializes in complex organizational change projects that support moves towards high performance. Previously a lecturer in Change Management for the University of Bristol, she has been collecting and experimenting with approaches to change across different levels of organizational systems for 25 years. This has involved work in the UK, mainland Europe, North America, South Africa and South East Asia.�

Not What I Was Looking For...

What I was looking for was an implementation or field guide for the practitioner. While this text promises to be "A complete guide to the models, tools, and techniques of organizational change" it lacks practical steps for implementing any of the several models it discusses, which was a big disappointment. It's best use would be as a good reference for a college level survey of the various styles and methods of the many change management models out there. If you want to hold forth on the relative merits of various change management models at your next social gathering, this is your text. If you're looking for nuts and bolts on how to actually implement and sustain a cultural change, look elsewhere.

an Indispensable Classic for Change Management Consultants

Undoubtedly, Mike and Esther made great efforts to consolidate and refine many change management schools of thought and practices in one classic text, in an amazingly comprehensive and structured way. I do highly recommend this reference to anybody (novice or expert) who wants to know more or work professionally in this highly complicated and convoluted area: Organizational Change Management. The appeal of this book lies in its comprehensiveness, as it provides the full landscape of change management, instead of advocating or supporting one school without regards for others. The theoretical part of the book is highly refined and illuminating. The practical part is illustrating, although it was a bit rambling for me. Things I would like the book to contain in future editions are:
- The role of mindfulness programs in improving individual change.
- the Spiral Dynamics model of change (Don Beck and Chris Cowan).
- Prosci change management methodologies (e.g. Prosci 3-steps change management process, ADKAR Model, etc.).

All in all, it is one of the most insightful books that I have ever read.

5E DM Screen: A Tribute to Whitespace

This is not your father's DM screen, one densely packed with charts like IRS filing instructions. Here the D&D crew takes a different tack with this product, instead offering us an archipelago of tables floating in impressionistic space, like a Monet or Gogan. It's all part of the new paradigm to support the "three pillars of adventure", which sounds good on paper (huh, that's kind of an odd phrase...) yet like mom's inadequately seasoned home cooking, leaves one slightly unfulfilled.

So, going left-to-right, the first panel is a bunch of tables for randomly rolling NPCs: mannerisms, habits and even names. Panel number two and half of number three are dedicated to conditions - this is lifted right out of the PHB, cartoons and all. This could have easily been just a half panel, even with large type. The remainder to the right is things one traditionally finds in a DM screen: encounter distances, mechanical effects of different lighting, etc. Also a substantial part of panel four has tables for generating random dungeon trinkets. No standard weapon table (easily one of the best things to include in a DM screen, trust me) nor a lot of other tables that would have been useful. Well, there's always photocopies and paperclips, I suppose.

Construction: Solid. Thick cardboard wrapped in that stuff the core books are covered with. Will easily survive until 6th Edition.

Too much art, not enough data.

I'm a fairly recent D&D player, only having begun the hobby in 4th Edition. Now that 5 is out, my gaming group has fallen in love with it. I've been eagerly awaiting the DM screen and having fewer reference notes and books cluttering the area. This DM screen...simply does not suffice. I'll use it, but the information is rather basic and far too much space is taken up by art and whitespace.

Don't get me wrong, I love some good art. I just don't want it on the DM side of the DM screen. When I'm running a game, I need data. The screen consists of 4 panels. Each panel is about the size of a 8.5x11 piece of paper (landscape orientation). If all the art was grouped together, I'd estimate that about 2/3 of a panel is taken up. Then there are the margins. They're huge! There's so much space that could have been used to hold more information. For instance, I would have loved to have baseline monster stats handy for those times that I need to improvise an enemy. Some prices for a night at an inn and such? I could have used that too. Such things could have fit if they weren't concerned about the DM side of the screen looking pretty.

Now with all of that said, the DM screen isn't AWFUL. It does contain some useful information. Here's what you're getting:

- Panel 1: NPC Generation. Tables you can use to roll quick personalities, ideals, flaws, names, etc.
- Panel 2: Conditions (Part 1). If you happen to forget how invisibility works or the penalties for blindness, this is where you look.
- Panel 3: Conditions (Part 2), Cover, Light, and difficulties. Half of this panel finishes off explaining the 14-15 conditions a player may have. (Yes, it took 1.5 panels for this.) Then the other half covers some useful information like cover, obscured vision, difficulty class numbers, and which skills belong to which abilities.
- Panel 4: More miscellaneous information. Travel pace, distances of sight and sound, a random event table you can roll if you need a random event, some basic guidelines for damage by level tier (1-4, 5-10, etc.), etc.

This screen isn't BAD. It just isn't all that GOOD. If you need a screen, it certainly wouldn't hurt to have this at the table. It just won't cut it for my own quick-reference needs. I'll continue to have to have some papers and bookmarked books nearby at all times. Compared to the 4th edition DM screen, this one is a disappointment.

A well-made screen that focuses on most of the right things

Ah... the Dungeon Master's screen. A DM's bastion of privacy when rolling the dice or referencing maps. I have seen and owned a lot of different ones over the years - including having fashioned several of my own as well. With the handful of new Dungeons & Dragons materials released over the last year, it was only a matter of time until we received a new DM screen as well.

The DM screen serves three basic functions. It needs to have relevant data on the Dungeon Master's side to serve as a quick reference, it needs to be tall and wide enough to obscure the eyes of overly curious players and lastly it has to look the part. Yes, that is a very cosmetic item and the least important of the three, but I pretty DM screen does in fact help to set the mood, even if just a little bit. I actually had several over the years and would often pick mine based on the campaign or type of adventure I had planned as much for what the players would be staring at as the statistics on my side of the veil.

This particular screen is very attractive, with lots and oranges as a mighty dragon adorns the front right side while various characters populate the left side. It is very much in-line with the artwork that has been featured on the covers of the recent books and starter sets. With a wider landscape design that folds in three different places, and not just two, this screen can wall off a fairly substantial bit of real estate at the end of the table. Additionally the build quality of the screen is solid and durable. There might be some concerns about the height, and that is a matter of preference I suppose. It is low enough that I can reach over it easily enough when I need to. I have had three panel screens before that were more of a portrait view and I had a tendency to reach around the sides of those as needed. Unless your players are practically in your lap, the roughly eleven inches of height should be enough to discourage roaming eyeballs while giving you plenty of space to operate.

The information on the back is probably the most divisive matter when a DM is choosing their screen. Almost every DM I know modifies the information available in some form or another to suit their needs. I prefer to keep my screens in nice condition, so I tend to have sticky notes draped from the top or a couple of index cards propped up on the inside in places to keep relevant information at my fingertips that the screen itself might not provide.

This particular screen seems more focused on the interactions aspect of the game. There are references to combat, skill checks and how to generate an NPC very quickly, but the combat definitely receives the short shrift here as those looking for classic armor class types of tables commonly found in older screens such as Second Edition will come away disappointed. Obviously never every stat is going to fit on the back and while some DMs prefer to have the combat heavy stats, I actually am quite good with the tables focused on character interactions. Perhaps that is due to my style of play where I tend to know combat rules very well by memory and find moments of creative inspiration more useful, but by and large I like the numbers presented.

Aside from the content, the data on the back should be easy to read. This is usually managed in two parts - first by the text size and font as well as how it is organized. This screen handles both aspects quite well. As with any new screen, there is a brief adjustment period as the DM familiarizes themselves with what is printed on the back, but I was quite comfortable with mine well before my first session with it drew to a close.

This latest DM screen is well constructed and very attractive. However, its actual form factor and content will be a matter of preference for DMs. This is not my absolute favorite ever, but I generally prefer a landscape to portrait style screen and get more out of tables that provide interactive inspiration than loads of easy-to-memorize combat tables. I found this particular Dungeon Master's Screen to be a very solid offering.

About the Author
Steve Parker was born and raised in Edinburgh. Scotland, and now lives and works in Tokyo, Japan. As a video-game writer/designer, he has worked on titles for various platforms. In 2005, his short fiction started appearing in American SF/Fantasy/Horror Magazines. In 2006, his story 'The Falls of Marakross' was published in Black Library's Tales from the Dark Millennium anthology. His first novel, Rebel Winter, was published in 2007 and his last book, Rynn's World, was the first book in the Space Marine Battles series.

Disappointing

Based on the reviews, I was expecting a great story about a Deathwatch Kill Team.

Instead, I got a book about some Inquisitors I didn't like, didn't care about their mission, and didn't care if they survived. And bits about the Space Marines who will be part of this Kill Team. Most of them aren't interesting either, with a few exceptions.

Then, we got the Deathwatch Kill team in action at the end. Finally. So, the Deathwatch is supposed to be the silent killers. And they have a Dreadnought on their team? Buh?

Sigma is up to no good. Not a shock. And this books seems to only exist to get you to buy the inevitable sequel. Unfortunately, I just don't care. I'm amazed this was written by the author of Rynn's World.

Great Characters and Deathwatch Background

Too often Black Library authors depict Adeptus Astrtes as little more than unfeeling robots with little humanity or substantial personality (I'm talking to you Chris Wraight) with few exceptions (David Annadale's Black Dragons, Dan Abnett's Iron Snakes, Nick Kyme's Salamanders, etc...) Steve Parker has done a wonderful job in not only providing some interesting background into the Deatwatch but we get to see the very human thoughts and emotions from various Adeptus Astartes... This in turn provides a connetion with the reader that hopefully makes you actually care about the characters and if they survive or not...

I hope this a begining to an on-going series and I hope to see Talon squad again!

Deathwatch was a Read I could not put down...

The Author Steve Parker tells a tale that feels like a Special Forces story with a 40K background. It was nice to see space marines in a more human persona with actual fleshed out personalities. I kept saying to myself just one more page and found it hard to put the book down. I would like to see Steve Parker delve deeper into The Inquisition and Ordo Xenos and the Deathwatch. I want to know more of Scholar, Prophet, Omni, Ghost and Watcher and see them uncover the sinister plans of Sigma....

About the Author

Terry Ann Felke-Morris is a Professor Emerita of Computer Information Systems at William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. She holds a Doctor of Education degree, a Master of Science degree in information systems, and numerous certifications, including Adobe Certified Dreamweaver 8 Developer, WOW Certified Associate Webmaster, Microsoft Certified Professional, Master CIW Designer, and CIW Certified Instructor.

Dr. Felke-Morris has been honored with Harper College’s Glenn A. Reich Memorial Award for Instructional Technology in recognition of her work in designing the college’s Web Development program and courses. In 2006, she received the Blackboard Greenhouse Exemplary Online Course Award for use of Internet technology in the academic environment. Dr. Felke-Morris received two international awards in 2008: the Instructional Technology Council’s Outstanding e-Learning Faculty Award for Excellence and the MERLOT Award for Exemplary Online Learning Resources—MERLOT Business Classics.
